North Life: Things Things To Do in Fisher Mall Malabon + Staycation with Zen Rooms

Alam nyo naisip ko lang, if I live in the north siguro things would have been so different. I have no regrets living the slow paced "chill" life of a south girl with my family, but sobrang saya din to once in a while stay around EDSA where most, if not all of my friends reside. Siguro parati akong asa labas! Haha!

For my day 1 in the north, my friends and I visited the newly opened Fisher Mall branch in Malabon. It was a festive celebration, almost coinciding with the Chinese New Year. We were there for the opening ceremonies, mass, and then a little tour, but we also had the chance to hangout and eat in their food court The Galley, shop a little in the Fisher Supermart, and of course take lots of awra photos! Hehehe! More ganaps below!

Attended the ribbon cutting, mass, and lunch at the mall's activity center:

They have my favorite fried noodles at their food hall The Galley! Sobrang cheap thrill ko ito before nung hardcore commuter pa ako, an order is only about Php 50!

Parang mga high school students na naka recess haha! We talked about Love Languages (one of my favorite topics haha), and kinilig naman sila sa aking "What made your heart flutter" moments hehehe.

A cutie that we met while strolling around the mall! Good news: All Fisher Malls are pet friendly establishments, so you can bring your fur baby while relaxing or doing errands.

After parting ways with the group, Ava and I checked in our accommodation for one night (since we have more north commitments the next day). We decided to book a room with ZEN Rooms since they usually offer the most affordable and practical accommodations in and outside the Metro.

The nearest room from Fisher Mall Malabon and Quezon City is at Vinia Residences, just across MRT North Edsa Station! What I like about this room:

1) Room is spacious enough for two persons and our things.
2) It is also complete with everything I need for a night: a comfortable bed, clean towels, toiletries (although bring nadin if you need more), wifi, and hot shower.
3) It is very affordable, for only Php 1400+ for the room per night!
4) For your other needs, there's a nearby convenience store (Mini Stop), and the mall is just across (walking distance passing through the MRT walkway).
5) Security is tight, so I felt safe even when we're located on the main road aka EDSA. We ordered Mcdo Delivery for breakfast, and was called by the lobby when Kuya arrived. We had to go down to pickup our orders. Ok nadin, it just means hindi sila basta nagpapa akyat sa rooms.

Here are more pictures of our Zen Rooms in Vinia Residences, Quezon City:

You can see the MRT and the mall from the room's window. It can get a bit noisy at night, but was too tired to even bother (bring ear plugs if you are sensitive to noise).

Essentials: No need to pack for towels and basic toiletries as these are all provided already.

Toilet and bath area:

Our bed and a small closet with hangers. They also have a landline phone when you want to call any local number (like food delivery services).

A TV, a small dining area where I did my makeup and skincare, and a mini couch:

Kitchenette with an electric stove, mugs, sink, microwave, and ref:

Inside the closet are plates, utensils, glasses, pans, rice cooker, etc.

Use my promo code ZENVIPANAGON for 20% discount on your booking at https://www.zenrooms.com!

My Life As A Vegetarian + Honestbee Now Offers Healthy Eats!

I can still remember my first attempt on becoming a vegetarian.

The Failed Attempts, But Worth The Try

I was a high school fresh grad, and as a part of a small team of seniors who volunteered to finish our batch year book, I went to our empty school daily for several weeks to work with the group. We finished our assigned tasks every morning, and then go out of the campus by 12 noon. Having the first feel of spending money outside of school, I will have my lunch in the "fancy fast food" that I know of at that time: Kenny Rogers. They have this side sampler on their menu where I can pick three side dishes and get a free corn muffin on the side for only 70 Pesos. I will always get their mashed potatoes, corn and carrots, and then one random vegetable side dish available for the day. I ordered the same meal everyday during the whole duration of our yearbook project.

When I started college, I went back to eating sisig (a dish from chopped parts of a pig's snout and ears) and my favorite Friday's chicken fingers. I indulged in KFC's unlimited gravy, and split the bucket of chicken with my friends during our lunch breaks! I thought it's the end of my vegetarian phase. In my senior year, I felt a bit lost so I decided to join several school organizations to, as friends will always say, find myself again. One of the orgs I dedicated my time in was our university's yoga club.

I was so active in our club at that time, and even attended outside school events. Naalala ko yung food in this particular event, buffet pero lahat makakain ko coz vegetarian. :)

We had once a week hatha yoga sessions, and huge inter-school activities like World Yoga Day celebrations. Being surrounded by vegetarians who passionately talk about their lifestyle encouraged me to try it again. And so I decided to research more about going meatless while using our school's free internet at the library's computer room. With volume down, I watched PETA's extreme videos on how they slaughter pigs, treat huge cows like sardines in small pens, and inhumanely remove chicken beaks. It was the next level of morbid, so it became even more difficult for me to eat meat again.

As With Anything, You Have To Have Your Why

I am a vegetarian for more than a decade already. I have several reasons why I prefer a meatless diet, and every time I meet a new person who learns about this, I pick a different reason from my pool of answers just for kicks. Haha! Reason one is my university yoga club story, the easiest to spill is having food allergies.

Another story is how my dad, who was a vegetarian during my formative years, influenced me. I was around 10 years old when dad will pick me up from basketball practice to bring me to food places like Sanitarium and Varona, which are hole-in-the-wall vegetarian canteens he discovered while working as a roving salesman around old Manila (I wonder kung bukas padin tong mga to!). We will order barbecue made from soy, aroz ala cubana that's made of tofu. Even then, I knew I will eventually become a vegetarian because it's the right thing to do, and I had these thoughts at such a young age! But more than influences from people I look up to, I've always been a big animal lover.

Even post college, I find myself enrolling in a yoga class from time to time. Aside from physical wellness, it also helps me find my inner balance. I super miss it!

I was reminded of the perks of attending yoga classes when I was invited by Honestbee, an online concierge and delivery service, in the launch of the Organic, Fresh and Healthy category in their app. One of the activities during the event is a 30-minute yoga class in YogaHive.

It's Easier NOW!

If you want to try vegetarianism or just eat healthy, the best time to start is NOW. Imagine ordering your groceries or healthy eats online after your yoga class! Thank you Honestbee for making healthy living even more accessible and convenient. No excuses na talaga!

They even offer different meal delivery services, depending on your preference! I was hesitant to try these services because they are usually not available in Alabang, or hindi nila mahanap bahay ko haha! But I've been using Honestbee for a while now and sobrang okay talaga their delivery service, on time and very courteous riders.

Not An Instant Thing

I never ate fish and other seafoods ever since I can remember, I never got used to its stench. I guess this is one reason why it's easier for me to transition since I only have pork, beef, and chicken to let go of. I still eat eggs and dairies like butter and cheese, so I read up more about this and learned that vegetarianism has several categories. I fall under Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian, or people who don't eat meat and fish but still consume dairies and other animal by-products.

The process is not instant, but I eventually let go of meat one-by-one, day-by-day, week-by-week. As I always say to people asking for advice on vegetarianism, just do it one step at a time. I started with doing away with huge chunks of meat like steak, pork chop, or the beef my mom adds in our nilaga, which I can't chew on anymore. Then I became aware that some pasta dishes contain tiny ground meat, and even condiments like patis (fish sauce) have animal content. So I had to say good bye to those as well. It sounds difficult at first, but I was never too hard on myself. I allowed myself to go through the process of letting go and saying no to these animal products one by one, not all at once, and just be more selective and aware of what I take in. Slowly but surely, as long as I consistently do it every meal.

They served vegetarian options during the event. The caterer was one of my favorite restos with veg options: Green Pastures!

We also listened to healthy living talks with TimNutrition and my weightloss idol Marga Banaga during the event, nakaka inspire!

Here are just some of the healthy brands now available via Honestbee!

If you ask me what changed since I started this lifestyle, well! I still get pimples, even though they say that eating less meat will clear the skin. I still get fat because I love my carbs! But what I do know is that I am a human attempting to live a cruelty-free life. It has this sense of personal fulfillment that I don't need to brag about but I am proud of about myself every single day. It's a small difference to the environment, but a huge impact on my everyday life as someone who wants to live a more compassionate being not only to fellow humans but to all living creatures. (Side Note: Sabi din sakin ni Marcelo na kasama ko sa Iloilo trip na masayahin daw ako dahil vegetarian daw ako, haha!)

New Friend: Umiinom ka ba?
Me: Oo naman! Vegetarian naman ang beer diba? 😜

It's not all fine and dandy, though. I also had several negative incidents living as a vegetarian in a country that loves their lechon (roasted pig). I am used to weird stares from fast food servers who will raise their brows whenever I ask them not to put chicharon or to kindly just take out the bacon from my sandwich. They'll warn me with "Same price padin po yan ha?!" ("It's still going to be charged the same price okay?") or "Hindi na po yan kasing sarap!" ("It won't taste as good!"), but I've learned to just nod, pay for my food, and laugh it off. I'm too hungry to explain, hehe!

I also heard the lines "Kawawa ka naman!" ("I pity you!") and "Ano pang kinakain mo?" ("What do you eat?") too many times, but I also don't feel bad about them anymore! One line that I've already memorized how to answer is "Edi nagagalit ka pag kumakain kami ng meat sa harap mo?" ("So you get mad whenever we eat meat in front of you?"). I will just say that I am the only vegetarian in our household, but it doesn't make me love my family less.

Ate trying the must-eat Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap in Berlin, while I had the vegetarian version:

"Don't worry about me!"I hate making people I'm with feel hassled just because I am a vegetarian, but one of the ways I felt real love was when friends check out the menu first if I have anything to eat before we enter a resto. Pag events naman, si Pax yun tipong friend na hindi naman vegetarian pero pag biglang nakita niyang panay meat ang food mag aask na yan: "Wala bang gulay dito?!" Haha!

Maswerte ako sa friends ko huhuhu I love you guys!

Some people think that I eat like a goat, but reality check! I actually eat A LOT and not just grass and greens! Haha! So what do I eat? I always say that the taste of the food is in its sauce, so I never felt deprived. I just scout for meatless alternatives and make sure they have the sauce. Like for siomai (dumplings), I go to Rustan's East Cafe in Makati for their vegetarian siomai with soy sauce, kalamansi, and chili!

Favorite Places When I Eat Out
(To be updated)

Tag Tipid

1) Chowking Tofu (Plain) + Rice + Kang Kong (Request for no bagoong) + Chili Sauce
2) Karinderiya Meal: SiLog (Sinangag + Fried Egg), Tortang Talong (Double check if no meat), or Pansit Canton (hehe)
3) Plain Lugaw + Add tofu, chili sauce, soy sauce
4) Fresh lumpia in food court (around Php 50 only!) then order rice somewhere else

Sakto Lang

1) Taco Bell's Bean Burrito and Cheesy Fiesta Potato
2) Mongolian places - since you can choose what you put in your bowl
3) Lots of QC indie restos - favorite is Vegetarian Kitchen!

Splurge

1) Mexicali (Vegetarian Burrito, Cheese Enchilada, Cheese Quesadillas)
2) Halal Brothers (Falafel over rice + side order of hummus, extra veggies)
3) Green Pasture's Vegetarian Burger (still the best for me)
4) Ganso Shabuway's all veggies shabu shabu (includes unli rice)
5) North Park's broccoli flower and fried beancurd skin
6) BUFFET!

Since I always eat out with friends, I also discovered so many dishes that I can eat even in non-vegetarian restaurants. Yabu has a refillable plate that you can't find in their menu (rice, soup, cabbage salad, fruits), so I order that sans the katsu and just pick a random side dish as my ulam.

Being a vegetarian can also be quite expensive, since most of my orders are side dishes and not set meals. Although don't worry, I think it's a bit easier now to become a vegetarian compared to when I started more than a decade ago since more organic and health conscious restaurants are now opening here in Manila. Again, must-have apps for me are Happy Cow and Honestbee!

I love traveling and discovering that there are more vegetarian friendly places all over the world. My favorites are Myanmar and Berlin. The most difficult most prob are Korea and Japan -- but they are also countries with convenience stores and coffee shops in every corner so I am good, mabubuhay ako hehe.

Meatless burger in a veg resto in Myanmar:

My Ate's vs My Plate in a resto in Berlin. Sobrang dami nila mag lagay gulay, and the meat alternative tastes so good!

I love buying fresh fruits in convenience stores abroad, and eating them back in the guest house!

I also found a good influence group aka my Iloilo travel buddies! Sobrang humaling sila ngayon sa juicing, and they share their recipes sa groups namin kaya nakaka hawa talaga! Hello Seph, Marcelo, Brian, and Trice, pahiram muna ng pics a haha!

I bought my ingredients like frozen strawberries, boxes of almond milk, and other fruits and veggies at S&R and Shopwise via Honestbee!

