Celebrities Bela Padilla, Ella Cruz, and Donnalyn Bartolome will lead TikTok's 1 Million Audition in the Philippines!

TikTok, the world's fastest growing short-form video app, is bringing its global talent search, 1 Million Audition, to the Philippines from September 7 to September 21, to look for the best Filipino creators online.

Trendsetters Bela Padilla, Ella Cruz, and Donnalyn Bartolome will act as the ambassadors and lead the Fashion, Talent, and Comedy categories respectively.

The hashtags of each category will be as follows:

#1MPHTalent - Ella Cruz: https://instagram.com/p/BnWABYCnnZ0/
#1MPHComedy - Donnalyn Bartolome: https://www.instagram.com/p/BnTSXvWnNx1/
#1MPHFashion - Bela Padilla: https://www.instagram.com/p/BnaVBrhnC68/

Introduced in 2017, TikTok's 1 Million Audition provides budding artists a platform to showcase their diverse talents and win millions of followers and rewards at the same time. It has been successfully held across Japan, India, Latin America, Europe, and the United States with over one million participants.

For talented Pinoys, the 1 Million Audition can be their gateway to stardom. Through TikTok's 1 Million Audition, Indian creator Manjul Khattar has grown his followers to 700,000 in just three months while Korean influencer dancers has gathered 1.3 million followers on TikTok within two months.

The 1 Million Audition winners will receive prizes of up to Php20,000 each. They will also be invited to the Gala Party on September 29 in Manila where the Top 3 Most Popular Awards on Instagram @tiktok_philippines, Facebook @tiktokphilippinesofficial, and Twitter @TikTokPH will be announced as well.

What's more exciting is that the three final winners from each category will be invited to the TikTok Gala in Seoul, Korea in October to celebrate and meet other creators from the app's global community. The ambassadors, moreover, also shared some words of encouragement and excitement over the search.

"So excited to see Pinoy fashionistas show off their OOTDs on TikTok's 1 Million Audition. TikTok will definitely change the way they express themselves," Bela said.

"I love watching funny TikTok videos and I can't wait to see more from our talented kababayans. I hope they won't miss this chance to reach their dreams," Donnalyn added.

"There are always talented people on TikTok! I'm looking forward to discover these talented artists and to help them jumpstart their careers," Ella also said.

Whether it's singing, dancing, or playing an instrument, TikTok opens its doors to talented Filipinos to share their talents and to become the next fast-rising superstar.

Berlin Travel Blog: Snippets of this Cool City in Germany

People use the adjective COOL for Sweden, but I have no other better words to describe this city in Germany called Berlin.

Stickers are plastered all over their walls and street sign poles that my Ate had to ask our tour guide where she can buy some as souvenir (haha, they're free and used as advertisements by brands!!).

It is dirty, it is lively, and it has so much (his)story up their sleeves.

Berlin is the second stop of our Great Eastern Europe trip. I am liking the contrast of its vibe coming from Sweden, it's like meeting up the rebel friend after the clean-fun friend.

We exited Berlin's main station from the Sleeper Train, and we were a bit lost or maybe still sluggish from just waking up from the long journey.

I looked around while seating by a bus stop, as Ate tried to look for our way to the hostel. I saw cigarette butts all over the sidewalks, chewed gums, graffiti, posters, and stickers all sticking on walls and posts, but when you look at it as a big picture--Berlin is like a work of art.

Even Berlin's traffic light men (the Ampelmännchen) has a story to tell. It serves as a symbol of privilege for Eastern Germany which they retained even after the reunification. Btw, Germany also reminds me of Korea's current situation. When I saw Berlin Wall's new purpose of a photo wall tourist spot and not as a barrier, I feel a tinge of hope for Korea.

WHERE WE STAYED

Ate booked a dormitory type accommodation for our two nights in Germany. We arrived in Wombats City Hostel Berlin a bit early for check-in, but since we only had a few days in the city, our game plan was to leave our bags and immediately go.

So they gave us access to the luggage room where we overstayed just to sort the rumble in our bags caused by staying in a cramped sleeper train, and decided on what to wear, what to bring (chargers!), etc.

Again, we came from the sleeper train so pa-dead na all our gadgets. We also took advantage of the hostel's public showers so naka avail din kami non and ang aga pa so may naglilinis pa na kuya outside of our cubicles nakakaloka hahaha. Before we left, fresh na uli kami and ready for the day!

Here's how our Wombats City Hostel Berlin dormitory room looks like. Ang saya, even in a full room hindi ko nafeel yung space constraints na usual in dorms. We have one CR for this room, shared by five girls na naka check-in. Madalas late na gumising and umuwi yung dalawa because, well, Berlin = Nightlife. Usually kami ni Ate or our Spanish solo traveler roomie ang first ones in so parang solo room narin namin sya.

Ang kalat nila sa stuff pero wa care, it made me feel safe and at-home actually haha:

Our room's toilet and shower area:

Our side of the room, na near pa sa locker. I took the top bunk, and like in any hostels it has its own power outlet per bed.

Again and again, tip for hostel travelers: bring an extension cord. Super useful sya for me na ang daming chinacharge!

Every night while in Europe I bring home fruits! It's my guilty pleasure!

Upon checking in, they gave us drink vouchers that we can use on their rooftop bar. During our last night, we were able to avail it and got a beer and masarap sya!

German beer with a view of the Fernsehturm (TV Tower - symbol of communist power in East Berlin)

WHERE TO EAT

Random Cafes

Just across our hostel is an indie cafe owned by a French couple. Ang sarap sarap dito, and super pleasing sa mata ng interiors. I love the vibe!

Middle of the day when we needed to charge our batteries and our energies, we chanced upon another coffee shop near Charlie's Checkpoint. They have cool magazines on one side, and interiors straight out of Kinfolk. Kahit yung tama ng shadow akala ko I am inside Kinfolk mag!

Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap

Super worth it ang pag pila! They have a vegetarian option so yey, and super fresh ng vegetables, ang generous sa cheeese, and ang laki ng serving size!

Scnitzelei Mitte

Meat coated with crumbs, Schnitzel is one of the popular dishes in Berlin. I had my own vegetarian version which comes with potatoes and arugula salad on the side. Super solid but nag hahanap yung panlasa ko ng kanin perfect na sana sya hehe. (Ang laki ng serving size, hindi sya naubos ng Ate ko)

The Barn

A few blocks away from our hostel, The Barn is the perfect breakfast place to those looking for strong coffee. They also serve breads and pastries na sobrang pahealthy, I got a beet sandwich on brown bread here! Masarap naman, comparable to third wave coffeeshops in Manila!

Curry 36

There are lots of currywurst food chains in Berlin, but this one's near our stop so we tried it nadin for merienda. Ate said she can't leave Germany without having currywurst. I had their fries drenched with spicy tomato sauce. It's so crispy, and paired with their special sauce it's just so mouthwatering good!

Burgermeister

On our last night, we had dinner at the Burgermeister which is another Berlin favorite food place even by their locals. It is located in an old public toilet (!) right beneath the metro tracks so how much more "hipster" can you get!? Line was super long when we got there and it was not even dinner time. As always: they have a vegetarian burger option, plus you get a really really good burger so it's well-worth the wait!

THINGS TO DO

Berlin Wall

Before arriving to Berlin, I think this is my only bucket list for the city. Cancel all the food and the other sites, but I just have to see the actual historical wall that once divided Germany during the Cold War.

I didn't realize that the wall now is all over Berlin (and even a few landed its way in LA)--we spotted a lot of them in different locations during our 2-day stay which just tells how loooong this barrier actually is!

And another thing, I cannot believe that the wall was demolished in 1989!! I am alive na at that time and it still felt so recent.

Look how THIN the walls are:

The popular Berlin Wall art called "My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love". The West side of the Berlin Wall was covered in graffiti while the East side was not.

We spotted this on our last stop on our last night in Berlin (East Side Gallery), and felt that our trip to Germany was already complete. I made sure to touch the wall and document that once upon a time we made it there!

Take a Photoautomaten

I've read this somewhere, how much one can call herself an independent woman--but not in a photoautomaten. I can watch a movie or a concert alone (and immensely enjoy it), eat in restaurants with just "table for one please!", or even travel solo... But it wouldn't be as fun when you go alone in a photoautomaten.

Glad to have my Ate to take this vintage photos with for this trip! :)

Sunset in Reichstag Building

Once a meeting place of the German Parliament, damaged by historic fire, and resurrected when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989... The historical Reichstag Building is a symbol of a unified Germany.

Ate and I went here for a view of the city, which she booked in advance so we can go in with the tour group. Entrance is FREE, but you cannot go in without advance online booking. Also, you have to be there on time so you can go with your batch up the new glass dome.

While waiting, we took pictures from outside and saw this lolo brisk walking all over the park with his loud stereo blasting power-up workout songs! Hehe!

Here's the clear dome where we all went:

I am not sure if it's Ate's plan, but our batch's schedule is just in time for Berlin's breathtaking sunset (past 9pm).

Brandenburg Gate

A landmark in Berlin, one cannot visit the city without going to the Brandenburg Gate. We passed by this square so many times for our short trip, it's also a good meet-up place where we met our free walking tour group.

On top of the monument is the Quadriga with the statue of the goddess of victory on a chariot pulled by four horses.

This gate also used to divide East and West Germany, when the Berlin Wall shut off its access. President Ronald Reagan of the United States also had the Brandenburg Gate as his backdrop on that historical day in 1987 when he declared "Tear down this wall".

French kids running around the square when France won the World Cup! They had huge screens in front of the gate where people viewed the games during the season:

Also in this square is the famous Hotel Adlon, a standout, where the controversial Michael Jackson once dangled his baby!

Checkpoint Charlie

Did you know that the guy on the photo is not Charlie? 😅 Akala ko din noon una, haha! The name came from the phonetic alphabet (C for Charlie) as this checkpoint was the third of such border made at that time.

It is located at the intersection of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße, and once was the only place where foreigners visiting Berlin could cross from West to East and back again. Before, they even stamped passports for 5 Euros when you go through this checkpoint.

Berlin Cathedral

Berlin's most important Protestant church located in Museum island.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

A symbolic representation of tombs for all holocaust victims not given proper burial. The artist meant for the memorial to give visitors an uneasy feeling, encouraging a time to reflect and interpret it on your own.

Topography of Terror

A free indoor and outdoor exhibition located on what used to be a security office aka the center of Nazi's torture and execution during their regime. Also located outside is the longest stretch of the Berlin Wall.

"A man who indulges in indecent acts with another man ... will be punished by imprisonment."

Photos of homosexuals caught and tortured during the Nazi regime:

Siegessäule or the Victory Column

The Victory Column represents Germany's different victories during the 1800s. This once stood in front of the Reichstag (where we viewed the sunset) but was moved in a roundabout as part of Hitler's plan to remodel Berlin as the World Capital Germania.

 Join A Free Walking Tour!

Like in Sweden, we can only do so much to gain a little appreciation of Berlin's history and culture by joining one of their free walking tours. Ate booked us online with Sandemans. It lasted about 2.5 hours where we were able to walk through Hitler’s bunker, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Gendarmenmarkt, Book burning memorial, Humboldt University, just to name a few.

Again, information overload but a good way for me to get an intro to a new city.

Somewhere here, in one of the tiny rooms, Hitler committed suicide.

I know we still missed a lot of things, there is still so much to see and stories to understand, but then again we only had a few days to capture as much as we can.

We left Berlin as fast as we arrived from a Sleeper Train, but with a good lingering impression. Food was great, the whole city is a visual feast, and holding so many tragic encounters in its history made Berlin enduring and full of character. Cool city, in short!

Lessons from Kdrama My ID Is Gangnam Beauty

$

I just finished watching the final episode of the latest JTBC Kdrama My ID is Gangnam Beauty starring Im Soo-hyang (Kang Mi Rae) and Astro's Cha Eun-woo (Do Kyung Suk).

The drama's plot is about a girl who went through full face plastic surgery before entering college, after getting bullied for not fitting society's standards of beauty during her whole childhood. Will this change her life?

I am sure a lot were able to connect to these characters in one point of their lives. From growing up feeling they are not enough, from caring too much for what others will think, and seeing the things beyond what the eyes can see... Here are some of the lessons I picked up from one of -- if not -- the BEST kdrama of 2018!

(Spoiler Alert!! Do not go beyond this if you are not yet done with the series!!!)

1) Some people will look at you beyond the physical. Often times they will see you more for your passions, for your talents, and for your personality. You do you!

2) Do not harden even when the world has been cruel to you. Someday someone will appreciate and value you even if you're "too nice".

I think this struck me the most because it's only now that I'm older did I realize that I can be too apologetic for my actions. Being "too nice" can be seen in two ways--but sometimes I have to standup for my self too. Don't be too apologetic, but always remain kind. I think I am a bit of Kang Mi Rae in this way!

3) We are all the same. We misunderstand a person only to realize that they are also going through difficulties. Even the seemingly perfect girl may just be hiding her insecurities and self doubts.

4) Do not be too conscious, a lot of times people just don't care and have other worries to even take notice of your every move.

5) Sadly, it can be a damned if you do, damned if you don't world. Kang Mi Rae was judged when she did not fit society's standards of beauty, but she was also judged when she got a plastic surgery because she's being "fake".

So I guess the end point is we have no right to judge people based from their looks, and do not be too hard by judging yourself too. We are truly our own worst enemies and critics.

We are not here to grade ourselves based on how pretty or sexy we are (in the shallowest standards). I'd like to think that we get good grades in life based on what's truly in our hearts.

6) I guess it's true: time will heal all wounds. You can replace the bad memories with good--with the right person and at the right time. (SWEETEST SCENE EVER HUHU)

7) Adults commit mistakes too, just like Do Kyung Suk's imperfect parents! Also, lucky are those with families who will love and support you, always. Mi Rae's parents love her so much, even when she disappointed them at first. I always get teary eyed during her dad scenes, you know how much Mi Rae's father adores her.

8) Do not live based on what others will think of you. Follow your heart and what makes you happy, as long as you're not stepping on anyone.

9) No love is ever ordinary. Grabi ito, this speaks so hard for every second leads in all Kdramas!

10) Jealousy is toxic. Still, one of the best feelings in this world is to be sincerely happy for others. I think this is realest love in its purest form, when you are not getting anything from it but you still feel happy for others' state or achievements.

Ahhh... don't we all still have a lot to learn in life!

I am in love with this Kdrama that I feel that 16 episodes are not enough! Haha! But I am super satisfied with its ending, and seeing Kang Mi Rae's growth as a person. To me, her transformation goes beyond skin deep, and in a way I felt proud to see a strong, loving, and kind girl heal her wounds from the past and live a full and loved life. ❤

Thank you My ID Is Gangnam Beauty cast and crew! What a nice Kdrama that awakened the fan girl in me, haha! I will miss this series (and Kyung Suk's breathtaking face)! Haha! 😂💛 I hope we get to have more new heartwarming series before the year ends!

How To Overcome Writer's Block (Featuring Spike Dietary Supplement)

$

0

Thinking about it now, my main activity involves lots of brain churning.