Now that it's 2019, going cruelty-free goes beyond what we eat. It's another transition for me as I become more and more aware that even beauty products like skincare and makeup that I use everyday at home may have animal content or caused harm in production through animal testings. It's another ball game for me that I need to study, decide on, and eventually practice. The intent is there, so I will--like a decade ago--just take things one step at a time.

Special thanks to Honestbee for having me and reinforcing my 2019 goal of a healthier lifestyle even as a practicing vegetarian! You can download honestbee app via Google Play or Apple App Store, and have your groceries and meals delivered straight to your doorstep!

Iloilo Diaries Day 2: Day-Trip To Guimaras + Starting The Year With Unexpected Travels!

I think the best way to utilize Facebook's "On This Day" feature is to see it as a tool in your practice of Gratitude.

This time last year, aside from my solo Korea trip to Jeju and Busan, I also traveled for a blogging assignment to explore Siargao for the first time. This island is definitely one of the most beautiful places I have been to! Yung tipong kahit camera phone lang ang dala ko sa beach ang ganda ganda na ng shots.

In 2017, nag punta naman ako sa Masungi Geo Reserve when I got invited by a fellow blogger for fun (hindi sponsored or event). Wala akong super close sa group, but nag go padin ako! 😀 If you know me and you've seen photos of this adventure park, weakness ko talaga yang hiking and trailing dahil feeling ko malalaglag ako, and magtataka ka talaga bat ako sumabit sa trip na to na hindi naman requirement in life haha. But super naenjoy ko yung challenges, and at the same time, dito nga naman nabubuo ang friendships and memories pag holding on for dear life ka na at kailangan mo ng ka-holding hands HAHA!

Sumama naman ako sa isang biglaang Hong Kong trip noon 2016 with my high school friend and her then-jowa (mag asawa na sila ngayon). Hobby ko lang talaga mag third wheel, lels. At nung 2015, may balikbayan naman sa barkada ko kaya napaaga ang summer nung nag punta kami ng Boracay.

In short, super swerte nga naman ng January at usually I start my year and my birthday month with travels. For 2019, wala talaga akong plans to spend bilang ang dami kong travel plans mid year, when I got invited by Injap Tower Hotel to visit them in Iloilo during Dinagyang Season. Best part is, part ng itinerary ang isang day-trip to Guimaras!!! I only hear about this island but hindi ko sya plinanong puntahan pa just because nasa list ko pa ang Vigan, Batanes, pink beach, and New Boracay. Kaya, parang yung Siargao trip last 2018, sobrang bonus na that I was able to tick another item on my non-bucketlist!!!

About Guimaras

A small island in Western Visayas, Guimaras consists of many islets including Inampulugan, Guiwanon, Panobolon, Natunga, Nadulao, etc. The island is once a sub province of Iloilo until it was made into an independent province in 1992.

Usual side trip ang Guimaras when people go to Bacolod or Iloilo and they want to include a beach day in their itinerary (mga magkakapit bahay lang mga yan). "Today years old" ko nadin nalaman that they call this itinerary as "B.I.G.", in short for Bacolod, Iloilo, Guimaras na usually tinutuhog na sa isang one week trip.

If there are two things that you have to do when you're in Guimaras, it's to go island hopping and to eat mangoes. In just about half a day, I think napagtagumpayan naman namin yang dalawang yan kaya kahit medyo bitin, I am glad I got to experience a bit of this beautiful province.

Ngayon palang, sorry at wala akong input on things to do and budget when it comes to Guimaras huhu. Sabit lang din kasi ako sa tour hehehe. I was able to take a picture though of the island hopping packages where we also availed our tour (via Raymen Beach Resort Corp). For other things to do when in Guimaras, I saw this intensive Guimaras travel blog post which might come in handy (also, for my future reference).

We started the day super early, Iloilo to Guimaras was only about 1-2 hours including na the van ride and boat ride. I think we had 3-4 island stops including a cave, a sea turtle sanctuary, a site for snorkelling and swimming, and an overview deck for sigh-seeing and photo ops. We ended just in time for late lunch in an outdoor set-up of a resort, siguro mga 1pm palang nun. Kung sa Manila yan, magsisimula palang araw ko. 😂

Ang sarap pala ng feeling na wala masyadong tao during our island hopping. Sobrang peaceful. Siguro the most is one small group ang nakaka sabay namin sa isla, but most of the time locals lang ang nakaka salubong namin or yung resident doggo nila. Super clean ng beaches in Guimaras, although useful sana if nadala ko yung aqua shoes ko coz medyo mabato din sya.

Super sarap ng lunch namin! I had the tortang talong (favorite food ko), garlic rice, and sweetest mangoes. One of my favorite meals in this trip!

When we got back to Iloilo, we had a few hours na para mag freshen up sa kanya kanyang room, and then met up again to finally watch the sunset in Injap Tower Hotel's helipad na namiss namin the other night. Ang ganda ng view!

Since Dinagyang week din noon, we also witnessed a nice fireworks display called the Luces In The Sky, a view from the wide windows of our hotel rooms in Injap. Ang comfortable lang! The show lasted for about 15 minutes, and since nasa kanya kanyang kwarto na kami noon, nakaka tawa that we sent our artsy shots nalang sa groups hehehe. May time pa ako umaura sa tagal ng fireworks display!

Iloilo Diaries Day 3: Exploring Iloilo!

$
0
0

In contrast with our Day 1 in Iloilo, full-packed ang aming Day 3. This is also our last full day in the city, kaya talagang sinulit namin ang buong araw and explored all the recommended sites!

Hindi ko sure kung may connect dito, pero ang last na stock knowledge ko about Iloilo is that they call themselves "The City Of Love". ❤

Some souvenirs I got from Iloilo: A festival necklace from Injap Tower Hotel, a native bag from a market in front of Garin Farm's entrance, and a 365 Days of Happiness notebook from Injap.

Self-timer!

Artsy shot pag mag isa ka sa room, haha!

I think nag work naman yung little knowledge ko about the city, sobrang low ang expectations ko when I went there kaya ang daming surprises for me when we toured around. I left the city nang may deeper appreciation for it.

Anyway, listing here the places our group went to on our last full day in the city:

Miag-ao Church

Also known as the Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church, the Miagao Church is located in no other than Miagao, Iloilo! Ang standout sakin while looking at this church is its outside design, sobrang detailed and hindi lang the usual na brick facade! I also learned that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of our country's Baroque Spanish-era churches.

Garin Farm Pilgrimage - Stairway to Heaven ♥️

Since super quick lang naman talaga ang church visits, we had time to spare before our lunch so Brian looked up another site that we can go to. Sobrang swerte, malapit lapit na daw ang Garin Farm na nasa aking Iloilo Bucket List!

Price and Time:

Since quick stop-over lang namin ang Garin Farm, dumirecho na kami kaagad sa (for me) main attraction nya which is the Stairway To Heaven. But now that I am looking at this price list signage na nakapaskil entrance, ang dami pa palang pwedeng activities sa Garin Farm: Pwede mag zipline, horseback riding, scooter, kayak, billiards, etcetera. Ang laki pala nyan!!

This is how the entrance looks like. Maraming signages na nagwawarn na since it's a farm, expect foul odor. You will also see random vegetables hanging from the dome vines na sobrang cool, and from time to time makaka kita ka din ng animals like goats and chickens!

So karipas nga kami since may time limit, so I just took random photos on our way to Stairway To Heaven. Nakaka hingal padin though!

Later on I realized that the whole process of getting to the white world that I've seen so many times on social media made the whole experience more worth it. Again, hindi lang sya photo zone or Instagram destination. You'll go through so much before reaching "heaven"... And isa palang sa challenges yung 456 steps na kailangan mong akyatin!

Kaya pa Seph!? Hehehe! Vlogging while climbing crawling hehehe!

Ayaw ko na sana post to para walang spoilers when you go here yourself, but oh well, hindi nalang ako siguro masyado mag lalagay ng captions!

You will pass through a dark tunnel, and parang swabeng plot twist sa isang pelikula, the end of the tunnel is "Heaven".

Expectation vs Reality though, NAPAKADAMING TAO! Hahaha! Okay lang din, again, hindi naman ito photo zone na kelangan walang tao.

Kaya THANK YOU Marcelo for editing this picture hahaha!

Thank you Lissa, we found a spot na wala talagang tao!

Lunch at Camina Balay na Bato

If I can only recommend one place to eat while in Iloilo, it's at the Camiña Balay Na Bato. Hindi ka lang mabubusog sa pagkain, but also in history. Ang ganda ng ancestral house and ang sarap ng food! I love that they have an intro video that everyone had to watch first before they go up for their buffet lunch.

Every inch of the house was well-preserved and full of story. Kahit gutom na ako, mas inuna ko pa mag ikot at tignan yung mga details like the photos, vase (na galing pa daw Islas De Gigantes!), capiz windows (para daw presko kahit mainit ang panahon), typewriter, sewing machine, plates, etcetera. Mabuti nalang hindi pa uso KonMari noon! 😆

Legit Crazy Rich Asians! Long time ago according to the video we watched, ang mga visitors lang daw na may kaya sa buhay ang pwede maka akyat dito! But of course ngayon very welcoming and open na ang house to guests.

Upstairs is the beautiful buffet set-up! Fun fact, they serve Ilonggo delicacies. Must tries are the molo soup and the tsokolate drink!

Ang daming gulay, thank you!

The best part: Pwede mag request for another round!

More photos before we left:

Last complete group pic before Lissa left for the airport!

Molo Church

Parehas churches ang last two stops namin for the day! Ang interesting detail about these churches is that yung isa panay all-female ang saints na nakahilera sa loob ng simbahan, the other one naman all-male!

Molo Church according to the internet: "Neo-Gothic colonial church, built in 1831, with a white-coral facade & statues of female saints."

Jaro Cathedral

Jaro Cathedral naman yung may all-male saints inside the church, a response to Molo's all-female saints.. May ongoing mass when we entered.

There are two notable features I only saw in this cathedral, first is yung bell tower nya na kailangan mo pang tumawid para mapuntahan. Usually ang bell tower side-by-side ng church, but nagka earthquake daw noon kaya nasira ang church at natira nalang yung tower.

Second distinct feature are the stairs outside the front of the cathedral, na nagbibigay ng parang terrace over the main entrance, and leading to a shrine of Our Lady of the Candles. Marami ang tumitigil dun para mag dasal at mag sindi ng kandila. Dun kami nag stay muna just enjoying the view, the cool air, and each other's company.

Inabutan na kami ng sunset, lending us better view and pictures of Jaro Cathedral and its bell tower.

Dinagyang Floats Parade of Lights

From Jaro Cathedral heading back to our area, sobrang traffic na because of road closures for Dinagyang. May lights parade din daw that night, so expected nadin na hindi na uusad ang mga sasakyan para makadaan ang mga floats. Naka laro at natalo na kami sa Confetti when we all agreed na bumaba na ng van at maglakad nalang! Best decision ever! Yung nadadaanan namin the other days na punong puno ng sasakyan going to our hotel from SM Iloilo, panay tao na ang nakaharang! Ang babaw pero ang sarap sa pakiramdam na nakiki pyesta na kami talaga! ❤

Sinalubong na namin ang Dinagyang Floats Parade of Lights, and ang saya to celebrate with both locals and tourists enjoying all the spectacle and music.

Matapos ang parade, tinuloy na namin ang paglakad till we reached Tatoy’s for dinner.

Ang sarap din ng dinner namin dito! Actually, lahat ng meals namin in Iloilo walang patalo! I had the gising gising, garlic rice, and garlic kang kong.

Tawang tawa padin kami dito ni Trice dahil sa mga kalokohan ng iba nong parade hehehe. (JALEBE! HETE!😂)

Of course, bilang last night na namin huhu, we availed Injap Tower Hotel's Spa Circle. Ang sarap, first time ko to try hot stone massage and sobrang sulit sa lahat ng pagod namin sa pag akyat sa Garin Farm, at lalo na sa ilang buwan ako na hindi nakapag pamasahe! 😄

Iloilo Diaries Day 4: Dinagyang Festival!

$

I have attended a few festivals in my country, The Philippines. After researching about them for this blog post, I really think I should add more to my list!

One of my first free travels as a blogger is for the Panagbenga Festival, Baguio's beautiful flower fiesta. PLDT brought us to the summer capital so we can "live Tweet" during the parade and make their hashtag trend--Uso pa ang trending noon, hehehe! I learned that this festival was created to inspire the city to rise up after the huge earthquake of 1990.

My second festival was the popular Sinulog of Cebu. I went there with Paxie for my birthday week so nag ikot din kami talaga ng Cebu noon. I can't think of another festival that is as most attended in our country as Sinulog! I heard that they are stricter now in holding branded parties for this festival, which I think is for the best since the true meaning of Sinulog became blurry the past years.