I am a writer, and I have been writing for over a decade. I started with feature articles for different publications including Smart Parenting, Candymag, and Current (Meralco's company publication). My course in college is journalism. Now I write solely for my blog, and have since been used to writing with my own voice. So when it comes to writer's block, I think I've been through it so much that I want to talk about it in this post.

What is Writer's Block?

Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work, or experiences a creative slowdown. The condition ranges in difficulty from coming up with original ideas to being unable to produce a work for years. (Source)

What Are The Causes of Writer's Block?

Either feeling uninspired or not feeling well physically and mentally, a writer's block is mainly caused by the writer's mentality. Sometimes, stress and pressure can also block the creative flow. Getting easily distracted and lack of focus also lead to writer's block.

How Do I Fight Off Writer's Block?

Last week, I decided to stay at home to catch up on my Eurotrip backlogs.

I started off with a blank slate so I stared and stared in front of my laptop's screen feeling overwhelmed from the amount of work. I think this started my writer's block!

What to do to take control of my mind?

1) I list everything! What I need to do and all my random ideas. I keep a pen and paper beside my bed to write anything (free writing). I enumerate titles for possible blog entries. I write line after line of things that I might be able to use for new posts. It's better to start somewhere!

2) Speaking of starting somewhere, when I cannot write anything at all, I start with editing pictures for the blog post. This is also a big chunk of the whole entry, and since simple editing pictures is time consuming but lesser brain works for me, I finish it first than the write-up.

3) Organize the visuals first, and let them guide you to your writing. After editing the pictures, I upload them all on my blog and arrange them in the order that I want for the story. Whenever I see the flow of photos, the words usually follow.

4) Take food for the brain! If we take care of our body, it's also important to feed our brain. Some advisable brain foods that boost your memory include nuts, dark chocolate, and of course my favorite--black coffee!

Aside from these, I also recently discovered a natural supplement that is scientifically proven to enhance overall mental fitness and support cognitive performance in stressful situations.

Spike Dietary Supplement is the new product of Vida Nutriscience Inc, also the makers of Snow Crystal White TomatoSnow CapsMySlim Yerba Mate Drink, etc. Its main ingredient is a natural wild green oat variety grown in Europe called the Neuravena®, said to support cognitive functions as a nerve tonic, restorative and as a mild anti-depressant ever since the medieval times!

Ingredients of Spike Dietary Supplement:

Alpha Size - the most effective brain nutrients

Bioperine - improve nutrient absorption process

B-Vitamins (Vitamin B3, B6, B9 & B12) - crucial for proper brain functions.

How To Take Spike Dietary Supplement:

1. Take one (1) capsule daily after every meal.

2. Can be taken two (2) capsules on days that requires mental alertness and cognitive function activities such as exams, presentations, stressful activities that needs concentration & the like).

3. Take one (1) hour before the exams or presentations to experience a full effect timeline of 4 to 6 hours.

4. For adults use only. Not intended for pregnant or lactating mothers.

5. 2 Years Shelf Life.

Nowadays, I try to make sure that I bring Spike with me whenever I go out for events or meetings for a little push.

Thoughts on Spike Dietary Supplement:

Before writing this blog post, I made sure to try out this new and FDA approved (Philippine Food and Drug Administration) product so I can give personal and honest recommendations. I've been taking Spike Dietary Supplement for a week now, and so far so good! On the first day, I felt a bit sleepy after taking it (after lunch). A friend who also takes it said that this might be the effect of my mind relaxing so I won't get stressed out and pressured with the amount of work to do.

On the second day though, no more sleepy effects and my brain started to clear up and churn out words for my Sweden blog. I think it's also my fault that I've been sleeping late thus I get groggy during the day, haha! I have to change this bad lifestyle stat.

Taking B-Vitamins through Spike Dietary Supplement also helps me concentrate. There are no negative side effects, and I am glad I was able to accomplish around 3 madugong Eurotrip blog posts last week! Hope you can read them, too! ❤

Oh! And lastly before I forget, my final Writer's Block tip is to take time to rest. If you're feeling tired and uninspired, it's totally okay to take a break and stop doing what you're doing. Most of the time, I get inspired to write again after traveling. Aside from feeling and experiencing new things during a trip, being away from my laptop for a few days makes me miss writing so bad. And so when I get back home and start to blog again, stories suddenly flow naturally. 😊

My favorite quote from Kiki's Delivery Service that I always associate to writing:

Spike Dietary Supplement is available in Mercury Drug for Php 990 / box of 30 capsules.

My Favorite Klook Travel Bookings + Are You Ready For A Different Kind Of Travel Fair!?

I guess it's true. Gone are the days when you have to book a full-on tour guide service when traveling. Anyway, I have never been a fan of following certain time frames, visiting places because of a set schedule (even ones I am not interested in), and go around with groups of other tourists.

These days, travellers enjoy planning everything on their own. I actually learned to love pre-travel activities like booking, researching, and creating itineraries. I can be flexible with my travel plans, but I also have to make sure that I am ready for a trip para sulit since it's not cheap to travel!

Aside from booking for my plane tickets and accommodations, there are also other things that I book prior a trip to save time and even money. These include my travel internet (sim card or pocket wifi), airport transfers, within city transportations, and entrance to activities like classes, theme parks, etc. This is where Klook came in handy.

I've started using Klook only late last year. It's so easy to use because their app is free and user-friendly, they cover a lot of countries, and you have different payment options. My first booking with Klook is my Tokyo Disneysea passes with Deegee. I've listed here my other top favorite Klook activities that you also might want to try on your next trips!

1) Formosan Aboriginal Village + Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan

2) Tokyo Disneysea

3) Running Man Thematic Experience in Seoul
4) Sanrio Puroland in Tokyo

PRAGUE: Inside A Dark Fairytale Book

We left Berlin from where we entered it. We took a 4-hour train going to the country of Czech in their city called Prague (aka Praha). Inside the train, Ate and I were in front of a couple seemingly nursing a hangover, their legs inconsiderably stretched up to our space. They also placed all their humongous backpacker bags on the floor in front of us instead of putting them on top along with the other passengers' bags so we have more space. I plugged my earphones and endured the ride.

We arrived in Prague at about past lunch time, and compared to our first two destinations, looking for our accommodation is a bit swifter thank God. I pulled my carryon through cobblestone streets, quaint medieval houses as backdrop. It was an overcast day (my kind of weather although it looks bad on photographs) that I was in such a good mood in no time!

Last night, after finishing my Kdramas (My ID is Gangnam Beauty and Best Hit), I decided to check out a travel Korean Variety Show for a change. I watched On The Border via my Viu app where the cast went to Europe with Cha Eun Woo. Hopefully not to misquote them, they mentioned these lines about Europe that struck me the most:

Maybe the beautiful place inspired so many of their people to become artists and create beautiful things.
Or maybe, the artists lived here and made this place beautiful. It's a virtuous cycle.

I think they just put into words my first thoughts about Prague. Quite honestly, everything that I imagined about Europe I've seen in this city!

Where We Stayed?

Ate booked us in Prague EIA Centre Apartments via Airbnb, about 7 minutes away from the main train station. Much to my delight, we have our private room and shower. There's a common hallway, a toilet, a toilet-bath-laundry room, and a mini kitchen which we shared with the two other rooms. I think we paid less than Php 6000 each for our 3 nights stay here and it's well-worth the money.

Here's how our beautiful room looks like. As the owner said, it's an old house made of stone so we don't need aircon even in the summer. Our room was cool, especially during night time.

Huge bed that Ate and I comfortably shared:

We have a TV and a shower room na clear ang pinto nakakaloka (haha)

On this side is a huge cabinet that we weren't able to use, a small fridge, a full length mirror, and a chair where I usually eat my breakfast and also my fruits of the day every night:

The home owner also provided us with two bottled water and a soda and juice inside our mini ref. We were also told that the water from the sink is potable, so yey for free water for our whole stay! Hehe.

Ang cool din ng key to our apartment, old style:

Just outside our room is the mini kitchen where we can microwave, use the plates and utensils, use the coffee machine, get free treats, etc.

Here's the bigger common toilet-shower-laundry room. Ate maximized this by doing the washing machine almost the whole time we stayed here, haha!

Just outside our mint green building is already a visual feast. I am not sure what this detailed and colorful structure is but it seems to be a Jewish church.

Where To Go?

Our longest stay for this Eurotrip was here in Prague, but I think we were able to go to most of the tourist spots in just 1.5 days!! Haha! Most of the stuff were walkable, that on our first day we were able to go to a lot of them by foot.

Wenceslas Square

Wenceslas Square is one of New Town Prague's main city squares named after Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia. So sorry for this cliche but this World Heritage Site just took my breath away!!

Rising high on both sides are buildings of almost same height, all looking grandeur and detailed in well-coordinated color patterns. When I look at their signages more closely, they are either restaurants, modern boutiques like Sephora and Marks and Spencer, and other local and international shops and hotels.

The brand Bata came from Czech Republic:

Looks like the Grand Budapest Hotel noh!

Old Town Square

I realized how important squares are in European countries. It is the heart of a traditional town where the community gathers.

The Old Town Square in Prague showed us a "picture of a thousand words" when we visited it on our first night. It was a riot!

You'll see mascots, musicians, magicians, and all sorts of entertainers in the middle. Important architectures served as borders of the square, including the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn, the Prague Orloj medieval astronomical clock, The Baroque St. Nicholas Church, the Old Town Hall, and the Czech National Gallery. They also have a market, food stalls, cafes, etc. I can stay here for one afternoon just to go through its details.

Havelský Market:

The beautiful Old Town Square during sunset:

Charles Bridge

A historic wide and long bridge across the Vltava river of Prague, built under King Charles IV's reign, the Charles Bridge connects the Prague Castle and the city's Old Town.

The bridge is decorated with 30 baroque-style statues, but I learned that they are now just replicas (maraming nawawala na parts at night!) while the original are now on display in a museum. By next year, 2019, the bridge is slate for repair which will take 20 years to finish! Narealize ko now na buti nalang we went to Prague na before this happens. Even the astronomical clock in Old Town Square is under repair while we were there.

Like a town square, Charles Bridges is full of life because of their entertainers and vendors. My favorite moment was right after the sun has set, it was dark and a bit windy as Ate and I walked across the bridge, a musician at a distance was playing a sentimental tune with his violin.

If you have the chance, you can also climb the Old Town Bridge Tower (with fee) for a spectacular panoramic view:

John Lennon Wall

I cannot think of a direct connection between the Beatles' John Lennon and Prague, but in this city you will find the Lennon Wall. From a blank wall, they transformed it with John Lennon inspired art, quotes, and lines from The Beatles songs. During the communist regime of Gustáv Husák in 1988, students expressed their grief through writings and art on this wall calling the movement Lennonism.

Ang pinaka nakaka bilib sa lahat was even when authorities painted over the graffiti, the next day it will again be filled with poems and colors. It has now become a symbol of love and peace, and when we visited, my hippie heart felt at ease.

While we were there, a lone musician was playing Beatles songs in the middle, while selling his CD most prob of Beatles covers.

His placard says: "I need money to repair my time machine to go back to the 60s".

St. Vitus Cathedral

Ate and I can actually stay in Prague without buying train cards, expect in that morning when we decided to visit the faraway St. Vitus Cathedral. Located within the Prague Castle Complex, I was so overwhelmed to see this Gothic Roman Catholic church, it's the first time I saw something like it.

Inside of the cathedral are the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors.

Gargoyles and gothic style architecture:

Signs of modernity: electric candles inside the cathedral:

Tall stained glass windows:

Church of Our Lady Victorious and The Infant Jesus of Prague

Although not as popular as St. Vitus, the Church of Our Lady Victorious is our favorite church in Prague. Ate and I visited it twice and it's not even in the Old Town Square area or near our apartment!

They have prayer cards at the back and on the sides that come in different languages from Korean to English to Spanish, etc. They also have a nativity exhibit on a corner in front of the church, and a souvenir shop outside selling nice religious medallions and pendants.

Dancing House

We took a quick visit just to see this peculiar building from the outside that they call the Dancing House. It is a standout design next to Prague's Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings! They also named it Fred and Ginger, after famous dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Food Trip!

Some of the yummy stuff we had from this country are the Trdelnik or "chimney cake" in any store in Old Town, Bohemia Bagel, large and chewy candies from Captain Candy, classic Czech dishes in Kolkovna Celnice, obložené chlebíčky or garnished breads at Sisters Bistro, and Prague beer!

Join A Free Walking Tour (Sandemans)

Surprisingly, we still had a lot to learn and see in Prague during our 3-hour free walking tour with Sandemans Tours. Some new sites include: the House of the Black Madonna and Museum of Cubism, Rudolfinum - Czech Philharmonic, Old New Synagogue and the Golem, Old Jewish Quarter, etc. We also had a beer break in between!

If we had more time and budget, I also would have wanted to join another tour with them, the paid ones which include a Bohemian tour or a medieval tour. Sobrang interesting!

Charles Bridge At Night

Out of all the photos in my Eastern Europe camera roll, this night in Prague tops everything else.

I think this was during our second day, Ate said we should watch the sunset by the Charles Bridge. Sa Old Town Square palang we saw that Prague's sky is already on fire! Violet, pink, yellow and red hues painted the backdrop of this historic town. I am not sure but that was the only night when this occurred.

As we were walking towards Charles Bridge, ang dami daaaming tao! I guess it's a thing din doon to watch the sunset in this location. The crowd did not bother me though, we were all lucky to have find our own spots to watch a spectacle that doesn't cost us a thing.

Am I in Disneyland? This looks even better than a fireworks display in a theme park:

By the time the colors finally subsided, Ate and I continued on with our walk in this tiring but dream-like world.

Sabi ko nga, grabe yung pagod ko even with just few hours out in the crazy streets of Prague. Not even because of all our walkathons, but because you have to be cautious here all the time. We had incidents when our change wasn't given in full. Naka front pack ako here or may lock yung backpack ko which was a hassle every time I need to get something from my bag. Some people, even restaurant owners, can come off rude. And there's just too much tourists...

....But the view! Grabe, with just the view everything else is compensated! They're throwing to me one beautiful site after another, not even giving me the chance to think of my rants! Haha! 😂

1000 Pesos Makeup Challenge!

$
0
0

Last weekend, I decided to book for a staycation in QC area because of my tight schedule. We celebrated a friend's last few weeks as a single lady last Saturday night at around Ortigas, and early morning of Sunday I have a shampoo bar making class with my sister in Tomas Morato and a fashion event in Trinoma. All my life I live in the south, but the past weeks my commuting experience was the worst! I think spending a few bucks for a comfortable weekend was worth it!

Anyway, I decided to post my Php 1000 makeup challenge since I did packed my lightest and most affordable makeup for a weekend away from home. I've been on the lookout for affordable makeup after getting requests whenever I post anything beauty related on my blog or Instagram... so here it is!

Alternative title for this Php 1000 makeup challenge blog post: What's Inside My Travel Makeup Pouch; and Student-Friendly Budget Makeup!

PRIMER: QuickFX No Shine Mattifier - Php 99 / 10g sachet

Silicone texture, covers pores and mattifies the face. This is comparable to Benefit's primer, but minus the heavy price tag! It's in a sachet but with nifty cap feature that keeps it neat and easy to bring.

If you liked this product, you can also avail it in 30g tube for Php 279.

BASE: iWhite Korea BB Holic Everyday BB Cream - Php 24.50 / 4mL

This has been my go-to BB Cream for years now as it gives my skin a nice glow! The product has sheer coverage, and comes in two shades (light and beige). A sachet is good for about 4-6 uses. The packaging is not travel friendly, and can be messy if you'll bring it as is so I guess it's best to have a resealable bag so you can store it neatly.

If you liked this product, it also comes in 30mL tube for Php 184.

SETTING POWDER: Bench Daily Spell Magic Powder - Php 21.50 / 50g

After seeing this so many times on Youtube rave videos, I finally got my hands on this powder that's always sold out!

The Bench Daily Spell Magic Powder contains Vitamin E and UV Sunscreen, and a bottle contains so many products that I still haven't finished it after months of use. Really worth the price!

What I do is place the powder on a twist-cap container so I can carry it with me on travels and just leave the big bottle at home. I use a retractable brush to apply powder on my t-zone. It works as a setting powder and also to avoid oiling up mid-day.

EYES - CHEEKS - LIPS: Sun-Kissed Organic Clash Blush - Php 200 / 30g

Another "the internet made me buy this" product! The Clay Blush had its moment when Youtubers raved about this all-in-one pigmented makeup that you can use on your eyes, cheeks, and lips. This also gives you the best drunk blush and sun-burnt effect skin. Although the clay blush has its own authenticity issues, I just made sure to buy mine through a reliable seller (RMK) on Shopee.

BROWS: Careline Best Brown Liner - Php 150 in Watsons / Php 165 in BeautyMNL

Retractable brow liner with spoolie brush on the other end. Although not my favorite eyebrow product, this does the job of filling in my brows + compact enough to bring during travels. It comes in two shades (taupe and brunette).

LASHES: Careline Go Long Mascara - Php 175 in Watsons / Php 185 in BeautyMNL

Packaging is so cute, and product does the job of lengthening my lashes. But sadly, I had racoon eyes at the end of the day haha! I think the product smudges and transfers easily.

SHIMMER: Careline Pocket Palette Eyeshadow - Php 100 online

Flat packaging so it's easy to bring in your purse, most of the colors are shimmery so I use them as highlighter for my eyes lids, corner of my eyes, or even my cheeks (use the lighter white or gold shade). Best to bring different brushes to achieve a perfect finish.

IN SUMMARY:

PRIMER: QuickFX No Shine Mattifier - Php 99 / 10g sachet
BASE: iWhite Korea BB Holic Everyday BB Cream - Php 24.50 / 4mL
SETTING POWDER: Bench Daily Spell Magic Powder - Php 21.50 / 50g
EYES - CHEEKS - LIPS: Sun-Kissed Organic Clash Blush - Php 200 / 30g
BROWS: Careline Best Brown Liner - Php 150 in Watsons
LASHES: Careline Go Long Mascara - Php 175 in Watsons
SHIMMER: Careline Pocket Palette Eyeshadow - Php 100 online

TOTAL = PHP 770!

VERDICT:

They say that it's better to invest more on your skincare than on your makeup, and I agree! I spend more on my nightly creams and serums, but I am more experimental when it comes to makeup brands just as long as I don't use fakes.

I love that there are so many affordable options in the market now (compared to when I was younger). You just have to go to makeup counters to try them and ask for recommendations. It's also my habit to watch at least 2 Youtube reviews before buying, just so to check if the product is recommended.

We also have a lot of good locally produced makeup that you can try, and they are usually more pocket friendly and definitely way better than fakes. Plus, these local brands make sure that their product will fit their Filipino market. You'll find shades that will fit our skin tone, and finish that will withstand Philippines' humid weather.

Do you also have a list of your favorite affordable makeup brands? I'd love to try them next time, so please do comment them on the box below! ❤

Most of these products are available online @ BeautyMNL, Lazada, or Shopee app, or in Watsons stores nationwide.

While You Were Sleeping KDrama Shooting Locations!

Sobrang minsan lang ako mapalakpak sa isang Kdrama, and I did this so many times while watching While You Were Sleeping. 👏 The plot is sooo good, yung pag bagsak palang ng dramatic background music sobrang perfect timing, plus backed with great actors--I can't help but put this drama on my top Kdrama favorites!

For this post, I am sharing to you my While You Were Sleeping shooting locations, but as a Kdrama tour itinerary. I think you can accomplish this in a day or two. I still have a lot on my Korea bucket list, and might follow this when I have the chance to go back again in Seoul soon!

Where to go, where to eat, and what to do???

Let's follow Jung Jae-chan (Lee Jong Suk) and Nam Hong-joo (Suzy Bae)'s journey!

SIGHTSEEING

We Are Young Wall Art / Mural

This mural is located in Anguk-dong neighborhood near Gyeongbokgung Palace. My family passed by the wall while looking for my hanbok rental.

How To Go: Anguk Station, Exit 1. Then copy-paste and follow this on your Google Maps: 37.578356, 126.982243

Wonhyo Bridge

Where Woo-Tak (Jung Hae In) and his fellow policeman arrested a phone dealer, but got the victim instead! This is also the location of so many Kdramas like Legend of the Blue Sea and Cinderella and Four Knights. I passed by the bridge while looking for the entrance to my cruise in the Han River, you'll know you're on the right place with its distinct colorful tiles design.

Woo-tak, the second lead na sobrang affected ako! Haha!

How To Go: Yeouinaru Station, Exit 3. The park is located in Yeouido Hangang Park (37.523805, 126.939802).

Konkuk University

This is where Hong-Joo ran to save a proposal gone wrong (she saw in her dreams) because of fire. Jae-Chan also went here to save Hong Joon from an angry mob. Will visit this as it is also the school in my new favorite series My ID Is Gangnam Beauty!!

How To Go: Konkuk University Station, Exit 3

Bus Station

I would have wanted to visit this bus stop, but learned that it is more than an hour away from Seoul and is just a makeshift bus stop created for the drama. So feel ko hindi sya practical puntahan.

But what I can do though is well, semi-copy Suzy's style here and maybe may tatabi din sakin na mala LJS! Haha!

SBC Broadcasting

SBS Broadcasting Center in real life, this is the building where Hong-Joon stood for a while to think if she should start working again as a journalist.

How To Go: Omokgyo Station, Exit 2. Walk to: 37.529043, 126.874166.

WHERE TO EAT

Moon’s Wine and Brunch

The pretty resto where Hong Joo and Jae Chan met in episode 8.

How To Go: Jukjeon Station, Exit 2. A bit of a walk from the train station ( 37.321841, 127.110004), but you can also ride a taxi and show this address: 1186-7 Bojeong-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea 경기 용인시 기흥구 죽전로15번길 15-3 (보정동 1186-7).

Mapo Sogeum Gu-i

Aka Hong Joo Samgyeopsal or Hong-joo’s mothers’ restaurant!

How To Go: Mapo-gu Office Station, Exit 5. Copy-paste and follow on your maps: 37.560533, 126.905776, or take a cab to this address: 143 Weoldeukeop-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea 서울 마포구 월드컵로 143 (망원동 477-9).

WHERE TO SHOP

Miniso

Miniso branches are all over Seoul, but if you want to go to the featured branch in the series, it is in Gangnam Station.

Saw these in Miniso in Myeongdong:

How To Go: Gangnam Station, Exit 9 or 10. Follow this on your maps: 37.498842, 127.026136.

Do not forget to add It's You on your playlist and put on your earphones while walking around Seoul to spot these locations!

LEE JONG SUK IN MANILA!

If you're not going to Korea anytime soon, I still have good news for you! For sure you know this by now but if not: Lee Jong Suk is coming to Manila for a fan meet this November 18 in Araneta Coliseum!!! Wala munang bbyahe!!! Hahaha!

I will be having tickets giveaway for this fan meet SOON (still waiting for go signal) so make sure to follow me on my social media accounts to get updates! :)

In A Nutshell: Slides From My KTO and KLOOK Korean Drama Locations Talks!

$

0

I had two consecutive guest speaker stints in less than a month, and as an introvert, I still can't believe that I was able to pull off both public speaking engagements well! I mean, I am not greedy, I am already satisfied after committing just a few minor buckles and no dead airs so yey! 😂

The crowd during the Korea Tourism Organization Travel Seminar, venue is Mind Museum BGC:

The crowd during Klook Travel Fest, venue is SM Aura SMX:

Same same outfits for the two talks, mwahaha! (Hindi ko sadya) 😅😅😅

Anyway, I decided to share here on my blog some snippets from my two talks. Although both are similar when it comes to the topic (I am now a master in Korea travel, majoring in Kdrama Locations hahaha), there are still little differences like the span of time allotted for the talks (KTO was shorter), and my conscious inclusion of the packages and activities for the Klook talk (of course, I have to incorporate the client's offerings in my slides diba!).

If you're interested in this topic, then read on! :)

INTRODUCTION

I started both my talks with a little introduction and self promotion, haha! And like in almost all my past talks, I love holding a mini social media game so that my audience will post my pictures or videos and I have something to repost after everything, hehehe.

Aura! Hahaha!

I introduce myself as a lifestyle blogger boxed as a Korea blogger. Even during my Euro trip, followers will send direct messages either asking when I am going back to Korea (hahaha) or that the location I just posted is also featured in a Korean Drama or variety show! Sa totoo lang, naaamaze ako sa Team Korea!! 😁 Ang tatalas ng mga mata! Hehehe!

I will also explain how and why I started going to Korean drama locations, which is the essence of this talk hehe. I am a 4-seasons fan, so I enjoy going back to Korea every change of weather. I know that Japan and some other countries also have autumn, spring, and winter... But Korea to me is the most affordable, easy to navigate, and must I say even female solo-traveler friendly!

So it was Spring of 2017 when I decided to go back to Seoul to see cherry blossoms again, and enjoy the cool weather. Since I only have cherry blossom park visits in my itinerary, I decided to maximize the short trip by adding stuff I haven't done on my first 2 visits in Korea. I thought na why not go to the settings of the Korean dramas that I just watched diba?

HOW TO LOCATE THESE KOREAN DRAMA LOCATIONS?

And so the day before my flight, I printed out these specific scenes using my Instax camera. The next day at the airport, waiting for my flight, I Googled and wrote down the addresses, nearest train stations, and arranged my Korean Drama itinerary at the back of my plane ticket.

Essentials to locate your favorite Kdrama's shooting sites:

1) Google! Do your research.

2) When plotting your destinations, make sure to arrange them by train station and train line to save time and effort of going back and forth.

3) Essential apps: Google Maps for navigating your walks, Seoul Metro App for navigating your train rides, and Klook (of course!) so you can book your internet, entrance fees, etc. online and in advance

4) Follow websites dedicated to Korean Drama location hunting! www.koreadramaland.com is a site where contributors share filming locations, while @subongpark is an Instagram account by a Korean couple that even reenacts the scene of the Kdrama!

Of course, you always have me http://www.anagonzales.com/search/label/korea! Hehehe! 😁

Usually, cafes and restos have posters in front to show that this or that show was filmed in their store!

A LIST OF MY FAVORITE KDRAMA LOCATIONS

The meat of my talk! I share about 20++ of my favorite Korean Drama shooting locations, and how to find them. By this time, I ask the audience to take out their camera phones and snap my slides for future reference!

Sharing a few of them here:

Goblin's House

Heo Joon Jae's House

Bok Chicken

The Han River Cruise and Namsan Tower Obvservatory can be booked in advance and with discounted fares via Klook:

Some recent dramas included in my slides:

Abandoned House in What's Wrong With Secretary Kim

Park in I Am Not A Robot

Alleys in Something In The Rain

And of course, Korean Dramas that are set outside of Seoul!

Crown Prince's Pond in Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

My Love From Another Star

Winter Sonata

Aera and Dong Man's House in Fight For My Way

E-World in Daegu

How to conveniently go to Busan or Daegu from Seoul? Check out the Korea Rail Pass (KR Pass) available via Klook:

IT'S SO KDRAMA!

These are activities or sites in Korea that are not a specific kdrama location, but will remind you of a scene or two from your favorite show!

Going around Seoul, billboards in subway stations and shopping streets like Myeongdong and Hongdae all feature Korean drama actors as their endorsers! Minsan magugulat ka nalang na uy! Napanood ko na sya somewhere!

My favorite "very Kdrama" meals in Korea: Spicy Cheese Ramyeun in a convenience store, soju in a Pojangmacha or soju tent, and coffee breaks in Dal.Komm!

My favorite indoor activity in Korea when I just want to relax my tired feet: Watch a no-subtitle Korean movie in CGV or Lotte Mall, and relax in a jjimjilbang (Korean public bath house)!

I also visited a few TV stations and experience halls in Seoul:

WILL I STILL GO BACK TO KOREA?

And lastly, I have a new bucket list if I will be given another chance to visit Korea! So yes, I will still go back!!

1) Wear a Korean school uniform and pretend to be Kang Mirae hehehe!

2) I really really want to experience a Korean templestay:

3) I have been to Korea 8x already, and haven't even tried their noraebang (karaoke)! Maybe because most of the time I travel solo.

4) Another My ID is Gangnam Beauty inspired activity: Indoor Baseball!

5) I also want to watch a Kpop concert in Seoul:

6) And of course, why not diba hahaha! Professional wedding photography in Korea when the time comes! Haha!

I always end my talk by of course flashing my social media accounts again, hahaha! And by saying stuff like do whatever makes your heart flutter, and I hope we can continue our fan girling online. :)

More snaps from both KTO and KLOOK events:

With my fellow guest speakers and representative of KTO Manila:

Thank you KTO for this opportunity to share my stories to Korea travellers:

My support group after the KTO Talk: Monica and Chelsi my Bloggers United babies, and my super supportive friend Ava! Thank you so much for being there! It means millions to me!

We just have to avail the Harry Potter photo zone:

Music right after my Klook talk:

Availing the hanbok and photo zone at the KTO booth during Klook Travel Fest:

###

I am so grateful that I have been given a stage in this stage of my life (HAHA) where I can go in front of hundreds of people just to talk about the things that I love. Kahit ako hindi makapaniwala till now, haha! I still do get nervous especially during the few minutes before going up the stage, but after hearing a person or two in the audience say Annyeong! the moment my first slide flashes on screen, nawawala na ang kaba.

As I professed last Sunday at the Klook Travel Fest, "At home ako dito!"Hehe.