I also had a brief Masskara moment in Bacolod for a 2Go event, but it was just a quick stopover since we were on a cruise and had to go back to the boat.

We also have Pintados, Moriones, Pahiyas, Ati-Atihan, Kadayawan, at madami pang iba! The Philippines hold so much festivals that it's hard to keep track how many we have in total. I think it's a cool thing, and again, I hope to experience more of them now that I realized that these events are very meaningful as a Filipino.

A few weeks ago, I went to Iloilo for the Dinagyang Festival, it was my first time. They say that the Dinagyang is the most popular festival that we have, it was even awarded as the Philippines' best tourism event 3x!! I already enjoyed our first three days in Iloilo, but the Dinagyang Festival 2019 Dagyang Dance Tribe Competition is the definitely the meat of this trip!

Borrowed the headdress from Injap Tower Hotel for photo ops, hehehe. Sobrang bigat niya that I had to stand next to the tree para may patungan sha!

Sadly, Seph and Trice got sick that morning so it was just me, Marcelo, Brian, and Bennix who went to the dance tribe competition. I was supposed to wear a dress but changed into a more rugged outfits when I thought of the long walks and crowds like what I experienced from Baguio and Cebu's main festival day, but surprisingly everything went smoothly.

We walked from the end of the road block to our assigned station for the show. On our way, I passed by street vendors selling all sorts of festival props like colorful headgears, necklaces, Dinagyang shirts, and ear cuffs ala Miss Universe Catriona--but with feathers and beads instead of stars.

Since we were early for the show, we walked along the street where the performers were preparing, waiting, or just sleeping. It was an early Sunday morning nga naman! You'll be surprised kung gaano sila kahataw when they were performing though! It's nice when you think about it, that they are giving their all for their group, for the country, and for the Lord!

Why do Filipinos celebrate festivals? They say that these events were ingrained in our country's rich culture and traditions way back even before the Spaniards' arrival. Most of the Philippine festivals are religious celebrations honoring the city's patron saint--usually to express their gratitude for good harvest through parades, novenas, dances, and other shows. These traditions have been passed on from generation to generation. They say that the bigger and more all out you go during these fiestas, the more blessings will overflow back to the community.

Festivals reflect the Filipinos' strong faith and relationship with our family and community.

Sharing photos I snapped during the 3-5 performances we were able to catch. We had our favorite teams, but we all agreed that the non-competing ethnic tribe that performed that morning was very touching and memorable! Other than that, you'll love all the colors and textures from every performer. The huge crowd cheering, the wild costumes and props, the drum beats intense, ang sarap sarap nila panoorin!

Senyor Santo Niño, the root of Dinagyang Festival's thanksgiving celebration:

Sadly, it was also that day when we left for the airport, but not after having our lunch at the very first Mang Inasal! I have to say that I learned so much from this trip. There are tiny tidbits like festival facts and Iloilo's best. But there are also these life upgrades I learned through the people I was with, and a renewed sense of Filipino pride through Dinagyang's colorful festival.

Again, going to Iloilo clueless about the city worked in my favor. I arrived with no expectations, and left with so much memories and stories to tell.

Thank you again and again Injap Tower Hotel for having me! I am glad to have started my 2019 travels in the City of Love and with you guys na sobrang good vibes lang palagi! Bihira na a travel FB messenger group is still active even weeks after the trip--so aside from the experiences, I am most grateful for new friendships because of this. To #365DaysOfHappiness!

Things To Do In Subic With The Family (Or Extended Fam!) +My Thoughts on Solo vs Group Travels

$

Over the weekend, I went to Subic with Ava. It was an unexpected trip not listed on the "goals wall" of my room--a corner filled with colorful sticky notes so I can see my 2019 travel plans. Less than a week till my Japan trip and I have already set my mind na wala munang aalis ng bahay (lol) just so I can hibernate and finish my piling online work. But since I haven't really been to Subic for a real vacation, and Ava's going to be with me, of course nag go nako!

Hello Again, Subic!

I have a few memories with this city around 3 hours away northwest of Manila, but mostly day-trips and I think a wedding in Fontana. I remembered staying in Subic for a night to experience the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Pampanga early the next day. I also stayed in a small Korean hostel so I can attend the 2-day 7107 music festival last 2014 in Clark Freeport Zone. Both epic experiences, both times we ate in different samgyupsal places that Subic is known for.

With this short, overnight trip I realized that Subic has a lot more to offer for quick travels with your family or friends. Tipong you just have a long weekend, or you want to take a leave from work and can only avail an easy getaway... This city is for you! They have a beautiful beach that reminds me of my Sheridan Puerto Princesa beachfront hotel experience from a few years back--but minus the hefty travel price tags you spend on airfares and fancy accommodation!

And with that, sharing here some of the tidbits from last weekend in Subic, and I hope you get something out of it for your next quick vacation away from Manila.

Where To Stay?

Although this vacation is sponsored by ACEA Subic Bay, I am not paid to say these things, and everything you will read here are my thoughts from my personal experience with their hotel / resort.

Why stay in ACEA Subic Bay?

First of all, they offer a nice beachfront for all their guests. You can either enjoy the infinity pool, or go to the beach with the nice view of mountains! Sa totoo lang, if I go here again soon I don't think I will plan anything else aside from lulubusin ko na talaga the amenities and relaxing vibe of ACEA.

Welcome drinks when we arrived:

Second reason why I will recommend ACEA is because they are not yet overcrowded. It's a nice, quiet place to heal and chill. In fact, I think for a hotel that has been here since I think 2016, medyo under the radar sya. People still go to La Union, Batangas, or Zambales (Crystal Beach!) if they want to drive to the nearest beach. By writing this piece, I am revealing a secret and risking the chance of having a peaceful Subic beach getaway, haha! But anyway, I think ACEA deserves more attention.

Here's a room tour:

By the right of the door entrance is the toilet and bath. It has nice hot-cold shower, the usual toilet amenities (soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion), lots of towels and robes, hair dryer, and--of course--a bidet. 😄 Oh, and they have a ledge on the shower area so you can take your sweet time during your bath, haha! Again, kung babalik ako dito sa ACEA I might as well just stay in and enjoy this hotel!

Inside the room: They have a TV, I didn't see a mini fridge, they have two complimentary bottled water, a pot to heat the water, some coffee and tea. They have a lot of sockets for charging the gadgets so yehey. They also have a facial tissue by the desk in front of a vanity mirror (aside from the full length mirror next to the entrance).

Ahhh and the beds! They are soft and huge! Sayang one night lang kami, gumagaling talaga insomnia ko whenever I travel--lalo na when beds are these comfy! I think 2 persons will fit on each bed, sobrang perfect for family or friends.

The third reason is that ACEA has fantastic customer service and family-oriented activities, as Hospitality Innovators, Inc. (HII), one of the country’s premier hospitality management firms, has gone on board as the resort’s new managing partner. HII manages a lot of fantastic properties and resorts in Manila so they have an excellent brand of service and hospitality.

The best welcome chocolate truffle ever, I have to take a pic hehehe!

And finally we reach my final reason why ACEA is recommended: Their room rates starts at around Php 5000+ only according to the Google Maps feature. When I checked the site though, add all the usual taxes and additional fees and total will go to about Php 7,200ish. Not bad for the nice room, great service, amenities, and beachfront. I think asa roughly PHP 7k-10k sila per room. You can check the dates and rates on their webpage.

Things To Do In Subic (2D, 1N)

Again, I haven't had the chance to explore Subic before but this short trip made me want to go back and create like a 5-day itinerary when you're in the area! There's still so much to see and do (including maybe another Korean resto night + a trip to their duty-free!), but if you only have 2 days in Subic, here are the stuff that we were able to fit that made this trip really worthwhile!

1) Zoobic Safari

I've heard about this zoo so many times before, but had no chance to visit till this trip! So thank you!

People who commented on my Instagram said that they've been to Zoobic Safari for field trips when they were still students (ang swerte naman!) so yep a Manila-Zoobic Safari day-trip is possible. But it can also be more practical when you just include this on your itinerary for an overnight in Subic.

Sa entrance palang you'll see boars and doggos just freely walking around the compound!

Since the compound is big, we had to take this tiger themed shuttle for some stations:

What I like about Zoobic Safari:

1) First time to have a close encounter with tigers--several times--in the whole tour! May photo op pa with a white tiger at the entrance. Katacute!!

2) Witty signages, very informative staff. Expect to read zoo pun signs all over the compound such as "PaZOOlubong" or "ZOOvenir" Hahaha! It doesn't end! I also like the guide who went with us for the who tour, ang daming patrivia!

3) Feeding ganaps. You can buy bird or crocodile feeds (not required but fun din) for the ultimate zoo experience. Also for photo or video purposes, haha!

4) Variety of animals you will see! They have deers, ostriches, albino caribou, snakes, eagles, mules, and of course lions and tigers! My favorite part most prob was inside the Tiger Safari where we road a caged truck, and the staff started feeding the tiger in between the railings--just a few inches away from us! Akk!

5) Lastly, I like that they ended the long tour (I think it lasted for about 2-3 hours) with meeting with Subic's earliest settlers: The Aetas. They performed two short tribal dances, and had photo sessions with our group. I like that the Zoobic management did not drove them away, and respected the first inhabitants of Subic.

My favorite parts of the whole Zoobic tour: Tiger Safari and Croco Loco!

Zoobic Safari is about 30 minutes away from ACEA Subic Bay. You can purchase discounted Zoobic Safari tickets online HERE.

2) Inflatable Island

I've been to the Inflatable Island before, but it was only for a short day-trip so I was open to going back. Ava and I decided to just chill at their Bali lounge, and have mango shake. We spent about 3 hours just chilling, taking photos, and watching the others tackling the giant inflatables. I just learned that the whole maze is the size of EIGHT basketball courts nakakaloka! 😂

Anyway, I like that even after a year I saw that they were able to maintain their facilities, and that aside from being an Instagram site, they promoted Inflatable Island to us as a place where you can hold team buildings. They emphasize (during the short orientation) not the photo spots, but that by going through the challenges, you will learn important life values like not giving up, or taking things slowly but surely, or the importance of helping one another to finish the course. I like that!

You can purchase discounted Inflatable Island tickets online HERE.

The next two are other Subic activities that you can also add on your itinerary. We weren't able to go here na, but I saw them while searching Klook for discounted tickets to the first two activities above. Photos used are also from Klook.

3) Ocean Adventure

4) Aqua Planet Waterpark

And lastly, my ultimate game plan in case I find myself again in Subic is to...

5) Just Enjoy Amenities in ACEA Subic Bay!

We had all our meals for this 2-day trip in ACEA's Salt Restaurant, and I like that they are very accommodating in serving me vegetarian alternatives. Food is good, but my favorite is really their truffled chocolates which they served again for our dinner by the beach!

SOLID!

For indoor activities, ACEA has a complete gym facility na slightly natempt ako gamitin if only I have the right pair of footwear with me! Imagine running the treadmill with the view of the beach!

They also have a gaming area for adults, they have darts, billiards, and a KTV section:

Ava and I also went inside the indoor kids playground and sobrang saya coz it is very spacious and colorful, and ang bongga ng slides a! Ava said if andun lang si Asher and Athan they will definitely enjoy this play zone!

And of course, enjoy the private beachfront and infinity pool of ACEA! With a view like this, sayang naman if you just stay indoors!

We went on the beach for our first night, and then the pool the next day before our departure for Manila.

The different shades of ACEA's beautiful sunset by the beach:

Emote emote, hehehe:

Buhay na kami ng kahit kami lang, hahaha! Thanks Ava for keeping up with my dorky side hehehe!

I remember stating here before in my blog that I am all for solo travels. Na mas gugustuhin ko talaga yung mag isa lang ako, hehehe. Aside from the sense of independence, as a person na always nag aadjust for the people I am with para iwas confrontations and lahat happy, traveling alone means I can listen to what I reallyreally want and finally do whatever I please without having to check if my company will be okay with it. It's my ultimate medium of healing, an essential for my whole mental health and self-love shenanigans.

But now I will actually say that I like the balance of solo flights AND group travels. Group travels may mean not always getting what I want, or that I have to adjust and compromise with a lot of people, but it also means learning from them, witnessing my capacity to socialize and enjoy things through the eyes of others, finding out that we all have different irks and quirks (and that's okay!), and of course, deepening old and even new friendships as we explore a new world and new things together. I actually like the thought that I've gained lots of "roomies" in different countries from all the media trips I've participated in, and may kausap ako at katawanan at the end of the day!

My last two local trips (Iloilo and Subic) reminded me about the wonders of traveling with the company of different people with different backgrounds and perspectives. They may be close friends, acquaintances, or family. I am sure I have picked up a thing or two from them, and with that, I am grateful.

Excited for a new trip tomorrow! ❤

Special thanks to ACEA Subic Bay and Monique of Buensalido PR for accommodating me, and Ava Zabat for inviting me!

Althea Korea's New Makeup Products

I've been shopping for Korean skincare and makeup straight from Korea for about 3 years now, thanks to Althea Korea's very convenient app and website. Aside from getting legit products from Korean brands at lower cost, it's nice that Althea is now producing their own affordable and effective skincare and makeup line. What I love about the Althea Exclusives is that I remembered how they started with a survey, listening to what we their consumers really want.

I recently received a box of their newest products as part of the Althea Angels. Not a surprise, I was using some of them in no time. ❤ Sharing a list + my first impressions below.

Of course, let's start with my bare face / no makeup photo! I am not much of a makeup girl, but I do apply a little bit every single time I go out: To protect my skin, to look a little bit made up, and of course, to feel more confident especially with straight brows on, hehe.

PRODUCT #1: Althea Flawless Creamy Concealer

I usually think that Korean base products lack shades that will fit South East Asian skin tones like Filipinos'morena skin, but I was surprised that Althea's Flawless Creamy Concealer (Php 200) comes in four different shades (Vanilla, Ginger, Honey, Mocha). I use the Honey shade to lessen the redness of the corners of my nose and mouth, and to conceal a bit of my veins and dark spots.

I like that it is smooth to apply and blendable, plus the price is also very easy on the pocket!

PRODUCT #2: Althea Eye Palette Sunrise & Moonrise BCL

I am always on the look out for easy-to-wear eye shadow palette and I think I've found one! The Althea Eye Palette Sunrise & Moonrise (Php 1780) is in collaboration with Bunga Citra Lestari, a popular Indonesian singer and actress. The palette contains 8 shades, a mix of mattes, shimmers, and glitters that you can play around with depending on your mood, outfit, or occasion.

What I like about this palette:
1) The variety of finish and wearable shades
2) Highly pigmented that I can easily apply and blend them on my lids
3) Very beginner-friendly

What I do is I apply the matte shade on my whole lid, and then followed by the maroon shade mixed with a bit of the shimmery brown on the outer corners of my eyes. That's it!

(Sorry for my dry lids, I think it's chapping because of my recent exposure to below zero temperature)

PRODUCT #3: Althea Spotlight Eye Glitter

I really wanted to try this late 2018 makeup trend but I can't seem to find one in our local stores! That's why I was ecstatic to see Althea's Spotlight Eye Glitter which comes in two shades (Gold Light and Pink Light) and affordable price (Php 300). It comes with a nice thin wand for easy application, both colors are very pretty, and formula is buttery and hydrating. It gives an extra sparkle to my simple makeup look!

PRODUCT #4: Althea Watercolor Cream Tint

I am more of a lip balm girl, but with the Althea Water Color Cream Tint (Php 260) formulation and four wearable shades--I am now a convert! I love that they are very comfortable on the lips, hindi ko ramdam that I am wearing a lipstick! It gives a nice, natural stain made for someone like me who just wants a bit of lip color--nothing too loud or agaw pansin hehe. It also works if you want to achieve the Korean gradient lips look. I'll make sure to bring one every time I go out.

I think quota nako sa selfies after completing my Althea simple makeup look! Haha!

Also featuring on this post are my new pretty pearl hair clips from @jukaykayatbp. ❤

I like its fresh scent, a mix of floral and fruity, very feminine that's perfect for pre-summer trips. It is also very lightweight, packaging is sturdy making it a go-to scent whenever I travel.

Althea Pore Purifying Serum Cleanser- Php 430

A 2-in-1 product, this Althea Exclusive is both cleanser and serum in one bottle! It cleanses and moisturizes the face, and helps balance its pH level. To use, just massage on damp face, and then rinse with water. Very gentle, and recommended even for sensitive skin.

Althea Petal Velvet Sunaway- Php 480

I never leave the house without applying on my sunscreen. One of the most lightweight and non-sticky facial sun protection I've tried is Althea's Petal Velvet Sunaway. It doesn't give white cast, finish is almost matte, and I like its smell too!

Althea Skin Relief Spot Film Gel - Php 240

Finally, Althea Korea comes up with their own acne conceal and relief product. You can use it to treat acne, and at the same time cover them up before you apply your makeup over! The Skin Relief Spot Film Gel contains effective anti-pimple ingredients like tea tree and Centella. Make sure to keep a tube in your drawer in case of emergency breakout.. This product is genius!

Heading to Hokkaido: Narita or Haneda? + How To Survive Winter Travels Without Spending Too Much!

$

Would you believe, this trip is about 2 months in the making! I received the first email invitation while I was in Japan with my sister Cea around November last year. I felt a little sad that we were a bit too early for snow, and then suddenly I received an email from Japan Airlines inviting me to experience winter in Japan with them!! Napa-iling nalang talaga ako in awe, I will always be amazed with how God works. The timing is perfect, and all His plans and surprises are really the best. This media trip turned out to be one of the most unforgettable I ever had!

For my first blog post, I will try to explain why I prefer JAL's new MNL to Haneda flight, show the inflight meals they serve for vegetarians, and a few tips on how I survived this -10 to -20 trip without spending too much on winter clothes I won't even use back in Manila. It's going to be another loaded post, so enjoy! ❤

HEADING BACK TO HOKKAIDO

When Cea and I went to Hokkaido last year, I had little clue on what flights to book for our supposed winter in Japan escapade. I searched local blogs but ang konti palang, I also asked friends who've already been to Hokkaido. To start the ball rolling, I booked for our round trip Narita flights when I saw a seat sale para sure na sure na ang trip namin. I thought we saved money by booking budget airlines and in advance.

At the last minute, we also booked another airfare from Narita to New Chitose International Airport in Sapporto, Hokkaido since flying is faster than the 8-hour train ride option. Cost of train and plane fares turned out to be almost the same. Yun nga lang, I also have to add extra luggage allowance at the last minute. Ang dami pa palang kelangan iconsider!

The tired travellers after spending the whole day in transit to get to Sapporo:

Now I realized why taking Japan Airlines is practical. It may look pricey at around Php 35,000 all in, but in the end the amount that Cea and I spent late last year for our transportation is almost the same as if we just flew with JAL!

First of all, their free carry-on allowance is within 10 kilos (usually diba 7 lang), and you have an automatic check-in luggage allowance of whopping FORTY KILOS! This is great for winter trips when most of your clothes are heavy coats. Also great for Japan shoppingeras like me, hehehe.

You also get a comfortable seat with enough legroom, a full meal (they even have options for those with food restrictions like me), free drinks (no need to buy an extra cup of coffee or bottled water), pillow and blanket, and individual inflight entertainment that most budget airlines don't provide. Being on a long flight felt comfortable with all these extras. You really get value for your money.

Anyway, let's go back to that night of our flight.....

Our group met at the NAIA Terminal 1 for our flight to Haneda. They started this route (Manila to Haneda) just last February 1. In all my Japan trips, my port of entry is in Narita which is still about 1.5 hours to Tokyo city. Meanwhile, Haneda is only about 37 minutes to Tokyo!

With JAL's new Manila-Haneda daily overnight flights (11:50pm to 4:55am), the first day of your trip won't be wasted in transit.

We stayed in Japan Airlines' Sakura Lounge right next to our boarding gate. We had our first dinner here, and some drinks! They also have wifi and outlets for those who need to work before the flight. Oh, and my friends say that the best curry in Japan is found here at the Sakura Lounge!

I only had tea and a few pastries in preparation for my plane food:

There was an announcement over PA system when our flight was already boarding. Sobrang convenient lang, we went to our plane relaxed and even ready to sleep! I changed into my eye glasses, brushed my teeth, and washed my face at the lounge even before our boarding hehehe.

And then comes our second dinner! 😂 I've requested for a lacto-ovo vegetarian meal, and here's what I got! The lasagna is so so good! What I also love about being a vegetarian during flights is that I get my meal first before everyone else! Ang special ng feeling, hehehe!

Tried to watch Bohemian Rhapsody, but 30 minutes in I decided to catch some sleep since we will have no time to rest the next day upon arrival. It's going to be jam-packed! All passengers have a small pillow and a blanket on their seats, and I brought with me a pair of hotel slippers for a comfortable overnight flight (long-haul flight hack!).

We flew from city....

... To snow.

I woke up and it's already Valentine's Day and I am in Japan! My view from the window seat are mountains covered with snow. The vibe felt so good, nothing can ruin my parade!

During our domestic flight from Haneda to Memanbetsu, we received a pack of Ghana chocolates:

Meanwhile, heading back to Manila, our port of exit is in Narita coming from Tokyo. They also have a Sakura Lounge which is even bigger! We stayed there for a few minutes to freshen up, eat a bit, before checking out the stores for last minute pasalubong shopping. Shaira and I just went to the designer perfumes section to try everything that we fancy, hehe. We also finished up our coins by getting different drinks via the vendo machine.

It is so quiet at the Sakura Lounge in Narita, they even have cubicles if you have to make a phone call.

I just stayed at the main lobby for the drinks and to charge my phone. They also have a free wifi when you stay here. The others went to the second floor to have their last fill of "the best curry in town".

Here's my heading home vegetarian meal from Japan Airlines. The lasagna is better, but this time I had a bottle of red wine.. and red wine makes everything good! Hehe!

I continued watching Bohemian Rhapsody, finished the film, and rewatched a lot of its scenes till the final fasten seatbelts sign turned off. I was listening to the Live Aid We Are The Champions while our plane was descending, watching the beautiful city lights of my warm home.

Finally, I am ending this post with some tips on how I survived winter in Hokkaido without spending a fortune. We all know that coats and winter boots cost about Php 3000 to Php 7000. I decided to make do with what I have, and just bought a few "winter musts".

When going to a below zero trip, I always make sure I have the following:

1) A bonnet to cover my ears (they have heat tech ones in Uniqlo, but normal thick bonnets will do too)

2) Ear muffs for added warmth (effective to and hindi lang pa-cute! I got mine on sale in H&M and also used this last winter 2018)

3) Cloth face mask to cover my nose and mouth when it gets really cold (I was able to use this on my DIY trips since we commute a lot, not so much for this trip since we're always on a tour bus)

4) Gloves because hands really get easily cold (I saw affordable fleece pairs in Decathlon below Php 200 lang)

5) Ultra Warm Heattech top and leggings from Uniqlo. I bought my pair from last year, and still use them for this trip. Dito ka lang mapapa invest since they cost about Php 1300, but sobrang sulit. Again, get the ULTRA Warm, it makes a big difference! They also have a turtleneck variant for the heattech top, which is great if you don't want to wear scarf na (minsan nakakapagod yung madaming sabit sabit hehehe).

6) Heat Packs are the best invention ever for winter trips. I bought a pack in Decathlon (located in Festival Mall Alabang) for only Php 150ish for 10 pieces. You activate the warmth from the pack that looks like a teabag by removing it from its plastic, shaking it, and keeping it on your pocket. Reach for the heat pack every time your hands feel cold!

Maiwan na lahat wag lang ang bonnet, ear muffs, and gloves!

Moreover, you can also:

7) Bring a black fleece infinity scarf that can cover your neck and mouth, extremely helpful for me on that night I left my face mask and earmuffs in our bus and we went straight to the winter ice festival!

8) Coats are expensive, and although super okay talaga yung Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Puffer Jackets, my alternative for this trip is to buy thrifted coats through my friend's Instagram shop @coatsmnl (nakalaba na sya). If you have time, you can go ukay shopping yourself prior your trip! Laking tipid talaga, and you get to wear different coats everyday (haha, sorry kaartehan!).

9) If not thrifted coats, you can shift through H&M and Terranova winter clothes sale! They usually sell these pieces in lower price since wala na bibili masyado satin nito! I got my black teddy bear hoodie from H&M men's section for only Php 800.

10) Pieces you should bring: fleece lined, turtlenecks or jackets that zip up to your neck, hoodies (they add extra warmth to your head!), corduroy, jackets with pockets (to slide your cold hands in), and knits. Again, best first layer is still your pair of heattech top and leggings.

11) Make sure your travel bag is water resistant. Snow can get your stuff wet, and kawawa talaga dito ang leather or cloth bags. I brought a Fjall Raven backpack and a transparent fanny pack with me for this trip.

12) And lastly, my new discovery is another Decathlon find. This store has some of the most affordable winter trip pieces -- mostly dedicated to snowy hikes so you know they'll work well for normal snowy travels.