I am not sure when all these Korean obsession will last, but I am happy and anxiety-free right now because of them. Their music, because of the heart-felt Kdrama stories I get to watch, and of course the aegyo-yeppo faces of my K-idols that I look forward to every night hehehe. I really miss my Korea travels now that I had to look back on old travel pictures for my slides... So I guess it's about time to plan another trip? 🍁🌸

7 Alternative Things To Do On Your Next Trip to Malaysia!

Malaysia is one of those countries that you can easily go back to every year. I love going here as it is close to home. Aside from being rich in culture, food is also good (lots of vegetarian options!), and you can travel to Malaysia even on a budget. Their transportation system is also easy to learn, plus they have some Korean stuff we still don't have here in the Philippines (an Innisfree store, some Korean magazines in their bookstores, etc hehehe--priorities!). I can go back to this country for these + to see more of its other cities like George Town, Malacca City, and Kota Kinabalu.

I didn't realize that I've been going to Malaysia at least once a year for the past three years. If you're running out of ideas on where to go and what to do, I listed in this blog post the itinerary for our short trip for Tourism Malaysia and Cebu Pacific. You might pick up a thing or two! Happy reading. :)

1) BATU CAVES

I know and I am sure you've been to Batu Caves on your first or second visit in Malaysia, as it is part of every Kuala Lumpur things-to-do lists. But now is the time to go back as this famous limestone cave temple just received a very Instagram-worthy rainbow makeover!

I am still amazed as to how they made everything so colorful and so fast, and it's far from tacky in real life. It's almost still the same, but not quite!

2) MALAYSIAN HANDICRAFTS

PEWTER

We went to two showrooms of Malaysian handicrafts while we were in Kuala Lumpur, and gained a newfound appreciation for Malaysian arts and culture. First is Malaysian pewter brand Royal Selangor's headquarters in Setapak, where you will find the world's largest pewter tankard, samples of different pewter products, and watch an actual demo on how they made these intricate (and expensive!) pewter crafts from silverware to jewelries.

BATIK

We also learned about Malaysian Batik, a textile art in Malaysia. Popular motifs include leaves and flowers meticulously hand painted on fabric using very vibrant colors. They turn these fabrics to useable items, usually into clothes or bags.

3) KL TOWER

Tourists usually go to the Petronas Towers for the view of the city, but heading for the KL Tower instead will give you the city view with the twin towers! We went here just in time for sunset, and had coffee while enjoying the nice (air conditioned, haha) view of KL. You can purchase your discounted KL Tower Observation Deck tickets online HERE.

4) WOW KL! CULTURAL SHOW + DINNER BUFFET

If you want to watch traditional Malaysian dance and other performances, then going to Wow KL! is hitting two birds with one stone. Food (buffet style) is also good and offers a lot of varieties from traditional Malaysian food to vegetarian options down to their desserts.

5) DAY TRIP TO IPOH

Only about 2-3 hours away from Kuala Lumpur (via tour bus / guided tour), Ipoh is the capital city of Perak Malaysia that offers so much for their visitors. I love their food culture and artsy streets.

Book for your Ipoh Private Day Tour from Kuala Lumpur HERE. It is more convenient and time saving, you get to explore more even with time constraints. It's my second time in this city, and it never gets old! Most prob, Ipoh is one of my favorite cities in the world.

What to do during your short, day-trip to Ipoh?

Enjoy a nice lunch of their famous dishes in Onn Kee Restaurant (extra thicc bean sprouts, rice noodle soup, egg tarts). We even met the owner when we dined there!

Shop around - try their famous egg tarts and giant pomelo, buy packs of Malaysia's famous Old Town Coffee as pasalubong (they originated in Ipoh!).

Enjoy an afternoon in MAPS (Movie Animation Park Studios) Perak Theme Park! They have a Smurfs theater, extreme rides, and other shows. You can book for your discounted MAPS theme park tickets in advance online via Klook. (for Php 647 from Php 1681!)

Ipoh Railway Station and Municipal Building for architecture appreciation.

And my favorite in Ipoh, the Concubine Lane for some shopping + dainty cafes + photo op with their wall arts. Of course, do not leave Ipoh without having their White Coffee!

6) MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS

Something for the family or barkada to enjoy, the Museum of Illusions offers hyperrealistic 38 hand-painted art pieces and an Augmented Reality show.

The Museum of Illusions is located in Kuala Lumpur. You can purchase your ticket in advance via Klook for only Php 440.

7) SUNWAY LAGOON

One of my favorite places that we went to for this trip! Sunway Lagoon is a city of its own! They have a huge 6 themed zones, malls, 3 hotels, and even a hospital and university!

For the theme park, you have these options: Sunway Lagoon Water Park, Amusement Park, Wildlife Park, Extreme Park, Scream Park, and Asia's 1st Nickelodeon Themed Land: Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon. Definitely a day is not enough to go to all these! You can purchase for your discounted ticket in advance HERE.

Dinner in Hotpot Kitchen inside Sunway's mall:

Sunway has 3 hotels, with several room types! Here is a sneak peek of the pool in their luxurious private villa:

Another meal in their mall + saw Sunway Pyramid Ice (skating rink)

BONUS: Perfect for Halloween!

Just for the spook season, Sunway Lagoon opens their Nights of Fright 6, Malaysia's biggest and scariest theme park with 11 thrill rides, 8 haunted houses, 4 scare zones, and lots of other shows and activities. We went to about 4 or 5 themed haunted houses on our first night, and sobrang riot! Ang galing ng production nila, very realistic huhu. 👻👻👻

They are open from Sept 28 to October 31 only, so if you're in the city on those dates this is the perfect Halloween activity in my books!

We had half a day to enjoy Sunway Lagoon's theme park, and I went for the thrill rides aka Scream Park and Amusement Park!

Warm up muna! First activity was archery with Pepe and Marcus:

Pirate's Revenge! This ride rotates to 360 degrees! 😨😱 Medyo naloka ako, level up Anchor's Away siya haha! I think I died a little after this! 😂

Got wet din even after avoiding the water park when we rode the Grand Canyon River Rapids! 💦

Other must-ride but I have no photos of: Lost City of Gold Scream Coaster!

We were able to check a portion of Sunway Lagoon's Water Park! They have a Surf Beach, Scuba Diving City, and Vuvuzela--just to name a few of their attractions. Next time, I will make sure to stay longer in Sunway to enjoy all these!

 WHERE TO STAY IN MALAYSIA?

Dorsett Kuala Lumpur

Just 50 minutes away from the airport, Dorsett Kuala Lumpur is located right in the heart of the Bukit Bintang Golden Triangle area and at the start of the Bintang Walk. It is also walking distance to Pavilion KL, Star Hill, Lot 10, Sungei Wang, BB Plaza, Berjaya Times Square and Low Yat Plaza, and tourist destinations Petronas Twin Tower (KLCC) and KL Tower. Rooms are huge, beds are very comfortable, and amenities include a gym, swimming pool, and function rooms.

Right next to Dorsett Hotel is the Dorsett Residences, featuring a rooftop pool area with a lovely view of the twin towers.

Address:
172, Jalan Imbi,, Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 55100

Sunway Pyramid Hotel

After our Sunway theme park experience, I am now eyeing on a trip to KL just to stay in this area and enjoy their amenities! Sunway Pyramid Hotel offered a well-designed and fuss-free room during our stay, but what I will commend here is their extensive buffet breakfast options! You can also enjoy the water park and amusement park fully when you stay just right next to it. 😉

Address:
Persiaran Lagoon, Bandar Sunway, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 47500

The Hostel Life: Budget Accommodations in Korea

$
0
0

I am sure almost all autumn trips are already set, but to those still booking last minute tickets or those planning to spend winter (or even early Spring!) in Korea, I decided to collect some of the hostels and guesthouses I've stayed in during my group and solo trips.

One of the things that I love about Korea is how you can go here even when you're on a budget. There are several options for accommodation namely luxury hotels, 3-4 star hotels, temple stays (on my bucket list!), jjimjilbang (or Korean bathhouse), Airbnbs, and even traditional hanoks.

Whenever I travel solo, I prefer the dormitory type which they either call a hostel or guest house. By this, you share one room with several travellers. Often times, you get an assigned locker to safe-keep your luggage or important things whenever you go out, or at night when you sleep. There are times when my bag is too big for the locker so I just bring my own lock and put my luggage in one corner of the room, near my bed. Safe naman so far, and honestly I think Korea is one of the safest places I've been to.

My luggage is usually too big for the locker, so I just lock it and place it in a corner near my bed:

Hostels also have different room types. First, there are mix dormitories where both men and women can stay, but there are also women only or men only rooms. There are rooms for 4, 6, 8, even up to 16 guests. Ang pinaka marami kong nakasama in one room is in Namsan Guesthouse in Myeongdong with about 21 beds! But hindi ko naman nafeel na we were packed, as each bed is covered with a thick sliding curtain to maintain privacy.

Restroom also varies per property. I've stayed in hostels with separate toilet area and shower area located on one floor (usually gender-segregated, but there are some that's also mixed). There are also restrooms that are exclusive per room, meaning only you and your roomies can use it. I am a bit of an OC, so I make sure to bring my own quick-dry towel and rubber slippers that I can use for the shower (although hostels also usually provide you these). I also make sure that my toiletries kit has a mini hook so I can hang it wherever.

New Sun Guesthouse in Hoehyeon (near Myeondong) provides these room slippers for their guests:

With this minimal space, you also have to strategize how you can smoothly get your things out of your locker or your luggage, especially at night when people are already resting and sleeping and the slightest sound of zipping you bag or opening a plastic may wake up someone (huhu).

A tip is to use those cloth packing cubes to segregate your things. I place these cubes directly inside my locker, and just leave my empty luggage in a corner of the room. What I do is I pre-style na my clothes and arrange them in the packing cubes, so I just grab them in one go, no need to think of what to wear during the trip. I also have a separate, color coded packing cube for my socks, for my underwear and bra, toiletries, makeup, skincare, and for my accessories (caps/ hats). Before sleeping, I make sure to take out the clothes (including socks and accessories) that I will wear the next day, and place them on top of the packing cubes para the next day when I get up, mauuna na ako sa restroom. Packing cubes for makeup and skincare usually I place them na in a corner of my bed since I use them daily. I also sleep next to my personal bag with my valuables, just to be sure.

Not Korea, but here's how I maximized my space in a sleeper train accommodation - I usually just sleep next to my things just to be safe.

It's more convenient to have a toiletries bag with hook so I can easily get and keep my stuff:

The octopus life, akk! I bring extension cords during my travel since I use and charge a lot of gadgets.

Anyway, with that long intro I hope you find the hostel life as an option if you're also traveling to Korea on a budget. Ang swerte if you can afford a hotel room!! Sa totoo lang there are days when I wish I have a private room and shower area to myself, but with my minimal budget, I guess an average of just Php 1000 per night is already sulit for now. Tiis tiis muna, "tutulugan lang naman yan", haha! Now sharing the hostel rooms and some snippets from some old blog entries on my experiences in them:

SEOUL

New Sun Guesthouse
Stayed 3x, Spring 2016 with friend, Autumn 2016 solo travel, and Summer 2017 with family.

I booked our guest house via Airbnb. With my Ate's help, we located an affordable and decent place that is near the subway and the shopping/food area. Lots of guest houses popped, but Ate warned me about streets na sobrang matarik. According to our taxi driver, Korea is 70% mountainous!

I ended up getting a room at the New Sun Guesthouse Myeongdong for only Php 1600+ per room per night inclusive of WiFi and basic breakfast in the common kitchen. I also refill my water bottle here daily, so no need to purchase every time (tipid din!).

A downside in staying in New Sun is that there are no elevators, so you have to carry your luggage up these steep stairs (they go up to 3rd or 4th floor).

Here's how our room looks like, perfect if you are traveling in twos:

With private hot/cold shower room:

Lots of towels that you can regularly change:

Sachets of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash (bring your own nadin, medyo konti).

Room is airconditioned, and you also get a box of tissue, comb, cotton buds, hair dryer, water heater, sockets (with adaptors), and a small ref with 2 free bottles of water:

Here's our bunk bed with 1 pillow and comforter each. I stayed on the top bunk, and always had comfortable sleep. They also have other room options with two bunk beds, twin beds, etc.

It's a box-type room, and sometimes we need to open the small window to let air in. But over-all, it is a clean place, we were able to find ways to fit our opened luggages in the small space. It's a safe and decent room to sleep at night. It also very near convenience stores,

Dustin Guesthouse Hongdae
Stayed during Autumn 2016.

I stayed in a Single Room in Dustin Guesthouse Hongdae for about Php 1600+ per night, and it is literally just a BOX! No windows, just a small bed, room is air conditioned, there's also a rod with few hangers to hang my coats on the side. My opened maleta wouldn't even fit the room, so I had to place the dirty ol bag on top of my bed just to pack or get my clothes!

I booked this room because it is cheap and conveniently located near the subway (Hongik University Station), and at the center of Korea's street music scene at night. Just go out and you're already surrounded by Korean restaurants and beauty stores!

The downside is that the place is on the third or fourth floor of the building, so I had difficulty bringing CARRYING my maleta without elevators. They also use passcodes and not keys on their doors, which I find scary since others can hear my code I was afraid someone might break in the room easily. I wonder if they change it for every new guest? And of course, the thought of living in a box might be uncomfortable to some, it did tickled my claustrophobia, but just a little! As long as I have the privacy, I am okay.

I also don't have my own restroom, so I share the single shower room and separate toilet room with the other guests, located in the far corner of the hallway in my floor. It's not the cleanest during my stay. I wasn't able to explore the property thoroughly if there are other shower rooms, and didn't avail the free breakfast as I only stayed there for a night (Hongdae is near the airport too).

If anything, I will recommend Dustin Guesthouse Hongdae just for its location--I was able to watch the young street performers till late and not worry about heading home since I just live in the next building!

You can check the other room types and rates of Dustin Guesthouse Hongdae HERE.

Namsan Guesthouse
Stayed during Spring 2018.

Namsan Guest House is one of the highest ranked accommodations in Agoda when arranged with cheapest price first, haha! I took it since I've heard about this hostel before, and after experiencing the most crowded, the smallest, and even the dirtiest guesthouses before, what can go wrong??? Price for a bunk bed in a Female Only Dormitory is only about Php 800+ / night!

The area is very near the Namsan Tower, thus the hostel's name. I did not realized that the walk, although it looks short on Google Maps, requires a looong climb up a steep road! Kamusta naman sa pag hila ng maleta, huhu!

When I saw a Namsan Guest House sign, it's just Namsan 1 palang pala and they have I think 3 or 4 branches heading up! Haha! Mabuti nalang Namsan Guest House 2 lang ata ako, I was there after the next block. (sorry will never figure out the Namsan Guest House numbers, when I booked sa Agoda it just stated Namsan Guest House. :p)

Entering the building, there are tiny cabinets where you have leave your shoes. They are labeled by capsule number so check which one is assigned to you:

This is at the common area at the basement level, where they also have the receiving area for check-in, and the pantry area for the inclusive breakfast and coffee.

While I was checking in, I saw guests wearing hanbok (Korean traditional costume) taking pictures by the provided photo wall. This is free for guests to use.

Simple breakfast, I saw breads and instant ramyeun and a coffee maker. I just availed the coffee.