I bought a shoe spike for only Php 500. It is made of rubber with metal spikes underneath, comes in different sizes (Small to XL) that you can slide snuggly on the soles of your sneakers. You can bring different shoes and just insert these. Sobrang practical, and really effective coz hindi ako nadudulas while wearing them! The only hassle is that I have to remove them every time I enter an establishment kung hindi magagasgas ko flooring nila, hehe!

That's it! I am excited to tell you more of my winter stories on my next posts!

Visit Japan Airlines for your next trip to Japan! Read more about the new Manila to Tokyo Haneda JAL flights HERE.

Thank you so much Japan Airlines and Havas Manila for having me in this media trip! Truly unforgettable as I get to experience MORE of Japan, one of my top favorite countries in the world. Special thanks to Mr. Ogawa, Mika San, Cid and Jookie for taking care of us, and to my new Hokkaido Winter friends for the great company!!!

The Other Side Of Hokkaido That You Should Visit (Note: Not Sapporo or Niseko) | Winter In Japan 2019

$

Our winter in Japan trip was from February 14 to 17. We left the night of the 13th, and slept on the plane (Japan Airlines). It was around midnight when we stepped foot in Japan (Haneda International Airport), took the free airport shuttle to another airport terminal for another plane ride to the underexposed side of Japan. This is my kind of Valentine's! 💖

I really enjoyed this trip! I will recommend it to anyone who wants to experience snow at its finest. Japan really is the KING when it comes to seasons, my best sakura (spring) and autumn trips are both in Japan. I dare say even my best winter trip is this, if not tied with my memories in Korea on my first fully consented solo travel last winter 2018. Iba talaga, parang season on steroids!

So if you're planning to go back to Japan for the snow I suggest that you might as well explore MORE of this beautiful country outside of Tokyo (or even Kyoto and Osaka). When it comes to winter, you HAVE TO be in Hokkaido!

But people only know Hokkaido more for Sapporo or even Niseko. This northernmost prefecture of Japan is also the country's second largest island, meaning marami pa syang sub-prefectures, towns, and cities including Memanbetsu. This district was the main agenda of our trip!

Day 1

• Lake Abashiri
• Hotpot Lunch in Okhotsk Bazaar
• Old train from Abashiri Station to Hama-Koshimizu Station
• Oshin Koshin Falls
• Drift Ice Walking
• Dinner in Namishibuki (Michelin Starred resto)
• Hotel: KIKI Shiretoko Natural Resort

No time to waste, our group opened our luggages and bundled up the moment we arrived at the Memanbetsu Airport. Imagine the ladies taking over the airport's small restroom, changing into our winter clothes, washing our faces and putting on little makeup only to end up covering our cold faces with scarves and face masks, haha!

There is no snow shortage on the first day of our winter trip! We went fishing on this beautiful frozen lake, although Kuya Melo and I more of just took lots of Instagram pics around the area, hehehe!

Our Japanese meals include hearty soup dishes (YAS!), hotpot for lunch and ramen for dinner:

Being part of media trips meant not being able to explore on my own (one of my favorite parts whenever I DIY travel), I am glad we had one activity where we took the train from Abashiri Station for the view of SNOW and iced lakes!

Ang ganda ganda ganda, can't even sit still as I watched the sparkling white lands accented by the clear blue skies as background:

We also had a quick stop for this waterfalls which is said to be one of the most beautiful in Japan. People had to go up for a full view, but the pathways were so slippery that I witnessed so many people slipping and sliding! 😀

I guess the highlight of Day 1 for me is our Drift Ice experience! It's not everyday you get the chance to WALK on frozen lakes! We had to wear this solid waterproof dry suits na even the footwear / boots are connected to the full clothing para walang lusot yung water in case you fall on thin ice! Akk!

My phone died while we were in the middle of ice, so I had little to no documentations of this, but more time to actually feel and see everything around me! I'd say, this is next level HIKING!

Asa dulong dulo kami ng trail nila Jookie and Kuya Ed, haha! Panay tawa lang kami nito! 😁

Witnessed snowfall while we were on our way back to our hotel, right after dinner. Still magical to me!

Another favorite part of this trip is that we all had solo rooms all throughout so we can fully rest after a long day. We never stayed for more than one night in one hotel though, since we have to transfer and explore other parts of Hokkaido. Now that I think of it, parang nag hotel hopping nadin kami!

Each room we slept in has a touch of Japanese aesthetics. Our first hotel (KIKI Shiretoko Natural Resort) is very modern Japan, much like a Muji home with the wood and neutral color palette. I think this is my most favorite from all the hotels we stayed in as, aside from being HUGE, it is also very modern so hindi masyado scary mag isa hehehe.

Enjoying a bar of BLACK ice cream from our kombini run:

We also always have a bath tub in all the rooms we stayed in, which I took advantage of every night to defrost my cold bodeh! Hehe!

Wonderful morning view from my hotel room's window:

Day 2

• Ainu Cultural Experience - Ainu wood carving, nifty stores
• Traditional Ainu lunch
• Snow mobile at the frozen Lake Akan
• Kaiseki (Japanese multi-course meal) for Dinner
• Lake Akan Ice Festival
• Hotel: Hotel Akanko Sou

Day 2 just proves that there is still more to see and do in Japan, especially during the winter. I love the variety of places and immersions we had for this trip, and on our second day, we had a mix of chill and extreme activities!

Our first stop is in this nice cultural village where we learned more about Hokkaido's Ainu indigenous ethnic group (they can also be found in Russia). They are quite different from the Japanese when it comes to their culture and even physique--to me, they add a certain spice to what we've commonly known Japan for.

Sam enjoying the stroll around these Ainu wooden crafts souvenir shops:

We also tried our hands on Ainu traditional wood carving:

Then we went to one of the nifty restaurants for our traditional Ainu lunch. I love the feel of the place upon entering, it was filled with trinkets made of carved wood. The details sparked joy that I had to blurt out "Hindi talaga ako magiging minimalist!"

They have really unique dishes like this pizza, rice with beans, and a mashed sweet potato side dish.

From artsy fartsy and cultural morning, our afternoon was spent on the frozen lake again. This time, we tried our hands on snowmobile! This is another first for me, and for someone who can't even ride a bike--I was so nervous and excited!

But going out there in the open field was really breathtaking, and even peaceful! All I see was my snowmobile, the vast frozen lake, tiny buildings, and the ice covered mountains at a distance. Half wishing I can go for another round!

Dinner was kaiseki style in our hotel's restaurant, it's a Japanese multi-course meal. The OC set-up of a kaiseki still amazes me, sobrang ayos ng pagkaka arrange talaga. I am also very grateful for all the vegetarian alternatives I was served for this whole trip. Never felt deprived, I leave the table full and super satisfied.

Last stop for the day was not required, but we all went for it anyway.

Knowing that we still had a last stop, I left all my cold paraphernalia in our bus (my gloves, face mask, ear muffs), not knowing that our bus left na pala for the day since we can walk from our hotel to the festival! Haha!

Since it's definitely colder at night, I tried to layer with whatever is left in my luggage. I also doubled my coat, and survived the -10 degrees (which felt more of -20 since it's night time and we're on a lake!).

Paulit-ulit nako but this is also a first for me! Ang cool pala ng ice festivals, they make sure there are random winter activities and shows for the guests. Installations were created so people can enjoy the cold night, from slides to sawing blocks of ice to booths that serve cups of hot beverages.

When the first fireworks display boomed, we all separated from each other--running for our own corner by the lake. Shaira, Jay Jay, and I capped the night side by side with the Fuyu-Hana-Bi or winter fireworks. Set aside the boppy background music, I am still moved by how fireworks display makes everything extra special. Add a frozen lake to the picture, and it all seems straight out of Disney!

Late kombini run, strolling (or crawling) through the almost deserted icy streets of our area:

We stayed in solo tatami rooms for the night, which is a traditional Japanese interior design with wide spaces, minimal furnishing, and where you sleep on the floor with just mats. Sobrang cool na cool ako sa room when I first entered it!

I enjoyed my cups of hot matcha tea by the flat chair and table next to the window, watching the spectacular view of the frozen lake where we did the snowmobile and ice festival. It was an unexpected view since we entered our rooms ng nakasara lahat ng wooden windows, then I decided to try and slide them open. It was the sight that really made me say "Thank You Lord!" overwhelmed for being there and receiving all these--wiping the fog from the glass window and maybe a little from the tears embarassingly forming from the corners of my eyes hehehe.

Then I received direct messages on my Instagram stories reminding me of Japanese horror movies I was so fond of when I was younger HAHA, and my imagination just can't stop, won't stop! 😂

In short, I slept in the middle of my tatami room with all my lights on! 😅

Self-timer! Ang saya saya ko pa nyan, hahaha!

The center furnishings were pushed to the sides at night, and were replaced by these mats and sheets:

I tried a mint salt bath (again, a kombini find) that night:

My unexpected view of the sunset from my room. Dito talaga ako napa "Thank You Lord!":

Day 3

• Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary
• Ikeda Wine Tasting
• Ice Village in Hoshino Resort Tomamu
• Buffet dinner in Restaurant Nininupuri
• Hotel: Air Terminal Hotel (New Chitose International Airport)

Ahhh by Day 3 you might think I am already so used to the snow, but this view still distracted me during breakfast:

First stop was in a well-maintained crane sanctuary, Japan's national bird and also happens to be the logo of Japan Airlines! The nice thing about the Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary is that you don't just go there to see the cranes and take photos of them, but they also have an information zone where you learn more about how the Japanese were able to revive these birds after almost being close to extinction more than a decade ago!

They also have a souvenir shop where proceeds go to the crane sanctuary. I can't help but get a piece to show my support for this animal preservation site.

We had our lunch in a wine castle, not literally a castle but it is shaped like one so they eventually dubbed the place as such. This is where we also brought most of our pasalubongs for families and friends (chocolates and wine). Aside from the buffet and free wine taste, most of us also had our soft served ice cream fix here--and I can't emphasize enough how this is a must whenever you're in Hokkaido!

Wine during winter? A+++++!!!!

Wine in Tetrapaks:

Our last stop for the day (aside from dinner and our hotel for the night) was at the Ice Village in Hoshino Resort Tomamu. I cannot pick just one highlight for this winter trip, but this one is a standout just because it exceeded everyone's imaginations!

When I first learned that we're going to an ice village, I was imagining it will be indoors and man-made ala Star City (haha)! But we were brought to a very unique, outdoor, literally frozen village where you enter igloo-shaped structures with cafes, a library, shops, bars, and even an ice hotel!

We visited this minimalist church with wide glass wall on one side, overlooking the snowy world outside--lone white cross standing at the center. I heard some of the girls in the group wanting to hold their wedding here, hehehe!

Entrance to the Ice Village is an arch with "brick" walls literally made of ice!

After a several turns and climbs, we finally had a glimpse of the Ice Village from a bird's view point. If only I have a drone with me, this place looks so magical from above! I remember hearing a faint sentimental background music while we absorbed this view of the igloos, the white birch forest, the sunset, and the feel of our freezing hands that still try so hard to document everything that we can!

We had to take the ice slide to reach the village!

The first igloo is a cafe that sells ice cream and bingsoo! It would have been a nice experience, but we were too overwhelmed to just chill (lols) in one area and soooo.. we just took pictures and hopped to the next ones!

They also have a library with actual books, a fireplace in one corner, and seats, tables and shelves all made of ice! Hello Kuya Ed!

Learned that you can actually rent this ice hotel room and spend a night here!! G ka ba, Jookie? 😄 I wonder where's the nearest toilet though, haha!

The irony of having sunbathing chairs made of ice, and I even saw a small pool nearby (not in pic).

Some of us went to the ice bar for a drink, which they served in ice cups! It is not only in-theme, but also very sustainable and eco-friendly too, hehe!

A store sells these winter clothes, if only I can afford them I needed the extra layer! Hoho!

Here's the Ice Village at night, all lighted up and glowing. It was so hard to leave this giant snow globe.

We had our super heavy buffet dinner in Nininupuri, a restaurant in the middle of Tomamu forest thus this amazing view as we eat one of our best meals. By then I can't help but think that it's already our last night in Japan, huhuhu.

We stayed in an airport hotel, this one is inside New Chitose International Airport in Sapporo. I've been to New Chitose before (with my sister Cea, during Autumn), and never thought they have this!

This is the perfect accommodation since we have an early morning flight to Tokyo the next day. It has a bit of 70s or 80s vintage feel to it, something I might have read from a Haruki Murakami novel.

Nakakapanibago that when I opened the curtains for my usual view inspection, the land wasn't covered with ice anymore--something my eyes had unconsciously been accustomed to the past days. We had a nice view of a JAL aircraft though, and it wasn't as noisy as I thought it would be even though we were sleeping right next to the airport!

I'll probably post our short but sweet Tokyo adventures on my next blog, but for now, I'll end this long post with a few tips (as usual)!

1) Since this is a media tour and everything's already organized for us, I had no chance to figure out how to commute and go about all these locations I've mentioned above (sorry!). I am not even sure if it's possible to visit these sites DIY style or on your own. What I can share is that this trip is organized by JTB Travel & Tours so most prob if you want the same itinerary, you can book through them so they can conveniently arrange everything for you! Here's their website (https://www.jtbphilippines.com/) and also their email (leisure_jtbmnl.ph@jtbap.com) for your inquiries.

2) Best time for Japan winter experience is January to February! Book for a Manila to Haneda overnight flight (Available via Japan Airlines), so you can spend your first full day exploring and not wasted a day in transit.

3) Through slippery roads and frozen fingers, the worst thing you will do when you go on a winter vacation is coming unprepared! For winter travel OOTDs, check out my first post: How To Survive Winter Travels Without Spending Too Much!

If you have other questions I wasn't able to answer in my posts, feel free to comment below or message me on my Twitter or Instagram @anagon. ❤ I will try my very best to answer them, as always, anything travel or Japan or Korea related --- I love to be at your service! 😁

Again, a HUGE thank you to Japan Airlines and Havas Manila for having me in this media trip! Special thanks to Mr. Ogawa, Mika San, Cid and Jookie for taking care of the group, and to my winter buddies for making this a tough winter trip to beat! 💙

Aureo La Union: 5-Star Hotel and Experience in Elyu!

What comes to mind when you hear La Union?

To me, it's always the laidback, back-to-basics accommodations, chill cafes and indie restos where barkadas hangout, and of course one of the most accessible surf spots from Metro Manila!

I had no plans on going to a beach trip soon, but suddenly received an invite to experience Aureo La Union and check out their newest property (condo units). I was expecting the rugged side of LU (or Elyu) that I mentioned above, and although I really love this part of the town, I was still tired from my Japan trip that I almost said no. Good thing Marj has strong convincing powers saying, "Chill lang tayo dun!"Before I knew it, I'm already in a van with fellow social media peeps bracing ourselves for a 4 to 5-hour drive up north!

True enough, we witnessed another side of this popular getaway. It provided a bit more of what I needed as of the moment: A more chill, more private, and more tita or family friendly (hehe) 5-star beach resort where I can truly RELAX.

ABOUT AUREO LA UNION

Aureo La Union is located in San Fernando (LU's capital city), about 30 minutes away from the popular surf spot of San Juan by car. Aureo offers "a world that revolves around you". It's really a place where you can have your me-time.

Go here if you are looking for some quiet time by the beach, and would want first class luxury resort experience. Prior this trip, I was listing stuff I want to do in LU during our free times. But when we checked in Aureo, I wouldn't even want to go out because everything I need is there na!

They have two swimming pools, Aureo Café, the Sunchaser Bar, the Coast Restaurant, and a beachfront. You can also avail water activities via the front desk, like snorkelling, paddle boarding, etc.

Price list of water sports that you can book in the resort:

Some of the meals I had during our 3D2N stay. I am a vegetarian, and received a good variety and generous amount of dishes during our whole stay!

Always love eating with a wonderful view:

My favorite, tofu!

During our first night, we had a grazing table with cheese, dips, crackers, and fruits!

On our last night we had a Mexican themed party!

Our Room

I shared a Superior Room (Lagoon Pool View) with Ava and realized that it's our second beach trip of the year na, akalain mo yun! Haha!

You can choose from Aureo's accommodations, including the Superior Rooms (Garden View or Pool View) and Deluxe Rooms (Beachfront or Lagoon Pool). Each room is for 2 persons but can accommodate up to 4 persons max (with additional fee for the breakfast buffet), and may have two single beds or a King-sized bed. Price per night is about Php 6500 to Php 8000. Learn more about their room rates and see more photos in their website

We have a king size bed, and a couch. Room is very spacious and comfortable. There will be moments when it's too hot outside that I would rather just stay in and enjoy our room!

Here's how our toilet and bath looks like:

We also received some gifts from Beach Hut and Aureo. Ang sarap ng Banana Thins and butterscotch, and the sunblock is much-needed the whole trip! Thank you!

Our room offers a private balcony so we can enjoy the outdoors more--from the view of the sunset, to instant access to the pool. They really designed Aureo with their guests in mind.

The Beach

Of course, we spent all our mornings, and all our sunsets by the beach. Sobrang accessible niya from our room, so I really recommend their Superior Room - Lagoon Pool View! It is also very near the breakfast buffet because #priorities, hehehe.

I never met a sunset I didn't like. ❤

It was hot, but I love the clear blue water and the clean and not overcrowded seaside of Aureo!

#TeamAvail! I can swim all-day!

Sea Park by Aureo

What a dream! You can now own a unit in La Union with Sea Park By Aureo. Designed by Ferenzo Holdings & Development Corporation, Sea Park has fully furnished, well-designed units with dining room, kitchen equipments, bedrooms, air conditioning, internet access, balcony, carpark, 24/7 security, and an access to Aureo's facilities which is just walking distance from the property!

We were able to check out the room on our second day.

They have 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units, all tastefully designed! Very modern feel, I wish I can own one of these limited units! Imagine having a beach trip with your family and friends anytime you want, or even on your own when you just want to drive away from the city for a while!

Wish I can say, "With me roomie, welcome to our unit!" Haha!

With the Aureo crew! Speaking of which....

Aureo Ready??? 😆

Although my goal for this trip is to be as tita as I can be, I can't help but join in the fun every night! Umulan ng shots and 90s music! Hahaha!

The people I was with were young and crazy, kailangan minsan kumeep up! Hahaha! We gained good memories though, and found new friends in people I barely hangout with or just met that day! And as they always say during trips, what happens in Aureo stays in Aureo! 😂😀

Raiza Contawi for President! Hehehe! I love this girl, she's the life of the party and napawish ako to have even half of her hype man skills! ❤ Haha!

Everyone's so game even on our first night! We started with cocktails near the beach, then shots, and then eventually ended up bonding in the swimming pool near our rooms! 😆

With my bessy Ava and my new love, Say Tioco! She's a sweetheart!

With the beautiful girls of Aureo! Thank you for giving us a lovely summer kickoff!

We were forced (haha) to sing onstage during our Mexican night, mabuti nalang kasama ko tong mga to nai-push ang one song number! Hehehe!

Vina after our prod lol: "Kalimutan nalang natin lahat na nangyari to!" Hahaha! She was hilarious during the whole trip!

Another fam trip done! Sobrang memorable ng group nato, hehehehe! 😁

Upon researching, I learned that the name Aureo was actually derived from the latin word ORO which simply means GOLD. This just compliments the 400-meter stretch of golden beach we were lucky to have during the whole trip, from sun up to sundown. The sunsets we witnessed here were also golden, but I guess what shined even more are the great service, the beautiful amenities, and the friendships formed while we were in Aureo. ❤

Thank you so much for having me, Aureo! You were golden!!! 💛

Supplement Myths Busted!

$
0
0

I just turned 33 last January, and I've never felt this busy in my life! I have a lot of things going on since 2019 started, so I make sure to check in on my health from time to time just because getting sick is the last thing I want to happen right now!

One of the things that I do aside from drinking lots of water everyday and staying away from vices like smoking and drinking is adding nutritional supplements to my diet.

I heard a lot of the myths involving supplements, and tried reading up on them so I know that I am all good.

Here are some interesting myths about some of the daily supplements that I take daily:

1) Best source of Vitamin C is Citrus

We all assume that the best source of Vitamin C is eating oranges or kalamansi, but it turns out bell pepper has the highest amount of Vitamin C! Other good Vitamin C sources include broccoli, papaya, strawberries, and sprouts.

2) You just pee the excess Vitamin C

They say that excess Vitamin C intake is not bad, your kidneys just eliminate the excess through your urine. This doesn't mean though that you can just consume big doses of Vitamin C everyday without any side effects. You may experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and kidney stones, so be careful and just take you vitamins in recommended dosage.

3) Glutathione is for Skin Whitening

Although its true that gluta lightens the skin, it is just a side-effect of its primary use which is to detoxify the liver and strengthen the immune system!

Here are some of the other health benefits we get from Glutathione:

 - Increases Energy

- Improves Focus

- Detoxifies Liver and Cells

- Improves Quality of Sleep

- Strengthens Immune System

-Reduces Impact of Illness (such as liver problem, cataract, skin problems, etc)

- Antioxidant

- Anti-Hangover

- Improves Skin Health and Appearance

4) We Need To Take Glutathione!

Did you know that Glutathione is a substance that is already in our bodies? It is a substance produced by the liver, and not a whitening chemical in beauty products!

But why do we have to take Gluta supplements if we already have it in our body? It's because we lose Glutathione in our bodies due to stress, pollution, aging, when we don't eat right, and when we have vices like tobacco or alcohol.

5) All Glutathione Supplements Are The Same

While other brands use non-reduced glutathione, which may give little to no benefits, Snow Caps contain L-Glutathione or “Reduced Glutathione” which our body easily absorbs. If you're interested in taking this kind of supplement, make sure to get a brand that promotes L-Glutathione (not just glutathione) to ensure effectivity of what you pay for since they are usually a bit expensive!

Snow Caps Premium contains 500mg of premium L-Glutathione per capsule, plus Alpha Lipolic Acid (100mg) and Vit C (100mg). Best to take one capsule every morning when glutathione levels are at its lowest and oxidative stress at its highest. Price is P1,475 for 1 box with 30 capsules, and readily available at all leading drugstores nationwide.

Do you also take supplements daily? What do you recommend?

Spring in Korea: Clothing Essentials to Bring

$

Are you headed to South Korea sometime in the spring? As you may have read from a previous feature here on Anagon’s Blog, winter season falls between December to February, which means that spring will be in full swing in the months to follow.

(image: Unsplash)

If you visit from March to May, you can bless your feed with a sea of cherry blossoms — yes, sakura trees are not just found in Japan. There are actually a few sites to view them from Jeju Island to Busan to Seoul. The temperatures during this season are also not too hot and not too cold.

If you’re someone who hails from the tropics and has no idea what spring fashion is like, check out this list of essentials.

Basic Tees

(image: Unsplash)

Never go anywhere without packing your basic tees. Spring is a transitional season between winter and summer so the weather falls somewhere in between. The secret is to master the art of layering, starting off with your base layer which are your basic tops (aside from your underwear, of course).

When you layer clothes, style expert Gayle Spannaus recommends choosing a color palette to bring the look together. If your first layer is something neutral, everything else that goes on top of it should be of the same color family. To break the monotony, don’t be afraid to play with textures, patterns, and even proportions. The best thing about layering is that it allows you to adjust your outfit to fluctuating temperatures, which will definitely happen during the spring.

Scarf, Gloves, Beanie

(image: Unsplash)

While afternoons are generally sunny in spring, there’s something called ‘spring colds’ which happen in Korea. It’s accompanied by strong winds and temperature drops and suddenly, it feels like winter again. This trio of your chic scarf, gloves, and beanie is a godsend for those chilly mornings and evenings.

  Jacket

(image: Pexels)

Utility, leather, denim — anything goes in fashionable Korea. Don’t leave your hotel without your jacket on your back. Not only is it an effective outerwear against cold blasts of air, it can be very stylish, too!

Spring Dress

(image: Unsplash)

You can get away with wearing a dress by putting a jacket on top. According to The Independent, a floral dress paired with a leather jacket gives an interesting balance between looking too feminine or too tough. Try it with denim or other fabrics, too. That’s also a great way to stand out from the crowd since Korean fashion tends to be on the girly side, although there’s nothing wrong with that. A maxi dress can be a girl’s best friend during spring since it has more protection from the cold. If you’re a little on the short side because of our Asian genes, Pretty Me suggests sporting a maxi dress with a slit that will give the appearance of length. Your legs might be a little bit more exposed but pair it with boots and some tights and you’ll be good to go!

Jeans

(image: Unsplash)

Unlike winter, you can do with a single layer of bottoms. Normal denim jeans will do the trick. If you’re wearing something a little bit light, like a pair of culottes, consider wearing some tights underneath.

Sneakers

(image: Pexels)

While there won’t be any snow this time of year, sneakers or a nice pair of boots are your best protection. Flats can get uncomfortable after a few hours of walking so it’s best to wear something with good cushioning. It will also be a good time to up your shoe game!

One last bit of advice — remember to plan your outfits accordingly so that they don’t clash with the color of the delicate pink flowers!

On Real Love and #TouchOfCare

I haven't found the time to go to the cinemas lately, so I just recently watched Bohemian Rhapsody during my flight to and from Japan with JAL. Weeks passed and I am still affected by it in so many ways, have you seen it? Aside from regretting not having to watch the band Queen live in this lifetime, I also witnessed love stories in different forms.