Here's how my room looks like. There are 21 cubicles in the Female Dormitory, and a separate toilet and shower room on the same floor. They gave me the upper bunk, which felt uncomfortable at first since I have to climb and go down every time I need to go to the loo. But I got used to it eventually.

I also got the horizontal upper locker, which was difficult since I have to carry my luggage to and from it whenever I get my things. But I eventually created a system by putting all my packing cubes straight inside the locker, so when I needed anything-- I just take out the individual packing cubes instead of my whole luggage. Paraparaan lang talaga haha!

With almost all my guesthouses for this trip, noise and cleanliness were my major issues. But bilang cowgirl naresolve ko naman sila. With noise, edi okay pede din ako mag ingay ang dami ko pa namang supot haha joke lang! I was too tired to get bothered, I easily passed out every night. As for the cleanliness, buti nalang I bring my own quick-dry towel and my own rubber slippers which I use instead the free ones they have in the toilet. I also use the rubber slippers around the room and wala naman naninita basta hindi sapatos, hehehe.

Philstay Myeongdong Boutique-Women Only
Stayed during Spring 2018.

When I got back from Daegu, I decided to stay in another guest house in Myeongdong just so I can compare. Philstay Myeongdong Boutique-Women Only is one of the most convenient hostels I've stayed in Seoul, walking distance from the train station (Myeongdong Station) and the Myeongdong shopping center. It is the perfect place to stay for my last night in Korea, where I did lots of last minute shopping at night!

Door to the guest house is right next to a samgyeupsal restaurant, which is very lively at night.

I stayed in a 4 Person Dormitory at about Php 900+ per bed per night. This is the smallest common room I've ever stayed in (although wala talagang tatalo kay Dustin Guesthouse, but at least that one's private).

All our luggages and shopping bags were scattered in the middle of the room, blocking the way. They have lockers per person, but it is horizontal and small located at the bottom part of the bunk bed--usually left unused. Even with the space constraints, I appreciate that the cubicles are big enough and also has a blinds for privacy. I used to think all dorms have curtains per bed, but during my Euro trip I found out that this is only the case in Asian countries like Korea.

Property and room has no key or keycard, but passcodes you need to punch every time you enter. Make sure to keep this paper, or take a photo of it so you won't forget! WiFi is also provided.

This is my upper bunk bed. There's a small table where I place some nightly essentials such as my lip balm, water, and skincare stuff. Outlets for every hostels I stayed in are provided per bed. For Philstay, they even lend you a basket for your toiletries which I appreciate!

Since opening my luggage is not possible inside our tiny room, I always occupy the small space in our floor's landing where they have tiny seats and even a weighing scale--so I guess this is really the purpose of this area?

Doors to our room are labeled by letter. There are times that they all look the same, and can be confusing to me, haha! Right in front of the rooms are vanity desks with mirrors and hair dryer (not to be used at night).

Meanwhile, there's a solo tiny toilet cubicle located a few steps down the staircase.

While shower stalls are located same floor as the receptionist area (not so near my room). It's a bit of a hassle, but I was able to get by with just a night of stay. Saw these propery pictures online via Agoda.

Receptionist area, they are very accommodating during my stay. Was able to take the right bus to the airport after asking them tips and directions.

Common area near the receptionist desk, where you can eat or use your laptop. The hallway next to it leads to the shower rooms.

Here's how the shower room looks like. Nakaka loka na medyo clear yung glass cubicles so I just make sure may malaking towel ako to at least cover the front, and then stay sa side near the toilet. Ang sabitan niya is outside, a brown cabinet located near the door. But I still hang my clothes in the cubicle coz dyahe hehehe.

Again, no lifts so be ready to take the stairs all the time:

JEJU

Jeju R Guesthouse (formerly Jeju R Hotel)
Stayed in Autumn 2016.

I only paid Php 1,148 (with taxes!) for my TWO nights in Jeju R Guesthouse. What a deal! I spent 5300 Won (or just Php 225) for the 15-minute taxi ride from Gimpo Airport to the guesthouse. My cab driver navigated his way through his mobile GPS.

I booked for Jeju R Hotel located in Seogwipo (one hour away from the airport), but because I was clueless about Jeju's cities, my cab dropped me off at the nearer Jeju R Hotel's Seogwang-ro branch! I think they now remained the other property to avoid confusions.

Good thing the guesthouse receptionist can speak in English and asked me if I prefer to stay in this branch, it's okay. He asked me to add a minimal fee since prices are different between the two hostels.

I was surprised when I went to my room and instead of dormitory beds, I was given THIS! My solo room and a private bathroom! I was settling down when I immediately received a call that there was a misunderstanding, HAHA! Sabi na too good to be true! Long story short, my name was mixed up with the one who reserved for this room, so I returned the keys (huhu) and went to my correct room.

The dormitory room is located at the 5-1/2 Floor, which sounds very Harry Potter ish, hehe!

Instead of a key, I only had to memorize the door's passcode to enter. There are ten beds in my room, but luckily, they made me stay in an all-female dorm. No one's checked in yet when I entered. Partly I imagined that I'll be alone that night with these many beds, wahaha.

My personal space, which is right next to the closets and the restroom.

There are two bathrooms in our room, plus another one for the whole floor. So for the whole stay, I never felt na nakikipag agawan ako ng CR. Everything's also clean and complete (tissue, towels, water, shampoo and body wash are all provided). I also have a lamp and two electrical outlets next to my bed, and several scattered outlets all-over the room.

On my first night in the dormitory, and all beds were already occupied. I wasn't able to make friends during the whole stay, except for the Korean girl on my top bunk who offered a hairdryer when she saw me heading out in the cold with wet hair (haha!). She was also the first one who greeted me with a bow when I entered the room. I still have a lot to learn about dormitory living, but my solo first time experience is surprisingly not as bad as I thought.

You can check the other room types and rates of Jeju R Guesthouse HERE.

Slow City Hostel
Stayed in Winter 2018.

On my second time in Jeju, I decided to stay in Slow Citi Hostel in Seogwipo, nearer major tourist attractions. I've learned my lessons during my first trip in Jeju where I stayed near the airport, which is more than an hour away from the must-visit sites!

Slow Citi Hostel is one of the most highly ranked Jeju hostels in Agoda with a good price. I think I only paid Php 2000+ for my FOUR nights stay there. I was supposed to be in a four-bed women's dormitory room, but was given a solo room with a bunk bed and my own restroom. I waited for a roommate on the succeeding days by always fixing my stuff before leaving the room, but never ako nagkaroon. I just realized now that maybe it's because I was the only solo female traveller at that time kaya wala silang maitabi sakin haha.

Ahhh.. The warmth of staying in a hostel! I should have placed a Philippine flag there before I left hehe:

We always take off our shoes before entering the building:

On the night of my arrival, it was snowing heavily that there were major traffic and delays on the road. I thought everyone's already sleeping when I got in. I still went in to at least leave my heavy bag and sleep on the kitchen or something. Then an old man came out from the counter, and asked (in Korean) if my name is Ana Gonzales, huhuhu. I apologized for being so late and tried to explain the bus fiasco and the snowstorm, and although he only partly understood English, he even looked more apologetic that I had to go through all that, and again--HUHUHU.

We then argued about paying for my rent since I thought I already paid for it prior the trip by inputing my credit card in Agoda, but later on I found out na he was right pala na it was not yet charged. He just said that why don't we settle everything in the morning, get some rest first and call it a night.

Ahjussi (or mister in Korean) took my heavy luggage to the third floor to my room, and I thanked him endlessly since I am used to carrying naman my own things whenever I stay in a guesthouse but he still took the initiative. Hotel treatment for the price of a dormitory stay, I highly recommend this place na. I later on learned that the old man owns this hostel, grabe talaga when I think of it.

That's my bed, with a small flat pillow and a comforter. It is comfortable enough for me, and I slept well every night.

I also like that they have lots of electrical outlets to charge my gadgets, and rods to hang my clothes:

There's also a vanity desk with a wall mirror, two small towels, and a hair dryer:

The restroom is so spacious and the best part is it's all mine! It is complete with big bottles of body wash, shampoo, conditioner, a toothpaste, a bar of soap, a roll of tissue, and of course a hot shower which I maximized every morning and night during my whole stay there:

I love my room. Even though it's nothing fancy, it felt nice, safe, and warm. On that first night in Jeju, I took my sweet time with my hot bath, making sure I use all of the free Korean bath toiletries, and even spoiled myself with a face sheet mask after. What a day! I took the lower bunk of the bed, and didn't even have to think too much like I always do every night. And what felt like the first time in years, I was immediately transported to a dreamless, satisfying sleep ~~~

BUSAN

MoonDong's Hostel
Stayed during Winter 2018.

I managed to find a guesthouse that I easily fell in love with. First SUPER CHEAP. Second, it's BY THE BEACH. The name of the place is MoonDong's Hostel and it is located just across Busan's Haeundae Beach.

I arrived a bit early for the 4pm check-in. Unlike hotels in Manila that has early check-in, they don't even have a receptionist when I arrived at around 11am. I wandered freely at the receiving area, and fell in love with their common room.

MoonDong's Hostel is located on the 6th floor of the Hotel Sky Beach. I got a bit lost looking for any signage of MoonDong's Hostel from the outside, but didn't see a single one! Just look for this building instead, the entrance is right next to a Tom N Tom's coffee shop and the BMW building.

The whole time I was there, only the service elevator was working for the 6th floor:

Hallway to the few dorm-type rooms of the hostel. The kitchen, a powder room, and separate male and female restrooms are located at the end of the hall:

Again, it was empty when I got there so I took the chance to take photos while contemplating on my next move.

Sobrang artsy dito, but best part is the view of the beach!

Sharing the photos of my room aka Bed in 6-Bed Female Dormitory. A night here costs only Php 575

I sent this selfie to my mom on my first night, haha! That's my bed, it has its mini table for my essentials (lip balm, water bottle), right next to the power outlet for charging my gadgets.

Ganyan ako mag halughog ng things ko in this guesthouse, it is pretty spacious so I can just open my bag to look for clothes and other stuff. I also left it like that whenever I just go to the restroom because it is pretty much safe here even when I have 3 or 4 roomies. But whenever I go out, I just close and lock it, then roll it in the pinaka corner near my bed.

Here's how a shower cubicle looks like in MoonDong's -- very neat, separate ang shower and the dry area where I can hang my stuff and change into my clothes. They also provide huge bottles of shampoo and body wash so no need to bring them. I also take pleasure in trying these Korean bath products, hehe!

Separate door for the whole cubicle, plus another glass door to the shower. I am also wearing here the pair of slippers they lent to me:

I slept well every night, even when the room is 3/4s filled walang invasion of privacy with these thick curtains. Sometimes, I love the hostel life! Also, you can see the tiny hook at the far end of my bed where there's a hanger for my coat and where I also hang my ear muffs.

Distance to the subway is fair enough, nice stroll where you will see lines of restos and shops. Easier without your luggage, of course. Bus stop for airport limo is also walking distance, around 15 minute walk that you can easily navigate with your Google Maps (just search for "Airport Limousine Bus Stop").

There are nearby convenience stores, and food is never a problem. They also provide hair dryer and even hair straightener (a whole powder room for the ladies), towels, clean sheets, doors conveniently use pass codes and not keycards, and on my last night they even have movie viewing and gaming in the common room. Will go back here if ever I find myself again in Busan.

Amazed by this solo powder room just for the ladies to fix their hair and put on their makeup! One time I stayed here just to semi watch the other Korean girls do their makeup + skincare as I put my own!

You can check the other room types and rates of MoonDong's Hostel, Busan HERE.

DAEGU

Go Hostel
Stayed during Spring 2018.

The walk to my guest house from the train station (Jungangno Subway) is very convenient! I did not get lost, I just typed in the name of the hostel on my Google Maps and then followed it. I booked the CHEAPEST guest house that I found in Agoda, which is Go Hostel. Their price is only about Php 500+ per night in their Bunk Bed in Female Dormitory Room. I think this is the cheapest accommodation I ever stayed in in Korea!

The reception is on the 2nd floor, so prepare to go up the stairs with your luggage to check-in. Leave your shoes and pick a slipper. I chose the rubber type which I was able to use nadin pati sa pag shower.

Put your shoes on any of these cabinets:

The lady at the reception helped me with my bag after paying and getting my room assignment, since it's still one floor up at the third level. Here's how the common area on the third floor looks like. People hang out here to eat, talk, or do their own business. I go here to refill my water bottle for free, hehe.

For the small price, I was given a decent bed, a locker with my personal code, and a spacious room where I can freely open my bag to fix my things without disturbing the person next to me.

There's a separate toilet and a single shower area just for those inside our room. Ang weird that the shower room has I think 2-3 showers in a tiny space (ano yun sabay sabay kami haha) so I just lock the door, bahala na sorry. There's also a sign that says that we can also use the toilets / showers at the second floor, but di ko na inavail yun.

Shower room photo from Agoda:

There's also a powder area with 2 sinks with a hair dryer right in front of the shower / toilet rooms. I wasn't able to take photos of these na, but they are pwede na. Was able to get by with them, and they even provide towels, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. For Php 575 wala na akong reklamo! Everything's super okay for the price. :)

Photos of the female dorm. Malaki ang spacing here compared to my dorm experiences in Seoul. Hindi ka makakadistorbo sa kaluskos, and may couch pa nga sa gitna where some of my roomies hangout and eat strawberries!

The toilet and shower room are both on the far end of our room. I made sure to choose the bed na malayo dito so I won't get disturbed ng mga dumadaan lalo na pag sleeping time na (good decision!).

I picked the lower bunk na open ang curtain, malaki space nya sa harap so minsan I just leave my open maleta there haha! But of course I fix my stuff whenever I go out.

We all get a locker. My maleta doesn't fit so I just put it next to my bed, and ok lang because as mentioned earlier spacious ang room. Inside the locker, it fits my backpack where I placed all my shinopping and dirty clothes.

The lady by the reception who also seems to own the place toured me around the guest house, and taught me the basic stuff like how to operate the hot-cold drinking water, where to get extra towels, how to use the lockers, lock the doors, etc. She's super friendly, and told me that if I ever see myself back in Daegu she will personally tour me around and even give me free accommodation! I later on found out that she used to own a Kbeauty store in the Philippines, but she had to leave. She always greets me with Mabuhay! and Kamusta! I super love this place because of the people!

The Royal Caribbean Experience: Ovation of the Seas! | Ship Tour + Cruising FAQs

As usual, I want to write about my cruise experience while it's still fresh. New trip is coming in a week, and I want to have this blog post up before that for everyone to learn more about the cruise life. I noticed the sudden up in interest with this kind of luxury chill type of exploring, getting direct message inquiries on my social media postings. Even my own family is already dreaming of a cruise for my mom's 60th birthday next year, my sister prefers the same ship I've tried HAHA (Ovation of the Seas)! It's that GOOD!

Anyway, in this post I will try to include: A ship tour (get ready for a photo loaded post), some stuff I experienced and learned while on a ship for 7 days, rates, and a lot of your FAQs answered by Ms. Alexa of Royal Caribbean.