First is Mary Austin splitting up with Freddie Mercury after he admitted being bisexual and getting involved with another guy. I remembered she said something in the movie that she can't even blame him because it is not Freddie's fault (the he is bisexual). They remained friends even when they chose to live separate lives. In fact, Freddie believes that Mary is the only person he truly trusts.

"All my lovers asked me why they couldn't replace Mary, but it's simply impossible. The only friend I've got is Mary, and I don't want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage. We believe in each other, that's enough for me."

Another tug in the heart is Jim Hutton, Freddie's partner till death, who stood by him even after finding out that the Queen vocalist has AIDS.

Mercury said he'd understand if Jim leaves, in real life he replied, "I love you, Freddie, I'm not going anywhere."

Real-life Mary and Freddie:

Jim Hutton and Freddie Mercury:

Grabe talaga ang love noh? The things you do that you don't realize you are capable of doing. Our hearts expand, and we have HUGE capacity to take in anything! I recently watched the new video of Vicks Philippines.

This is about the unconditional love of Agnes over a child she adopted, who turned out to have HIV. She still cared for the baby, even taking in the painful words she heard from her neighbors. To Agnes, it's not the baby's fault. Everyone deserves love and #TouchOfCare which she provided to her son.

Sobrang laki ng impact sa akin ng video nito, we all know the social stigma when it comes to HIV. But what can a child do when he is born with it? It's not his fault, but the consequences are heavy. I think it's the first time a brand shed light to HIV on children.

I think just like Agnes, we all have our own unconditional and transformative love stories, moments when we give #TouchOfCare to show the people we love what's truly in our hearts.

It's a bit personal, but one of the hardest trials I ever had to go through in life was being there for someone I love who was gravely sick, but I have to show through my words and facial expression that I was positive that things were going to be okay. My heart was bursting, but I had to show up and make the person feel that nothing was wrong, everything's fine.

Since then, my heart knows what it wants: A healthy life for the people I love. This is my happiness, to have more days I can be with them, hug them, and show them my love and #TouchOfCare.

Some of the people I truly care for, my blog and high school friends, my fur baby Keeks, and my family:

Do you have #TouchOfCare stories, or thoughts on this new Vicks campaign? You can watch the full video here.

Have you ever joined an official Kpop fan group?

Honestly, I never thought I'll come this far, haha, but just for the Korean boy group Astro, I found myself paying to enter an official fan club late last year. And like all Kpop groups, the boy band has a nickname for their fans. I can officially call myself an Aroha for the whole 2019!

I know I know, at 33 other may see that I am kind of old for these things, but when you think about it, ngayon ko lang talaga maeenjoy fully these kinds of things more than ever as I have the time and resources to become a fan girl.

Naisip ko talaga buti nalang talaga ngayon ako nahumaling sa Korean world dahil magastos sya talaga--think of all the official and non-official merch, membership fees, fan meetings and concert tickets, Korea trips, skincare and makeup, physical albums, light sticks, and all the other pizzazz that goes hand-in-hand for every Kdrama and Kpop group! Napakadaming investments, lol! Buti nalang talaga ngayon lang ako nahilig sa ganito, ngayong kumikita nako on my own! 😁

Anyway, sharing here the box that they sent to me as part of the Aroha 3rd Gen Membership. I applied for this late last year through Astro United Philippines (Philippines based fanclub), and for a minimal fee they were able to send my payment and information to the site (medyo mahirap / complicated din kasi intindihin on my own).

The box is so cute and travel-themed!

I think they only open the official membership once a year, usually before the year ends. All the members get a box filled with well-curated official Astro merch, and a membership card with your name on it! I will still figure out the other perks of being part of this club.

I received this box straight to my doorstep via DHL. Aside from the Php 2550 actual fee + service fee I paid Astro United Philippines, I still paid the courier Php 750 earlier for "customs storage fee". Hindi ko nagets kung ano yun, hehehe. Pero sa excitement to finally get the package I applied for last year November 2018 (halos 4 months nadin pala), binayaran ko nalang agad!

What's inside the Astro's 3rd Gen Aroha Membership Box:

A grid notepad and ASTRO + AROHA pen I'll bring daily for my notes:

Since it's travel-themed, I also received a cute holographic passport holder to replace my bulky one:

I got the Jin Jin bracelet, with ASTRO + AROHA engraved at the back of the pendant:

Three different themed photo cards! I used to buy Eunwoo official cards from their albums ng tingi tingi from online resellers for about Php 350 each!! Dito palang sulit na bayad ko hehehe.

A pack of Astro stickers. Still deciding whether I'll use them!

Astro members' photos with their letters at the back:

Astro Passport (notepad with all Astro members' passport profiles on the first pages)

Astro's profiles:

It also has a "Ticket" (like a plane ticket) and a card with Astro's HD ID pictures:

And of course, a photo book! I love that Kpop groups really put so much effort in their official merch like their albums, photo books, membership box--tipong may Spotify naman pero bibili at bibili ka padin ng album nila dahil ang ganda!

Btw, Astro meant star in Spanish, and the group was named that so they can be stars to those who love them. ❤ Even with the steep price, I am super satisfied with the Astro 3rd Gen Aroha Membership box! Care to share if you are also a Kpop fan club member, and what group ka super "invested" na? 😊 Also, do I have fellow Arohas (official and unofficial) reading my blogs too?

Park Ji Hoon In Manila | Press Conference + Fan Meeting!

Last week was a great week for Hallyu fans as we had back-to-back Kpop and Kdrama events with Pulp Live World!

First up was former Wanna One member Park Ji Hoon's First Edition Asian Fan Meeting Tour last March 15, 2019 at the Araneta Coliseum. Filipino Mays filled the venue as Wink Boy entertained his fans with explosive song and dance numbers, games, and fan interactions. He is really adorable IRL!

First meet up with the K idol is an up close and intimate press conference for all the media partners. In both events, Kring Kim hosted the shows very well. As the Twitterverse puts it, Kring Kim is the fan girl who just so happens is also good in hosting! I really love her wit and how she made not only the fans but also the artist happy.

You can watch my full press conference interview video with Ji Hoon below.

That night, we all went to the Araneta Coliseum for the fan meeting. What I enjoyed most about this show are:

1) The way Ji Hoon dances! He is so good in his craft, nakaka loka! Sobrang talented!

2) The way Ji Hoon interacts with his fans! He is so charming, and always knows the right words to say that we all can't help but swoon!

3) The fan service! First time I attended a fan meeting where the artist a) Made an extra ecobag art even though in the script isa lang naman gagawin nya just so he can give more fans a gift! And b) First fan meeting I attended where the artist went around the WHOLE venue so even the team upper box peeps can see him up close!

Thank you Ava for joining me!

What a performer!

I also like that he always looks back on his Wanna One days and his brothers through the interviews and his performances (he gave his solo renditions of Elever, I Wanna Have, and Hide And Seek). You know that they will always have each others' backs. Meanwhile, Ji Hoon also showed us that he can shine on his own with Young 20, his first offering as a solo artist.

I wish you all the best Ji Hoon on your solo career! I can't wait to see more of your music and moves when you release your new album on March 26 of this year. Fighting!

And finally, sharing with you my video coverage of these two Park Ji Hoon in Manila events. A big thank you to Pulp Live World and Ms. Happee Sy for making this happen, and for having me!

So Ji Sub in Manila Fan Meeting

I really started my Korean pop culture journey with Kdramas. According to the notes on my phone where I jot every show I've watched since 2016, Oh My Venus is the third series I finished.

To be honest, I am leaning more on the baby boys (V, Nam Joo Hyuk, Park Hyung Sik) than the 30-something "ahjussis" (Gong Yoo, Lee Dong Wook, Song Joong Ki, and So Ji Sub), but I think I'll eat what I just said this month after watching Lee Dong Wook's Touch Your Heart and So Ji Sub's this fan meeting!

So Ji Sub is super gwapo in real life, super manly, and super talented!

Here are some favorite moments during his Asia Tour “Hello” Manila fan meeting held at the New Frontier Theater last March 16:

1) So Ji Sub opened his show with an English show Can't Smile Without You--what an entrance! Yun palang medyo nateteary eyed ako?! Hahaha!

2) So Ji Sub gave pieces of advice to random lucky fans, and his words are very insightful!

3) So Ji Sub seems shy, but he was super G with the funny dares during his show: from wearing angel wings to floral crowns, to sending lots of Korean hearts to the screaming crowd even if he feels awkward for not doing this for so long!

4) So Ji Sub's fan meeting isn't the usual! I thought I've seen enough Korean actor meet and greets, but his was on another level: the second half of the show was his concert! Who would have known So Ji Sub is a great rapper, he has swag!

My favorite was when he sang Ikon's Love Scenario, what a moment!

And of course, 5) I also have to add the host of the show, Kring Kim, to my favorites during the fan meeting! Her wit and antics made not only us the fans in the audience entertained, but I even saw So Ji Sub laugh because of her! Benta siya!

Sharing photos I took during So Ji Sub in Manila!

"As I’m ending the tour, I think that this moment when I’m with my fans is the happiest. I know when I go back (to Korea), all these feelings will come rushing to me"

Thank you So Ji Sub oppa for making Manila the finale of your tour! I hope we gave you great memories, and more power to your beautiful career!

Special thanks to Pulp Live World and Happee Hour for bringing our K idols here in Manila!

Taal Vista Hotel: A Little Tour Of This Classic Tagaytay Accommodation!

I found myself back in Tagaytay last week with other travel bloggers and writers so we can experience Taal Vista Hotel--to me, the classic accommodation in this city. I was so excited to relax and maybe find photo and writing inspiration from the change of scenery.

I am lucky that I live only about 1-1.5 hours away from Tagaytay, but guilty that I still haven't done a lot of the must-dos when in the area. My family tends to just go for the usual Antonio's or Bag of Beans for birthdays or some long weekends, but I realized that there's still so much to see and do (and eat!) in this city in Cavite.

To name a few:

1) Hike the Taal Volcano
2) People's Park In The Sky
3) Paradizoo
4) Ilog Maria Honeybee Farm
5) Tagaytay Picnic Grover

And of course, to actually stay in a nice hotel and spend a night in this popular holiday town south of Manila. Since summer is here, and I am sure a lot of you are already planning to go somewhere relaxing and a bit cooler and less crowded than Metro Manila. A Taal Vista Hotel staycation is the way to go!

We had a private van to transport us from MOA to Taal Vista, but for commuters, just go to LRT Gil Puyat Station (Buendia) for the bus terminal. There are DLTB and Jam Transit buses heading to Nasugbu, Balayan or Lemery that will pass by Tagaytay.

When we arrived at the hotel, it's just in time for lunch! We first toured around and then checked out Taal Vista's 196 sqm, beautiful Tagaytay Suite--I think their biggest and best room here! We had fancy pineapple juice with bamboo straws, while enjoying the room's panoramic view of the Taal Volcano. See more of Taal Vista Hotel rooms HERE.

Lunch at the Veranda

First order of business: FOOD! Taal Vista's Veranda offered us a wide selection of international and local cuisine served buffet style, but they also have ala carte options. It was perfect because by that time my tummy was already growling. We also had our breakfast here the next day.

Aside from the variety of selections, they also have cultural presentations on the side including per table harana, live music and sometimes even dancing! I like the touch of Pinoy because of the songs, I imagine bringing balikbayans families or friends here on their vacation.

What I love most about the Veranda is their beautiful and maaliwalas interiors. It looks very modern yet homey and inviting--much like visiting a kamaganak's home for a good meal! Oh, and they also serve Filipino kakanin like kutsinta and sapin-sapin, my ultimate weakness. 😁

My Room: Taal Vista Hotel's Deluxe Mountain Wing

Room tour! The most impressive from our whole stay in Taal Vista is most prob the view. Imagine waking up to the sight of nature and cool breeze when you open your window just a little bit. I can definitely get used to this!

Since our Deluxe room is on a higher floor, we had a better view of the ridges. Learned that the rooms on our side are also newly renovated and furnished, A++ for keeping an 80-year-old hotel well-maintained!

Upon entering the door, on the right side is the toilet and bath, complete with all the essentials: different towels, toiletries, hand-held and rain shower, hair dryer, and of course a bidet.

On my left from the entrance is the closet area, housing several hangers, a flat iron and board, safety deposit box, laundry bag, and hotel slippers.

Single king sized bed, comfy duvet and fluffy pillows that made it harder to get up from nap!

Where I worked during our break. I seldom bring my laptop during trips, but the workload is slowly piling up. Thank God for fast internet and Taal Vista's comfortable room that made me more focused on my work.