So if you're also piqued with interest on the cruise life, read more below and see why this is an experience you should try at least once in your life (but I doubt you won't want to go back again after the first try!)! 🚢❤

ALL ABOARD!

OUR ROUTE:

Hong Kong >> Full Day Cruise >>; Danang, Vietnam >> Nha Trang, Vietnam >> Ho Chi Minh Vietnam >> Full Day Cruise >> Singapore

We flew from Manila to Hong Kong (port of departure) early morning via PAL (airfare is separate from cruise fare). Then we took a private bus to the port. There are several procedures required to enter the ship, much like in airports when checking in for your flight. Our luggages were tagged, passports were checked, bags were scanned, and before we knew it we're already inside the ship looking for our assigned rooms.

They will also give each guest the most essential item you have to always keep and bring around with you during your whole stay inside the ship: An ID card with your name on it aka the SeaPass. You tap the card to enter or open the electricity of your room just like in hotels, or when you play in the arcade, order in the Bionic Bar, and you will also use the SeaPass every time you leave and reenter the ship during port stops. Never ever lose this or leave your SeaPass, it serves as your main identification since they will also collect and keep all passports during the whole duration of the cruise.

This is the immigration where we surrendered our passports:

Some stuff that happened during embarkation: You have the option to carry your own luggages with you to your room, or leave it by the entrance for the staff to carry for you--but it will take hours till you get your things again. We preferred the first option even though it was hard to pull my two luggages on our fully-carpeted hallway! Haha.

My extension cord, which I always bring during travels, was confiscated during the scanning procedure. They gave me a paper to claim it back when we're in Singapore and completely leaving the ship already, but I forgot about it and left it na huhu. So don't bring one na!

We were also given an envelope with several papers containing our Guest Ticket Booklet and Daily Planner.

Some things to know aside from not bringing an extension cord: Alcohol is not allowed except for a maximum of TWO bottles of wine or champagne brought only during embarkation day. Bring them via carry-on bag with no box. Gratuities per day are already automatically paid for by each guest through their SeaPass account. Also, EVERYONE is required to attend a Muster Drill before the ship sails to learn more about the ship's safety procedures. The drill will also be shown on your room's TV so you can review it.

And finally.....

SHIP TOUR: Welcome to Ovation of the Seas!

Let me take you on a virtual tour of our home for 7 days.

Ovation of the Seas has 16 Decks (deck = floor), each floor conveniently has this map by the elevator so you won't get lost. Take note, 7 days and hindi ko padin namemorize kung saan yung ibang restaurants or shops! Haha!

Beautiful clear glass elevators will take you to the different decks:

They change the flooring of the elevators EVERYDAY! I guess you lose sense of time when you're on a ship, haha!

DECK 2

Boarding Area
Medical Center

No photos allowed during the whole protocol, much like when you enter immigration for your flight. Deck 2 is where we enter and exit the ship.

DECK 3

Music Hall
Staterooms
Casino Royale
Chic
The Grande

Again, no photos of the casino area. I think my favorite parts of Deck 3 are the restaurants! Windjammer Marketplace in Deck 14 is the main buffet area in the ship, it is so huge and it offers a lot of selection! But it also tends to get crowded, and seats fill up easily, so our group prefers to go to Chic (buffet breakfast) and The Grande (ala carte dinner).

I think we had 2-3 breakfasts and one lunch in Chic. Chic has a modest-sized buffet table with your favorite breakfasts including cereals and grains, cheese, eggs station, breads and pastries, fruits, hashbrown, assorted meats, etc. Coffee, tea, and water will be served to you on your table c/o Chic's very attentive waiters.

The Grande, to me, is the fanciest dining area inside Ovation of the Seas. The interiors made me want to dress up in a ballgown and hold a glass of red wine while listening to violin music, haha! Table is by reservation, while food is served ala carte, you will get a menu upon seating and choose an appetizer, main course, and dessert. They will also serve you water, but drinks like juice or soda are also available with separate fee.

Both Chic and The Grande are already part of your cruise fare, so avail it if you can!

We eat early dinner several times in The Grande, so the view of the sea next to our table is nice and instantly sets the vibe of luxury cruise life. They also always have at least one vegetarian option in their menu, which I really appreciate.

We take time eating our meals here, enjoying the slow pace and each other's company. And every night, palaging may ganap from the chefs and the crew. There's a night when the chef belted out a song, and on our last night there were dancing and even audience participation! We always have the grandest time in The Grande!

DECK 4

Music Hall
Royal Theater
Royal Esplanade
Boleros
Cafe Promenade
La Patisserie
Guest Services
Michael's Genuine Pub
Shops
Sorrento's

Another favorite deck in the ship is Deck 4, just because this is where we have our nightly cookie and pizza fix! Right next to each other is a deli and cafe called the Cafe Promenade, La Patisserie and Sorrento's, where they serve pastries, cookies, coffee, tea, water, pizza, etcetera 24/7.

Our group's habit throughout our cruise life is to go here every night for their chocolate chip cookies, the brown variant is just tooo addicting! We even brought some home haha! What we do is we grab a plate and bring them to our room with either a glass of milk, water, or even decaf coffee!

Feel free to get whatever you want! Everything's on the house / already part of your fare! And the staff here are sooo friendly and even funny! One time we asked for three cookies, and they'll jokingly fill our plate with five! Haha! No diets here, and I think our enthusiasm shows! 😜

Always a good night whenever I have a cookie and decaf coffee, which I bring and enjoy in our room!

Nightly conversations and bonding with my fellow bloggers / 'grammers were held in Cafe Promenade.

Sorrento's serve these goooey cheesy slices of pizza which I regret I only tried during our last night!

Also in Deck 4 are shops and other restaurants with door charges like Boleros and Michael's Genuine Pub. In the middle is a "bazaar" where they showcase designer stuff on SALE! One night they had a designer perfume sale for as low as Php 1500, skincare sale featuring Kiehls and Origins, then another night they had a bags and wallets sale featuring Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Coach, etc! All prices are in US Dollars.

We love going around this area! Btw, they also have an ATM in this deck that dispenses money in USD for the last-minute tempted shoppers! Hehehe.

DECK 5

Royal Theater
Royal Esplanade
Bionic Bar
Chops Grille
Focus Photo Gallery
Izumi
NextCruise
Schooner Bar
Shore Excursions and Dining Reservations
Wonderland

Some of the restaurants, bars and lounges with door charges (excluded in the cruise fare) are located in Deck 5, including Izumi (Japanese, Schooner Bar, and Chops Grille). They are beautiful, though, and worth dining in!

One of my favorite meals during the cruise is a lunch in Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver! They also have a door charge, but you can order anything na from the menu! Jamie's, as expected, offers delicious Italian selections from cheese platters, pasta, pizza, and desserts. Eating here is must!

We also had one dinner in Wonderland, a treat not just to the tastebuds but to all our five senses. Every detail and every food served here are in-theme and well-thought-out. Wonderland takes its name from Alice in Wonderland, and it might be because entering this whimsical restaurant leads you down the rabbit hole of endless delicious gastronomic choices! Haha! 🌙✨

They also prepared separate vegetarian dishes for me, a very thoughtful and very considerate move is that the servers made sure to ask all the guests for their food restrictions before serving the meals. A++ in my books!

Very creative! We had to "paint" on a frame in front of us to see the menu:

Food served were inspired by elements of Wind, Ice, Fire, Water, Earth and Dreams— each with a selection of small or shareable fantasies. We also had drinks in goblets. It was hard not to take out my camera every time they bring out a new dish!

For night cap, we tried the super hightech Bionic Bar where two robotic bartenders create your drink for you!! They have several cocktail combinations, but you can also customize your order. Place your mix through the tablets located in front of the bar, and watch the bionic mixologist concoct your drink!

We weren't able to explore this part of Deck 5, but also on this floor you can check out and book for your next cruise:

Dine in Cafe @ Two70:

Two70 is the ship's venue with an expansive 270° floor-to-ceiling view of the ocean! You can grab a hand-crafted cocktail while enjoying the view of the ocean, or watch the live entertainment. Two70 also transforms into a nightclub every night!

From Two70, head up for The Library and The Workshop:

There are roving cameras around the ship, where in-house photographers take your pictures with mascots, photo walls, etc. You can view them and have them printed at the Focus Photo Gallery.

All of our meet-up point before a tour is at the Royal Theatre. They also hold several performances here every night. We watched one show called PIXELS (free, but by reservations), where they combined music and technology to showcase a fun and one of a kind production! You will never get bored when on this ship!!

Photo with the cast of PIXELS! I think 2 or 3 of them are Filipinos!

DECK 6-10
Staterooms

DECK 11
Adventure Ocean
Staterooms

DECK 12
Adventure Ocean
Staterooms

DECK 13
Staterooms
Conference Center

Majority of Decks 6 to 13 are dedicated for all the rooms of the guests. Ours is located on Deck 12. I wasn't able to explore the Adventure Ocean although it's on the same floor as ours.

Here's how hallways in staterooms look like. It gets confusing to me sometimes as everything looks the same, haha! I also got lost while looking for Kerwin and Jelito's room and realized the size of our ship!

Aside from elevators, they also have several staircases in the ship, and they are all well-designed too! I love looking at framed artworks displayed on every floor.

Cleanliness! For the OC, I love that every floor, corner, and entrances of our ship has this hand sanitizer machine.

But anyway, let me take you inside our Balcony Room:

I shared the Balcony Room with Asta of The Poor Traveler. The fully-carpeted room has a queen sized bed that's convertible to two solo beds. There's also a comfortable couch by the balcony, where Asta loves to sleep!! Beds are comfortable, and you can modify the room temperature so we always have nice cool sleep every night. Aircon automatically shuts down the moment you open the balcony door.

They have a charging outlet right next to the beds, but they also have two USB types and other sockets located at the table below the vanity mirror.

Stay updated online, and keep in touch with loved ones with the great internet connection they have on the ship. VOOM WiFi is FAST even when we were sailing in the middle of the ocean!! You have to pay for a code though, but it's an option for the social media kids like me who uses their Instagram stories and Facebook all the time, or even to those who still needs to work a little while on vacation. Again, internet is fast and very impressive!

Room's size is comparable to Japanese Airbnbs I've stayed in before, especially the shower and toilet area. It is small, but every space is maximized, clean, and complete. I have to commend our stateroom attendant, who kept our room and restroom very clean every single day during our stay. Aside from doing his job well, he always greets us by the hallway every single time we go out of our room for meals or our daily schedule!

I also enjoy heading out to our balcony every morning when I wake up. I either have a view of our next destination, or just endless water and the horizon. Sobrang ganda! I super recommend staying in a room with balcony, it's a refreshing experience having the view of the sea the moment you wake up and before you retire at night.

One time after a long day of just cruising through endless seas, I was amazed to wake up and finally see land from our balcony! Hello Vietnam!

I remember on our first night and the first time our ship sailed from the port of Hong Kong, I returned to our room as the waves were a bit strong, and saw Asta chilling by our balcony. I went out with her and just watched the bright city lights of Hong Kong go from blinding to tiny specks, as our boat goes farther and further away to the pitch black ocean.

DECK 14
Solarium
Solarium Bistro
Pool Deck
Splashaway Bay
Noodle Shop
Pool Bars
The Living Room
Windjammer Marketplace
Coastal Kitchen

One of the constant places we go to while on the ship is the Windjammer Marketplace, Royal Caribbean's main dining area for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They serve an assortment of global cuisines, buffet style! You know how buffets often compromise taste by giving you variety of selections (quantity over quality), but for Windjammer, everything's GOOD even with all the varieties and serving sizes they offer every single day!

I love that EVERYONE has to pass through these sinks first to wash their hands before they enter the buffet. You will be greeted by one of the service crews with a happy smile! It's easy to feel at home in this ship.

They also serve the cookies here! And the pastry chef is Pinay! Most of the crew of Ovation of the Seas are Filipinos, sharing their world-class service to all the guests! Nakaka proud a.

I love all the fresh fruits I get to eat here everyday.

Drinks stations are also found in every corner of Windjammer. They serve unlimited water, coffee, tea, and juices. Again, you can bring them up to your room if you want more!

Also located on the same deck is the Solarium Bistro, where we had our breakfast once.

The indoor pool is also located inside the Solarium, where only adults can avail the pool and the hot tubs. It also has a Pool Bar and several lounge chairs where guests hang out with their drinks, to rest, or to read a book. This is my favorite area for swimming!! You can even rent towels for free by just presenting your tap card.

Free ice cream! Located in between the Solarium and the outdoor pool decks.

Just outside the Solarium is the pool deck, Royal Caribbean's large outdoor pool area! They have the H2O Zone aqua park for the kids, hot tubs, a pool, and a 220 square foot movie screen that runs movies or live sporting events. Movie nights are held in this area, so imagine swimming while watching a Marvel movie before ending the day!

DECK 15
North Star
North Star Bar
Running Track
SeaPlex
SeaPlex Doghouse
Challenger's Arcade
Fuel
Sports Deck
Flow Rider
RipCord
Rock Climbing Wall
Vitality Spa and Salon

Again, you will not run out of things to do while inside Ovation of the Seas. We are always in Deck 15 as it has the best photo areas for your Instagram! Haha.

Aside from that, you can also avail these things: A Running Track so you will stay fit even with all the good food of Sorento's, The Grande, and Windjammer:

For a level up fitness life, they also have a guided rock climbing wall:

The North Star, a free attraction that ascends 300 feet above sea level, so you can get a gorgeous bird's eye view of the ship and what surrounds it! Guests can can reserve slots for this, or line up / walk-in.

Speaking of flying, we tried RipCord by iFly on our first night! Located next to the Flow Rider (surfing), experience the exhilaration of skydiving even without leaving the deck! It is safe and fun, and perfect icebreaker for our group!

A funny screencaps of my "flight" haha! It's scary at first, but everyone was able to do it!

For the kids and kids at heart, you can waste time in the arcade and win cool prizes like Funko Pops, Polaroid camera, or GoPro!

SeaPlex is a huge indoor venue, Ovation of the Seas own gym, where you can play or participate in a lot of activities! One time they even had dance classes here!

They also hold trapeze lessons, basketball day, roller skates day, table tennis, and bump cars day here! Just check the daily sched so you won't miss anything. Imagine accomplishing all these cool activities during your cruise, and discovering and getting hooked on a new hobby after your trip! Haha!

There's also an XBOX room:

More gaming zones:

And a free hotdogs booth!

If your goal is more of to relax, they also have Vitality Salon and Spa onboard. They offer facials from USD 113 to USD 190, different massages from USD 111 to 381, body treatments like salt scrubs and cellulite reduction program, shaving and grooming, cut and style, acupuncture, teeth whitening, manicure and pedicure, waxing services, etc! I'd say, they have everything you want!!

DECK 16
Vitality Fitness Center

And lastly, on Deck 16 is the ship's 24 hours gym Vitality Fitness Center. I never exercised during a vacation, but being on a cruise is different! Since the gym is just on the top deck, and we ate so much throughout the day, our group is very enabling when it comes to adding a fitness life to our itinerary for the day! Just 30 minutes on the treadmill is enough to feel a little less guilty after eating so much in the buffet, hehehe.

Right next to the gym is The Studio, where the hold cycling sessions by schedule.

Proper attire (closed shoes) is required to use the fitness center:

They have all the basic equipment in a gym, imagine going here in the morning and watch the sunrise as you run!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs answered by Ms. Alexa of Royal Caribbean! If you have more inquiries, don't hesitate to leave them on the comment box below so I can redirect them to Ms. Alexa for you. ★

Here goes!

Do you need visas for routes with Japan, Taiwan, China, and other countries that require one?

For PHL passport holder, we do not require visa in Japan if the town/cities are just ports of call meaning guests will not start and end the cruise in Japan. For Taiwan ports visa is waived but for all Shanghai and Beijing, China roundtrip sailings, double entry China visa is needed.

Do you get a stamp on your passport during a cruise?

Most of the countries in Asia do not stamp passports for guests doing the shore excursions, however there are still other countries like Vietnam and Thailand where in Immigration officers go to the ship and stamp the passports.

One of our stops during the cruise is in Hoi An, Vietnam:

Are you required to go down the ship for every stop? Is it recommended to get a tour, and where? Is DIY travel during these stops also possible?

Going down the ship is optional, the freedom on staying onboard and having the ship all by yourself is possible. Should you want to join the tours, you may avail one prior the sailing thru the website or buy tours onboard 1 day prior arriving on the port of call.

There are many ports that has independent car/van for rent for your DIY tours, you just need the address of the port and be at the pier terminal 1hour prior the ship departs.

Is it better and cheaper to book earlier? Are there seasons when fares are cheaper / more expensive?

The ideal time to book is at least 6 months prior where rates are cheaper and you can choose good location of cabins. For Philippine Market the rates will be basically cheaper if booked prior.

What are the different room types?

There are basically four types of cabins, however with Royal Caribbean's new ships we introduced different kind of cabin types.

  • Interior - no view
  • Oceanview - with view of the ocean thru a window (cannot be open)
  • Balcony - with extended area outside the ship
  • Suites - with extended area outside the ship and has more exclusive amenities
Cabin Type for Royal Caribbean Ships:

Interior
  • Interior with Virtual Balcony - with digital panel (floor to ceiling) where guests can see the view outside:

  • Promenade - Interior cabin with a window overlooking the ship (onboard Voyager Class ship only) :

Oceanview

  • Boardwalk View - (available on Oasis Class ships only)
  • Central Park View - (available on Oasis Class ships only)

Balcony

  • Boardwalk view with Balcony - (available on Oasis Class ships only)
  • Central Park view with Balcony - (available on Oasis Class ships only)

Loft Suites

Are the published rates per room or per head?
Yes, all rates are per person.

Is it same price for kids / senior citizens?
There are sailings where rates for kids and senior citizens are reduced, there are even sailings where kids (12 years old and below) can cruise for free. Also senior citizen would start from the age of 55 and above.

What's the most affordable fare / route?
The rate differs per route, the cheapest would still be the Singapore itinerary for 3nights can go as low as $200-$300 per person (inclusive of food, activities onboard, shows, cabin type-interior)

Here are some screencaps of sample Royale Caribbean cruise routes with rates from the website:

Visit http://www.cruising.com.ph to book your cruise!

What are the restos that have door charges (and how much), and what are the ones that are already included in the payment / fare?

Is the cruise kid-friendly?
Yes! Royal Caribbean is for the whole family with different kind of activities the kids and kids at heart will surely enjoy. Click HERE to know more about onboard activities.

DEBARK (Conclusion)

Lastly, ending this post with personal insights about the cruise life with Royal Caribbean' Ovation of the Seas!

1) First of all, TEAM AVAIL will win in life (or the cruise life, that is!). If you want to make the most of the fare that you will pay to be in this ship, make sure to maximize everything your ship has to offer--and they have a lot! They even have language classes and free shows that you can avail, you just have to BOOK for your slots. Most restaurants are also free but have to be reserved prior dining. Review everything on your first day, and grab all that you can during your whole excursion!

2) Sea Sick? Maalon ba? I also got this question so many times and I'd say I only felt the huge waves every time we leave a port. Later on, nasasanay na ako that it doesn't bother me much anymore. Sadly, it's hard to tell for me as I think this is case-to-case basis, medyo hindi kasi ako mahiluhin in general so it's not bothersome for me. The common thing that happened to our group though was during our first night back in the city after the cruise, we all felt na parang nasa boat padin kami! It's the "jetlag" version daw of post-cruise life!

3) What to prepare for a cruise? I made sure to bring casual clothes, a jacket as it gets colder inside the ship especially the theater, gym outfit (although I just used my porma sneakers), swimming outfit so you can enjoy the water amenities, and at least one dressy outfit for that fancy dinner or show at night. This is not required, but better to be prepared! I just packed a black blazer with me which made any of my looks a bit put-together.

Also, bring your medicines! Kremil-S when you had too much to eat and drink (lol), Advil for headaches, Claritin for sudden allergies. They have a clinic though, which you can call from your room if you need anything. I also noticed that my skin got drier while on the ship, so bring moisturizer, sunblock, and lotion! They only gave us bottled water on our first day, keep this and just refill it in any of the restos throughout your stay to keep your body hydrated.

4) It will take a day or two just cruising, did you get bored? Surprisingly, never ako nabore during our cruise. Aside from great company (naks hahaha), there's just so much to see and do (see #1). I thought I will get lots of downtime and watch my Kdrama during the full days of just cruising, but we had so much things we wanted to try! One time when we were touring outside on a hot day, I even heard my friends wanting to just go back "home" aka our ship!! It's the opposite, you will miss the boat!

5) Cruising is for everybody! I thought the cruise life is only for older people and for people who can afford it. But Royal Caribbean has plenty of route options and amenities to cater different people. Cruise is for all ages and for any types of groups--families, group of friends, or even when you just want to be away on your own.

We are so used to on-the-go travels that we forget why vacations were even made in the first place: To relax and be away from your current reality! Going on a cruise for the first time, I realized that I found that much needed disconnection that I want whenever I am on a trip--to be away from the city, with everything I need in one roof, all the food that I want, different hobbies, activities and entertainment that I can try. THIS is a VACATION!

Lastly, I'd like to thank my cruise friends who made a great experience like this even more extra, thank you guys! For the stories, the food trips, gym push, beautiful photos, and extra cookie every night, haha! 😉 And a big thank you to Drew and Ms. Alexa for taking care of us. I am glad that my first international cruise experience is with the BEST!

Fast Break: VIETNAM! | Cruise Stops and Traveling As Part Of A Cruise

$
0
0

I used to ask how travels go when you're part of a cruise. I experienced it first hand just recently when I joined a Royal Caribbean cruise.

Our port of entry and exit were Hong Kong and Singapore, although we weren't really able to go around because of time constraints. It is possible though to stay and explore these two countries, again up to you or your sched.

Meanwhile, our cruise stops in three cities in Vietnam, namely Hoi An, Nha Trang, and Ho Chi Minh. I learned that it is NOT REQUIRED to go down the ship, you have the option to just stay aboard and avail the amenities. Meanwhile, I think I prefer to take part with the tours (although there are separate fees for this, not yet included in the cruise fare) after staying for more than 24 hours with just the view of the sea. It's a nice welcome to go out and eat foods from the street!

Going out of the ship usually starts early morning, it's the same for the three days we had a tour. We had a quick breakfast in Chic, before heading to the Royal Theater where groups gather for their tickets and numbered stickers (according to tour bus) that we always have to wear on our shirts. One by one, a host onstage will call on the group number, then once called, we go down to Deck 2, tap our SeaPass cards, and then exit the boat to our tour bus.

Make sure to be on time or the tour bus will leave you. Also, no need to get your passports or have it stamped. I checked mine now and saw that it already has a Vietnam stamp on it!

Some useful information about tours while on a cruise, lifted from my Q&A with Ms. Alexa from Royal Caribbean:

Are you required to go down the ship for every stop?
Going down the ship is optional, the freedom on staying onboard and having the ship all by yourself is possible.

Is it recommended to get a tour, and where? Is DIY travel during these stops also possible?
Should you want to join the tours, you may avail one prior the sailing thru the website or buy tours onboard 1 day prior arriving on the port of call.

There are many ports that has independent car/van for rent for your DIY tours, you just need the address of the port and be at the pier terminal 1hour prior the ship departs.

And finally, here are snippets from the 3-day tour we had in Vietnam as Royal Caribbean passengers.

Hoi An
7 Hours 30 Minutes

Hoi An is a well-preserved ancient Old Town, a historic trading port and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Danang, Vietnam. In this colorful town where every street is decorated with lamps, we had our very first legit Vietnamese lunch outside the ship!

Then the group splits according to priorities, we roamed around the 2000-year-old, pedestrian-only streets, checked out local handicraft shops, art galleries, and beautiful cafes. The speeding and criss-crossing bicycles that outnumbered the pedestrians just shows that we really are in Vietnam already! And with just a few hours out of the ship, my friends and I have already witnessed colliding bikes!!

It's nice that we immediately have Vietnam food by making sure to dine in a local restaurant for lunch!

The charm of Hoi An is its colorful place AND people!

Our last stop was in this pretty birdcage themed cafe! Then we're immediately heading back to our bus for our ship.

Nha Trang
5 Hours 15 Minutes

Our time in Nha Trang felt short, but at least we got to see a few of the city's highlights including its spiritual heritage and cultural splendors. We visited Long Son Pagoda with the huge Buddha statue, toured the sacred Po Nagar Cham Towers complex, had lunch by Nha Trang's beach, before ending the trip in a local Vietnamese embroidery shop with live demo.

We docked in the middle of the ocean, and rode small boats heading to the port:

This part of Nha Trang reminds me of Bagan:

And even Busan! Haha!

My favorite stop for this tour was our lunch by the beach. After eating, we went nearer the water, took beach photos, and just enjoyed the sun and sand before we had to go back to our bus again.

Legit Vietnamese coffee is super strong but delicious!!

Vietnamese art appreciation in a local embroidery showroom:

Market stop for a little bit of shopping:

Ho Chi Minh
7 Hours

I've been to Ho Chi Minh in 2010 when there's no Instagram yet! It has been a while that I think I've forgotten most of the places we've been to, so I am glad Ho Chi Minh is also part of our itinerary. French colonial buildings, sky-high cathedrals, sacred Buddhist temples, and local cafes made up this diverse city.

In less than a day, we saw the Notre Dame Cathedral, the late 19th century Central Post Office, had a tour in the Reunification Palace (former home of the President of South Vietnam), Giac Lam Pagoda (the city's oldest Buddhist temple), and finally ending our tour with Vietnamese coffee in one of the many indie cafes in Dong Khoi Street.

I will always be amazed by our similarities and differences. Traveling makes me appreciate humanity more.

One of the best meals we had while in Vietnam! I love the Vietnamese coffee here!!!

Best discovery! Bianca brought us to The Cafe Apartment in Ho Chi Minh, an old apartment building  housing all-local and very arty coffee shops! Imagine trying the different cafes here on your vacation in Vietnam!

We picked a coffee shop named Dosh where they serve cute donuts and iced coffee. Medyo mabagal service though, we had to slurp our drink and run to our bus for our call time!

Here are some things and tips I picked up while touring as part of a cruise:

1) Very Important: Do not expect too much so you won't get disappointed. When you book for a cruise, know that you will enjoy it because of the ship and what it has to offer, and not much because of the different stops and destinations. It will be super brief. We only had about 5 to 7 hours for the land tour, and this already included the travel time. Then you have to go back to your ship right away or else it will leave you!!

2) Although I have internet onboard, I made sure to bring a pocket WiFi with me and was able to maximize it during the tours! You need to communicate with your group especially during free and easy tours or when you're in a market where groups usually disperse.

3) As for your pocket money, I withdrew from the ship's ATM which dispenses US Dollars. A lot, if not all of the shops we've been to in Vietnam accepts USD, but will give you Vietnamese currency for your change (medyo sayang). You can also use your Visa / Mastercard, although some shops especially in markets do not accept credit cards.

4) Lastly, just enjoy whatever you can, don't set your standards too high and list so many things you want to accomplish na parang you're on your usual DIY trip. For the first time, medyo nag chill lang ako and just enjoyed what's in front of me and what our tour guide has to offer. Just think of it as a nice stopover, a break from the ship life.

Malaysia Bucket List: To Stay In Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa!

If I see myself in Malaysia again, I have two main things on my bucket list: 1) Go to Penang, and 2) Stay longer in Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa!

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa is one of the largest hotel developments in Kuala Lumpur, located within the integrated township of Sunway City. The vibrant 800-acre land seamlessly integrates a cluster of 3 hotels (Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Sunway Pyramid Hotel and Sunway Clio Hotel), conference and convention centres, a theme park, a mega shopping and entertainment mall, medical centre, educational facilities and a multitude of distinctive business and leisure facilities for an all-inclusive experience and convenience.

SUNWAY RESORT HOTEL AND SPA

The flagship hotel in Sunway City is the 5-star Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. As one of the most iconic hotel in Kuala Lumpur, a dramatic neo classical façade welcomes guests to superlative features and thematic architectural designs. The hotel offers a collection of 468 well-appointed guestrooms, suites and pool villas. Most rooms have a view of Sunway Lagoon or the city’s skyline; some provide balcony with an opportunity to walk out to the gardens and swimming pool.

The Club guestrooms and suites in Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa are designed for a lifestyle of added comfort, privacy and exclusivity with all the necessary facilities and services to cater for business executives and leisure traveller on-the-go.

The Villas is Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa’s accommodation nestled within the 800-acres of the resort’s lush tropical gardens. Each pool-villa features a master suite, private plunge pool, sunken bathtub and rain-shower facilities, leafy balcony, and numerous leisure facilities. Mandara Spa is located adjacent to The Villas.

The more private area for The Villas guests:

SUNWAY PYRAMID HOTEL

The 4.5-star Sunway Pyramid Hotel brings great comfort and functionality. The hotel showcases a collection of 564 guestrooms, which includes the Deluxe category rooms and 21 purpose-built family rooms and suites (larger rooms, can accommodate up to 6). Located at the lobby level is Kaffeinate, an express café that serves light snacks and refreshments for dine-in and takeaway.

We stayed in Sunway Pyramid Hotel for a night. It may seem small, but it is actually spacious, clean, and had everything we need. I had a comfortable sleep, plus the shower / toilet room is HUGE!

SUNWAY CLIO HOTEL

The 26-storey 4-star Sunway Clio Hotel features 401 guestrooms with a choice of two (2) room types – Deluxe Plus and Deluxe Plus Executive Rooms; with options of rooms with unimpeded views of Sunway Lagoon or the city’s skyline.