Below the desk is the closet housing the complimentary bottle water, water heater, packs of coffee and tea, and an empty mini fridge:

They say that when you're inside your room in Taal Vista, it's so hard to go out na because you already have the view in the comforts of a private space. You can just call for room service in case you get hungry:

Hallway of our rooms is also very maaliwalas. It has clear glass windows overviewing the property. Buti G si Mikyle to take my photo on the zigzagging road! Joke ko lang dapat yun e ("Picturean mo ko nandoon ako sa malayo!"), but the result is nice! 😁

We weren't able to use the pool, but maybe on my next visit:

Taal Volcano and Taal Lake Viewing Deck

It was right before sunset when the group huddled again. We checked out the viewing deck for the Taal Volcano and Taal Lake, took photos, and planned to avail their Fun Family Picnic but sayang we missed the cut-off time sa tagal namin mag photo op haha! 😅

It's okay, though. I really had a nice time at the Veranda fireplace, chatting with new and old friends with wine and picas, purplish pink sunset of Tagaytay as our backdrop. We really do have the best sunsets!

Sky Ranch amusement park is literally just next to Taal Vista! Another activity in case you visit Taal Vista Hotel for 2-3 days.

Dinner at Taza Fresh Table

Taza, or fresh in Arabic, is true to its name as they served us garden-fresh local and international dishes, with the best locally sourced ingredients. I know, all we did while we're in Taal Vista was eat and eat! But just when I thought I'll say no to another dish, I cannot resist the new plate served right in front of us--especially since they were very mindful when they learned about my food restrictions! Thank you for the great service, Taal Vista!

Cocktails and Live Band at the Lobby Lounge

Ended the night with music and beer at the hotel's Lobby Lounge, a Tudor-designed rooftop with a nice view of Tagaytay during the day. You can just chill here while waiting for friends or family. They serve appetizers, desserts, and wide selection of beverages.

Right before dinner, we were asked who still wants to have a nightcap at the lobby lounge. I was guilty of saying "Tita nako, aakyat nako to rest", but then found myself one of the last ones to go back to our rooms HAHA! It was the perfect venue to try local brew Engkanto, and catch up with my college friend Jen who is now with Pico De Loro.

Nakaka relax after a long day of in-transit, work mode, and all-out eating! Ahh, the magic of Tagaytay! Thank you Taal Vista Hotel, Sir Michael, and Kuya Melo of https://outoftownblog.com for having me!

Taal Heritage Tour + Things To Do In Taal Batangas

$

My dad is from Batangas, or a "Tubong Batangueño".

Back in the day, he will drive the whole family to his hometown in Tanauan almost every weekend to visit his mom and siblings, and maybe even his childhood friends. Seeing the Makiling at a distance as we pass by Batangas municipalities was a feel good core memory to me as a kid--which is still clear to me up to this day. Maybe it's because of dad's stories of adventures related to this dormant volcano during his teen years. I've always looked at Mt. Makiling with curious eyes!

And although we weren't really able to explore more of Batangas outside Tanauan, it's nice that my work now entailed me to experience and discover things that I never really had the chance to do so about my dad's home. Let's start with Taal, and hopefully there is more to come in the coming months!

Our day 2 for this trip is dedicated to Taal Heritage Tour. It will take more than an hour drive coming from Taal Vista Hotel, and another 1+ hours to reach our next hotel for this trip which is Pico De Loro. Some might say it's time consuming, but personally I enjoyed this itinerary! Sharing the lineup of activities we had for our full day in Taal.

Batangas' Balisong Culture

I just learned now that Taal is the Balisong Capital of the Philippines!

We visited Barangay Balisong to check out one of its famous shops by the road called Ona’s Batangas Blades Store. The owner himself, Mr. Diosdado Ona, was there to entertain us with our questions. He even did a quick kick-ass demo, sliding this deadly weapon to open and close with just one hand (like a ninja)!

I only learned now that balisong literally means "Broken Horn", to break (bali) and horn (sung), as these knives have handles made of animal horns. When you check out the shop, you'll see different varieties now from materials used to sizes, and even assorted blade shapes. The craftsmanship is superb, very impressed that I just have to get one to take home to my dad.

Basilica of Saint Martin of Tours

Also known as the Taal Basilica, the Basilica of Saint Martin of Tours is the biggest church in Asia standing 88.6 meters long and 48 meters wide! This basilica went through several renovations after damages cause by twin earthquakes in 2017. And because of the grand architecture and maybe its long aisle, the basilica is also popular wedding venue and location for movie/TV shoot!

I have a thing for vintage floorings:

I can imagine the priests from yesteryears holding their sermon here:

Taal Squad! Haha! Enjoyed this trip because of them: Mikyle, Victor, and Kuya Melo.

Museo nina Marcela Mariño at Felipe Agoncillo

This is where the first Philippine flag was created! Marcela sewed our flag using silk cloth for 5 days in May 1898. She was helped by Lorenza (her daugther) and Delfina (Rizal's niece), before delivering the flag to Emilio Aguinaldo. The Philippine flag was first unfurled in Cavite City to celebrate the victory of the revolutionary army against the Spaniards.

The house is now converted into a museum where you can enter preserved rooms, check out the details of antiques and artifacts, and see old portraits of the family free of charge. It is history class outside the four walls of a classroom!

Lunch in Paradores del Castillo

When you search Taal on the internet, one of the recommended accommodations is the Paradores Del Castillo. If you find old houses fascinating than scary (hehe) then most prob a stay in this restored 19th century residence will be a nice experience.

But if you're also a scaredy cat like me hehe (although the rooms are modern already), Paradores del Castillo also has an alfresco restaurant where you can dine and enjoy Filipino dishes, and then stroll around the house and their garden.

Villavicencio Wedding Gift House

This ancestral house is called the Wedding Gift House (or Casa Regalo de Boda) because it is literally the wedding gift of Don Eulalio Villavicencio to his wife Doña Gliceria Marella y Legaspi. An interesting tidbit about this couple is that they fully supported the revolution, including the financing of Jose Rizal's novels and allowing Andres Bonifacio to hold Katipunan meetings in this house!!

As our last stop for the Taal Heritage Tour, we had suman at tsokolate at the Wedding Gift House's dining area. The suman dipped in chocolate is divine, as my eyes browsed through the intricate details of every corner of every room in this house. The variety of colors and patterns used was a sign of wealth during its time. With so many stories, this place is a must-visit for me and a perfect ender for our Taal Heritage Tour.

Pico De Loro + Pico Sands Hotel: Found An Almost Paradise Resort in Batangas

After a night in Taal Vista Hotel and doing a Taal Heritage Tour, we ended our Summer In The South trip with a stay in Pico De Loro's Pico Sands Hotel!!

I've known of Pico De Loro Beach & Country Club for the longest time, but only as a members only resort. Through this trip, I discovered that inside this 40-hectare "Residential Resort Village" is Pico Sands Hotel where even non-members can stay and enjoy some of Pico De Loro's facilities.

Pico De Loro Beach & Country Club is the first development in the "Premier Sustainable Coastal Resort Town" of Hamilo Coast. The property is divided into three, namely:

1) Beach Club - a beachfront recreational facility that is exclusive to members and their guests. They have daybeds, infinity pool, bars and cafes.

2) Country Club - where members and guests can enjoy various indoor and outdoor recreational and sports facilities.

3) Residences - 9 buildings of low-impact residential condominiums surround a four-hectare saltwater lagoon.

Welcome To Pico Sands Hotel!

The group stayed in our individual rooms at the Pico Sands Hotel. They have 154 rooms in total, very spacious and modern, with a beautiful view of mountains and lagoon. It is a perfect place to have a relaxing vacation!

When we checked in, they strapped our wrists for security measures. They change the strap color daily, to ensure that everyone roaming around the resort are their guests.

You'll find the Pico Bar and the Pico Restaurant at the ground floor of Pico Sands Hotel, just across the lobby and reception area. I also saw a small store that sells beach and summer essentials at the lobby. Anyway, we had our breakfast buffet in this area, as well as mid-day merienda and even cocktails at night. Check out the other Pico Sands Hotel dining options here.

My Room At Pico Sands Hotel

Since we came from a tour, I was so excited to go to my room to rest up a bit and freshen up before our sunset cocktails and dinner.

Heading up, I learned that Pico Sands Hotel now promotes sustainability by placing water refilling station in all floors of their hotel.

They also provide a glass pitcher in all the rooms, at the mini bar. I remember staying in a hotel in Korea where they also have water stations in every floor (instead of the usual 2 small complimentary bottled water), which is not only super convenient and saves me money from buying water outside, but also very earth-friendly since we don't have to consume single-use plastic daily! I hope more resorts and hotels will follow.

I've seen different rooms of hotels and resorts in my traveling life, but still, opening a door to my next accommodation still excites me!

My reaction to the Corner Deluxe Room in Pico Sands Hotel was nothing short of awe! It is very spacious, well-designed, and I just love the view from two sides of the room! Sobrang maaliwalas! I suddenly missed my family, and was hoping I can share this experience to them!

Let's head in:

The toilet and bath has everything you'll need from fresh towels to toiletries.

The room is very spacious, good for 2 adults and 2 kids. It has one king-sized bed, a closet, a work desk area, and a flatscreen TV. Price per night is about Php 11,800 inclusive of taxes and fees.

Everything's kept clean and organized, during the whole stay it felt as if I was in one of those newly built resorts, but Pico Sands Hotel has been around for years!

I was also amazed that I got a corner room, I also have two balconies extending on both sides!!

The view of the lagoon from my balcony is a big bonus, I really wish I can stay here longer just to take in everything, but time flew fast and we had to meet up again with the group at the lobby for our sunset cocktails by the beach.

We arrived at the beach just in time for sunset (via the resort's free shuttle, but you can also walk if you have the time and want a little exercise / sight seeing).

Pico De Loro is a private resort, and you can really feel the perks just by going to the beach area. Minimal crowd, very quiet, you can fully enjoy the sunset right in front of you. It was very calm, almost as if you have the whole beach to yourself!

Cheers to beautiful experiences!

Where we had our sangria and cheese, my weakness:

And then our dinner and post-dinner drinks:

Food tastes 3x better by the beach:

Rain The Spa

After our dinner, Bettina and I went to Rain Spa, Pico De Loro's oasis for wellness and pampering. They offer traditional and progressive therapeutic services for residents and guests. Bettina and I got a 30-minute massage, and the room is massive! I love that it has a tub and its own sauna!!

Things To Do In Pico De Loro

Needless to say, we had quality sleep while in Pico Sands Hotel. When my alarm went off the next morning, I wasn't sure if I want to get up or just extend my sleep!! Hehe!

But since it's our last hours in the resort, it's time to maximize our time with some outdoor activities you can organize with the help of Pico De Loro.

Some of the things that you can do when in Pico De Loro:

1) SWIM! They have several pools and the beach for you to enjoy. They can also provide paddle boards, kayaks, and jet ski if you want to try water sports.

2) PLAY! They have indoor courts for basketball, squash, and badminton, and facilities for bowling, billiards, karaoke, and even video gaming!

3) REFLECT! Aside from strolling around the vast property or beachfront, Pico also has a beautiful church on top of a hill called the St. Therese of the Child Jesus Chapel.

4) RIDE! You can either ride a bike or ride a pony while in Pico De Loro, up to you!

5) JOIN TOURS! You can book several tours with Pico Sands Hotel, including dives, mangrove tour, or short hikes. You can check out the offerings and the price list here.

Since we only have a few hours left, we conquered two activities before we headed back to Manila.

First was a 45-minute eco-trail hike to Santelmo. I haven't hiked for the longest time, and this activity is definitely one of my weaknesses, but the hike to Santelmo was all worth it and very doable even for non-athletic peeps like me. We had a nice workout with a view, and ended at the "secret beach" for lunch!

It's great activity to bond with new and old friends too! I can imagine this as team building activity as well, for corporate groups.

Santelmo is a sanctuary, a secluded beach that you can reach through hike or through a quick boat ride. By some miracle lol, when my own wedding comes, this will be on the top 5 of my venue list! Haha!

Boodle fight for lunch!

We also went on a leisurely Cove Tour where we were able to snorkel and see colorful fishes and even baby sharks!

I've been to Batangas beaches before, but these sites are all new and refreshing to me! I can't believe that you can experience all these in just 2 or so hours away from Manila. I highly recommend both the eco-trail to Santelmo and Cove Tour when you're in Pico Sands Hotel. Then make sure to have a massage at the Rain Spa at the end of the day! 😉

To end this post, I really enjoyed our Summer In The South escapades, and I hope you get to experience it too! It has the right mix of relaxation, food trip, adventure, and even history and culture appreciation! I am glad I was able to join the group and enjoy a vacation that's so close to home.

What are your own summer plans?