Leisure and business facilities in the hotel includes five (5) meeting rooms with a capacity of 20 to 150 persons, an all-day dining outlet, an outdoor swimming pool and a 24-hour fitness centre that overlooks the city’s dramatic skyline.

Adjoining Sunway Clio Hotel is the Sunway Pyramid Mall’s retail enclave – Sunway Pyramid West, where hotel guests can look forward to more food and beverage offerings.

SHOPPING MALL AND RESTAURANTS

Right next to the hotels and resort is Sunway's shopping mall where guests can enjoy fiverse food and beverage outlets.

Here's a list of some of their food choices:
  • The Resort Caféall-day dining restaurant presents a wide range of àla carte specialties, chefs’ signatures and buffet spreads of flavourful Malaysian, Asian and regional favourites with a selection of Middle Eastern and Western cuisines including two (2) voluminous salad and fruit towers featuring fresh seasonal greens and fruits.
Enjoyed our breakfast buffet here, plus service is A+!
  • The Lobby Lounge - the perfect venue for afternoon tea and evening cocktails with a comprehensive list of beverages and snacks, while enjoying a series of live music performances daily.
  • Cherootz - For cigar and whiskey lovers, they offer a relaxing and intimate space in the lounge for some private sessions with friends or business partners.
  • Busaba Thai
  • Eight Gourmets Gala (E.G.G)
  • Grand Imperial Chinese Restaurant
  • Kaffeinate
  • Café West
  • Starbucks Coffee
  • Sanoook
Lunch was in Sanoook where I had vegetarian sushi, and where they play Filipino songs! So cool!

  • Menya Miyabi
  • Hokkaido Ramen
  • Impressoul Gastrology
  • Slappy Cakes
  • Parenthood - one-stop parenting hub providing edutainment and leisure activities including an exciting indoor playground for the little ones, a café, a beauty salon, children speciality shops, an international pre-school and child-minding services for the ultimate in convenience.
We had dinner in Hotpot Kitchen on our first night in Sunway. Serving size is huge so make sure you bring with you your big appetite when you dine in. I love that their selection of veggies are all fresh!

SUNWAY LAGOON

Meanwhile, the 88-acre Sunway Lagoon multi-park destination offers over 90 rides and attractions spread across its six (6) signature parks - Water Park, Extreme Park, Amusement Park, Wildlife Park, Scream Park and the Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon - the first Nickelodeon themed land in Asia featuring more than 10 rides.

The Water Park lays claim to the world's largest man-made beach; the Sunway Surf Beach – stretching over 13,000 square metres, the surf pool is able to generate perfectly shaped waves up to eight (8) feet, and has been an irresistible draw to many events.

Other attractions in the theme park include the world’s highest, largest and most thrilling water ride, the Vuvuzela, Malaysia's first permanent bungee jump by AJ Hackett and the country's first surf simulator - the FlowRider combining surfing, wakeboarding and skateboarding. Sunway Lagoon is also home to the World’s First Waterplexx 5D.

I was so decided that I will just go to the extreme rides and not swim na, but this view of the pool was so tempting I almost gave in!!

Wasn't able to explore the Nickelodeon side of Sunway, must go back and stay for 3 days, or maybe even a week!

Warm-up before the rides: Archery! Haha!

If extreme rides is your thing, they have a lot to offer at the Sunway Extreme Park and Amusement Park!

This ride FLIPS to 360 degrees!! 😂

We got wet nadin by the end of our day at the theme park! Haha!

The best part is that Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa is just 35 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), and 25 minutes to the city center. Again, I wish I can go here again and stay longer on my next trip in Malaysia!

Favorite Classic Autumn Looks #TimelessStyle #ElectroluxFashionCare

It has been proven... I get more inspired to dress up during and after my autumn trips! I love the colors associated to this season, and it's so lovely to watch people walking by the streets of Japan or Korea with well-coordinated clothes imitating the colors of trees during fall: golds and reds, oranges and browns. Everything's so breathtaking from the nature view to people's fashion sense!

During my recent trip to Tokyo, I picked up a few classic autumn styles from store visits, and mostly from the stylish locals I came across during our many commutes.

Here are some of my favorites:

1) PLAIDS

Plaids are classic prints, but they look especially great this season! Aside from seeing them on long sleeve polos, they are also cute on your trousers and backpacks! I love that Anello Philippines came up with a holiday collection featuring their classic backpack style but in different plaid patterns!

We often see the usual red-blue and blue-green colors for this, but you can also upgrade the style by looking for other color combinations like my current favorite yellow-brown!

2) CORDUROY

Corduroy has always been around, but I think it's getting more attention than before! An alternative to our DENIMS, corduroy can also be a pretty thick and hot for Manila's climate. But you can still sport them here through your cap or bucket hat, your bag, skirt, or trousers! My current favorite is corduroy in brown or yellow!

3) MUTED TONES

Autumn is all about more subdued and less bright colors, so I do away with pastels or even white for the meantime. Aside from black, my favorite muted tones are burgundy, olive, and navy blue.

Wearing monotone, almost all-olive green pieces for this look:

4 LEOPARD PRINT

Just like plaid, leopard or cheetah prints are classic autumn prints that have withstood trends. They can be a bit WILD (haha) for some, but pairing this print with plain pieces makes a classier look. I love matching leopard print pieces with denims or browns (or both!).

5) TEXTURES (VELVET / FUR / SUEDE)

Styling game is stronger when you utilize textures on your clothing. Adding a touch of either velvet, fur, or suede on my outfit makes it more unique and even holiday ready! In Tokyo, I wore a black tracksuit which is already common, but what made this pair from Mossimo special is the material--they're black velvet!

Again, it's harder to wear this in our climate, but you can still wear a touch of velvet or suede through your jacket (that you can take off outside), skirt, or bag.

I can say that these styles are easily classic autumn looks that goes back on-trend again and again, year after year. I know I will wear them again next year! Just style them differently and it will look different and still look great.
And since you'll be storing most of these clothes for next year, it's best to take care of these pieces so you don't have to buy again. This also goes for stuff you buy for autumn and winter trips like your coats and Heattech warmers. First tip is to make sure you have good storage spaces. Be mindful of sensitive materials like fur, suede, and most especially leather! You have to take them out of your closet from time to time and let the clothing breathe. Sometimes I even keep those small paper packs you often find in new bags, and put them in my closet. These are made to keep moulds, moist, and even odors away.
And last but often taken for granted, wash your garments using the right washing machine designed to care for your clothes like Electrolux. Electrolux has an UltraMix technology that keeps the softness, shape, and color of your clothing so you can wear it for years, and it will never look worn out!
Best part is that Electrolux is energy efficient! By this, it reduces energy consuption by 75% while guaranteeing long lasting performance.

No wonder why Filipino fashion designer icon Rajo Laurel trusts Electrolux!
"Doing your laundry is more than just making your clothes clean. It's making sure your clothes look better, newer, longer. And with Electrolux UltimateCare Washing Machine, it does exactly that. And I love it."
Check out Electrolux's Amazing HoliDeals to avail up to 25% discount:

Like the cycle of season, fashion also makes expected comebacks. Classic, as they put it. Make sure to invest on clothes that will be with you through the years, backed with proper clothing care through the right storage and technology.

I have a lot of fond memories with Korean beauty brand INNISFREE.

Innisfree My Real Squeeze Mask is the first sheet mask I've tried, as it is the usual pasalubong and request of family and friends coming from a Korea trip.

Innisfree Jeju House was also a stopover during my first time in Jeju-do, they have a huge farm there right next to another Korean fave Osulloc Green Tea.

Green Tea Farm, Autumn 2016

Same location, but this time in Winter 2018:

That's the green tea farm during winter!!!

I've also visited the Innisfree Green Cafe in Myeongdong several times since it opened, but the memorable one was solo trip last winter when I needed to hangout somewhere warm and homey, have coffee, take the loo, and leave my stuff before meeting up with a friend.

Aside from the store and the coffee shop, they have a toilet room with Innisfree products, and FREE LOCKER on this branch.

I love you Innisfree!!!

And more recently during my Mimi Shop guesting, Sandara easily recognized my powder when I took out my makeup essentials (it's the Innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Powder). They were also shocked when I told them we don't have Innisfree yet in the Philippines!

I can go on and on, but let me get straight to the point of this post! Posting photos from Innisfree Philippines' first ever store in Manila, located in the Main Atrium of SM Mall of Asia! Went there for two straight days, one for the media launch, and yesterday for the official public opening. Alam nyo even if I am not invited to the event, I can imagine myself lining up for this brand!

Ribbon cutting during yesterday's public opening, VJ Sunny as the host:

The people who came in really early! First in lines, sobrang naaamaze ako what time you wake up to get there!!!

Let's go inside the store!

Oppas will welcome you, and they are very willing to take selfies too! Haha!

The Innisfree ladies are very knowledgeable about the products, and are very willing to assist you.

Met one lucky lady who got the Innisfree x Lee Min Ho photo book! The first 100 to avail Php 2000 and above got this for free.

More limited freebies for buyers: Im Yoon-Ah and Lee Min Ho mini standees.

This was during the media launch. Was curious what the girls were checking out! It's the cushions and foundation section pala!

SOME THINGS TO NOTE:

1) You can also enjoy the VR experience in Innisfree Philippines! You have to watch the one featuring Lee Min Ho, napaka realistic! Haha!

2) Innisfree also has an Eco-Recycling Program, which I only discovered now but has been practiced by the brand for years now. Dispose your empty bottle in the store so you are guaranteed they are recycled properly.

3) The product line is pretty much complete! Well, almost all the stuff I was looking for they have din... and even more! They have wider shade range for foundations (darker) to suit the Filipino market.

4) Although we have most of the products they have in Korea, what we still don't carry are:

1) Innisfree x Dashing Diva nails
2) Innisfree Green Cafe

So if you're reading this Innisfree, then I am sure your loyal following will love to have these too! :)

5) For the price, I'd say Innisfree Philippines is fairly competitive with the prices in Seoul! Except for the sheet masks na forever 10+10 in Korea, most are almost same price or close enough.

6) Yes, THEY ACCEPT SODEXO in the store so YAS!!!

7) Expect more branches in the Philippines NEXT YEAR. So north peeps, get readeh!

###

That's it! Do you have other favorite Innisfree products I wasn't able to mention here? What's on your list that you think I'd also love???

A bit long overdue, but finally I can say... Welcome to my home, Innisfree!!!!!

AVARA NATURE YACHT CLUB: Experience serene, luxurious seaside living in Taytay, Palawan

$

0

Imagine this: The sound of waves crashing on the shore and the sunlight peeking through the window wake you up on a lazy Saturday morning. You slowly open your eyes, afraid that you're just in the middle of a dream. But you're not. You stand up as you feel the gentle sea breeze touch your face. You go out of the porch and look at the horizon. You take your time to enjoy the beauty of the blue skies and the deep sea. The yacht will be waiting for you whenever you're ready, anyway. That's the promise of Avara Nature & Yacht Club-the easy life of the seaside.

Established by the Seaside Premier Development Corporation, Avara is the first of its kind nature and yacht club located at Calauag Bay in Taytay, which was Palawan's first capital.

The plan for the exclusive resort was formally unveiled at the Grand Hyatt Manila led by its President and CEO Ms. Veronica C. Young.

"After many months of sailing and voyaging aboard bangkas and riding waves, we found the perfect island in Taytay, Palawan to be the home of our pioneering project. It is with a great pleasure to present to you tonight, Avara Nature and Yacht Club - the first of its kind in the Philippines, bridging the middle class to the lifestyle of the rich and famous. As Seaside Premier Development Corporation's flagship project, we aim to redefine seaside living, where nature meets luxury," she said in her opening remarks.

COASTAL LIVING REDEFINED

Avara, which means Sunshine Island, is an eco-luxurious resort that use solar panels as a source of renewable energy, utilize a recycled water treatment system, maximize a hydroponic garden, and take advantage of other eco-materials available.

Its accommodation is inspired by the Maldivian architecture. Members can choose to stay in a one-bedroom Water Villa with jacuzzi, two-bedroom Water Villa with private infinity pool, or one- or two-bedroom Beach Casitas.

Aside from the villas and casitas, Avara members will also have an exclusive access to a two-bedroom yacht with crew for an overnight stay or for cruising around the island and nearby areas. Avara's yacht features two cabins and a family room in the lower deck; a living room, a kitchen and dining area, and a plunge pool in the main deck; and an open dining space and a sun deck in the fly bridge.

The Avara Island has nothing but the best facilities for its members. Guests will first experience the Avara service upon their arrival at the dock or the harbor. But the ultra-luxurious resort also has a helipad for those who will be coming in by air. VIPs also have the option to skip the reception and go straight to their accommodation.

There will also be a boardwalk open for development to entrepreneurial Avara member. Meaning, Avara members can also be concessionaires to open their own business-it could be a coffee shop, a grocery store, a bakery, a souvenir stop, and similar ventures. As support to the member-concessionaires, Avara will ensure that the business will be the island's lone supplier for the specific product.

The island can also accommodate as many as 100 guests at their main dining area and at the grill restaurant. But guests will have more dining options since Avara includes a poolside bar, a seaside bar and lounge, picnic areas, and private dining venues.

Avara is fully equipped with a gym, a water sports center, a tennis court, and a golf course to those who want to keep up with their fitness routine.

The island also has a playroom and nursery, spa and massage cabanas, a bonfire area, a clinic with an in-house doctor and nurse, and a gaming area for the enjoyment of the Avara members.

At any given time, Avara will host up to 300 members to ensure quality service.

As a promised paradise for those who love the beach, Avara offers a myriad of water action such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, jet-skiing, banana boat riding, stand-up paddle boarding, wind surfing, scuba diving, island hopping, and fishing in coordination with neighbor islands. The resort also provides options for on land activities like trekking, biking, and vegetable picking.

There are also a lot of activities that Avara members can enjoy outside its vicinity. After all, Taytay, Palawan boasts of picturesque sites like the Canique Waterfalls, the Lake Manguao, the Irrawaddy Dolphins in Malampaya Sound, the Fuerza de Santa Isabel, and the Church of Santa Monica. Taytay is also hope to a paradise-like hidden valley that gives tourists a bird's eye view of the pristine, idyllic coastal areas of the municipality.

BOARD OF ADVISORS

To ensure nothing but the best of services and facilities at Avara, Seaside Premier Development Corporation tapped some of the industry's most respected personalities for the resort.

Its board of advisors include the following:

- National Coast Watch Center Executive Director Rear Admiral Joel S. Garcia for Coastal and Marine Management

- Philippine Army's 7CMO Battalion Commanding Officer Col. Eugene Osias for Security Affairs

- Cebu Port Authority Commissioner for the Shipping Sector Ms. Regina Barleta for Port Management and Shipping

- Incoming Manila Board of Realtors, Inc. President Ma. Teresa R. Bigornia for Marketing

- Motivational speaker John Anthony Calub for Sales

- The Manor's Le Chef Executive Chef William "Billy" King for Culinary Arts

"We thank these distinguished personalities for believing in our idea. We can't wait to show you the beauty of Avara," Ms. Young said.
